BAR GRATING

MATERIAL: Plain or HD Galvanized,

Painted Steel, Aluminum
Stainless Steel - Mill Finish
CONSTRUCTION:
McNICHOLS Press-Locked Steel
Grating cross bars are pressed into the
bearing bars flush top under tremendous
pressure laterally displacing 1/16" of cross
bar material into the dovetail slot, assuring firm, rigid connections. Deep cross
bars are used for lateral support. The
main bars are not cut, punched or otherwise deformed below the neutral axis and
therefore can resist up to the yield stress
for the full cross-section of the bars.

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR TABLES HWC/HWD/HWE

Symbols and weights shown for gratings having cross bars spaced at
4" centers. For gratings having cross bars at 2" centers add suffix -2 to
item number. Increase tabulated weight to 1.1# for the 1/4" HW bearing
bar sizes and 2# for the 3/8" HW bearing bar sizes.
Supplementary cross bars can be installed in pairs on the underside
of gratings with depths of 3" or more, when specified. These additional
bars provide extra load distribution and lateral stability to the carrying
members. For short spans, one set located at mid-point. For greater
spans, two or three pairs depending upon spacing of supports.
Where gratings are subjected to extremely heavy loading conditions,
or rolling loads at 90 degrees to bearing bars, further assurance of
satisfactory performance can be obtained by trim banding the ends of
panels. Such band bars are usually 1/4" thick and 1/2" less than the
depth of the grating and welded flush with the top of the grating.
Banding must be specified.

Delivery that meets your needs.

Not recommended for wheel traffic.

Note: The carrying capacity of a piece of grating subjected to a concentrated load over only a portion of its width is
determined by the stiffness of both the bearing bars & the cross bars, and therefore varies with the type of grating
used. To determine carrying capacity of gratings subject to such loadings, please call us for information.

Tight clinch style furnished unless otherwise

specified. Used in the installation of THICK
LININGS. All bars of this type are of the same
depth. This type is recommended when the
Gridsteel is to be spaced from the steel
shell to allow room for thick insulation between
the steel shell and the armored surface. The
slots in the Gridsteel bars permit passage
of the castable which forms a key between
adjacent cells. Gridsteel is available with
lance if required. Standard is without lance.

Maximum bond between the Gridsteel cells

and cement is insured by the long wide slots
in ALL faces of each Hexagon. Gridsteel
takes abrasion, vibration and shock loads in
stride. As the grid spreads the load, the
hexagon steel edge enhances the wearing
qualities of the surface. This edge peens over
as the surface wears, thus increasing the area
of the surface steel while the flatness of the
whole area is maintained.

WHAT IS GRIP TIGHT? Aluminum oxide grit is bonded to a metal

base using a metal bonding agent. This metal and abrasive grit
composite provides a non-sparking, non-corrosive surface that
means surer footing under slippery conditions.
GRIP TIGHT offers superior coefficient of friction for slip resistance
under wet or dry conditions, low maintenance, and a steel on steel,
aluminum on aluminum, aluminum on steel, or aluminum on galvanized steel base. A galvanized finish can be applied over the entire
surface when a steel bonding agent is specified.
The grit surface comes in 4 grades of slip-resistant coating.
McNICHOLS products offer the most aggressive.
All grades/profiles of the grit surface exceed the minimum .60
C.O.F. required by many municipalities.
GRIP TIGHT Floor Plate finishes are those of the natural color of
the bonding material itself. However, the steel base material may
be supplied either painted or galvanized. SPECIAL ORDER
GRIP TIGHT Ladder Rungs are available solid with grit surface
or as covers (see photos). Rungs are steel on steel.
GRIP TIGHT Type C-3E Nosing is suitable for poured or precast
construction and is available in 20' lengths. Provided with 2" wide
Integral Aluminum Anchor.

Grating Adds Strength and

Safety to Walking-Working
Surfaces!

Plank Grating is a one-piece construction product

that allows easy field handling and cutting. The
construction is formed and punched sheet metal or
aluminum extrusion. The formed metal planks are
available in galvanized, stainless, and plain steel or
aluminum. These versatile planks come in a variety
of heights and widths for almost every application.

Plank styles include a variety of channel configurations, some with interlocking choices, and walkway
styles with integral toe plates. Plank choices include
gratings with surface openings that are diamond,
rectangular, slotted, or round shaped. Most plank
gratings are lightweight and offer significantly higher
slip resistance surfaces than bar grating.

