Deflorin, Patricia, and Maike Scherrer-Rathje. "Challenges in the Transformation to Lean
Production from Different Manufacturing-Process Choices: A Path-Dependent
Perspective." International Journal of Production Research 50.14 (2012): 3956-73. Print.
This scholarly article is written for one of the Switzerland universities for educational
purposes. Students, who are pursuing engineering major, may find this article useful for studying
and understanding the lean philosophy.
The authors of the article review the differences between mass and craft production.
Therefore, different manufacturing choices dictate the specific lean transformation processes.
The automotive industry was chosen as a platform to demonstrate the challenges that mass and
craft producers may face.
The article is very well built and provides good specific examples of lean transformation.
Furthermore, it helps to understand the connection between manufacturing types of production
and choices that have to be made, in order to transform to lean environment.

Case of the Call Service Centre." International Journal of Operations & Production

This is a research paper targeting performance problems in customer service. The paper
addresses to call center managers who are looking for ways to improve the quality of service and
customers satisfaction.
In todays economy, customer service is a huge and important part of successful business.
However, many of those services, such as call centers, suffer from poor performance. Therefore,
customers satisfaction can be compromised. The article suggests a lean transformation
philosophy as a key to improvement.
In my opinion, this is an interesting article, as it discusses challenges of call centers not
a popular sector for lean transformation. I was able to understand that the lean philosophy
implementation can be used in a wide variety of fields. The challenges of call centers and lean
integration is definitely a good subject that can be included in my