Recommendations are based on approx. min. loads of 300 lb. concentrated; 100 lb.uniform. Specific performance criteria may vary by
municipality/building code body and should be locally checked prior
to finalizing specifications.

Grip Strut Stair treadsLoad table

Load data below takes eccentric loads into consideration. Although load
values include allowances for normal impact conditions and usual
pedestrian traffic, be sure to make provisions in the structural design for
special uses and loads involving unusual impact forces or vibratory
forces. Load-carrying capacity of stair treads increases as side channel
height and gauge of material increases.

GRIP STRUT plank grating was used as a

protective platform over equipment.

Fabrication Services Available.

the allowable strut loads, samples of each plank material and

thickness were tested for each
plank width. (see Fig. 3). The
data resulting from these tests
was used to prepare strut loading tables for regular GRIP
STRUT which give allowable
loads and deflections considering strut flexure only. These
allowable strut and rung loads
have been incorporated in the
Product Selection Design
Tables.
The second aspect of the grating strength is channel flexure.
This occurs when the channels
at mid-span of the grating
deflect relative to support
points. To verify the performance of the side channels,
samples were loaded with concentrated and uniform loads at
different spans. To approximate
the most severe condition, there
were no attachments between
the channels and the supports.
In cases where spans are
shorter, channels deeper and
grating wider, strut flexure
becomes more critical.
With the exception of 8- and 10Diamond regular GRIP
STRUT, it can be assumed
that both side channels effectively support the concentrated
load, and the grating surface
deflection is negligible. Based
upon these assumptions, the
following values found in the
load table have been determined:
If grating surface deflection
should be considered when
selecting a product to meet a
particular specification, then the
deflection of the mid-width of
the grating, relative to the side
channels, can be calculated
using both the data in the Strut
Loading Tables and the
Load/Deflection Conversion formula. All load tables show
maximum loads, based upon
actual load tests.

The following information

refers to Regular GRIP
STRUT Safety Grating hereinafter referred to as grating.
HOW TO READ LOAD TABLES
To select size of grating, determine load, clear span and
deflection requirements. Having this information, select from
the appropriate load tables to
find the appropriate plank to
meet job requirements.
FOR EXAMPLE: If you require
a clear span of 4'0", concentrated load of 300# at .025" maximum deflection and have chosen regular GRIP STRUT, you
would verify the following:
8-Diamond GRIP STRUT
18-3/4" wide, 2-1/2" height, 12
gauge steel will carry a load of
416# at a 0.18" deflection. This
is one size to do the job. Other
sizes will carry more load if necessary. For more economical
selection, choose the greatest
width that will support the load
consistent with the job requirements and choose deeper
channels rather than heavier
steel gauges.
Grating will generally carry similar concentrated loads, tabulated in pounds at mid-span, for a
given span, material gauge and
height, regardless of width.
The uniform load tables are tabulated in lb./sq. ft., which
accounts for the difference in
load capacity shown for various
widths. Deflection is in inches.
To ensure the safety of the tabulated loads, two aspects of
grating strength must be considered. The first consideration
is transverse bending in the
grating surface, which is
referred to as strut flexure.
This occurs when the grating is
loaded with either a uniform
load or a mid-width concentrated load, and the struts (grating surface) deflect relative to
the side channels. To determine

Heavy Duty GRIP STRUT Safety

Grating Products offer the advantages of
Regular GRIP STRUT Safety Grating
but are designed for applications of
greater than ordinary load and/or longer
span. Basic design is the same, but diamond openings are larger and metal is
thicker. Heavy Duty Grating Products
are available in many of the same configurations, materials and finishes as
Regular GRIP STRUT Safety Grating.
Heavy Duty GRIP STRUT Grating
Products include: planks, walkways and
stair treads.

FIBERGLASS GRATING

McNICHOLS

Quality Molded Fiberglass

Molded Fiberglass Grating is the product of choice where

corrosion resistance or fire retardancy is paramount and high
impact resistance is important. The
Resin
one-piece molded construction
panel is composed of fiberglass
rovings combined with a choice of
resin systems. The grating panel
has a comfortable concave slipresistant walking surface and is
easily cut in the field. Load bearing
Glass Rovings
bars in both directions allow for use
without continuous side support.
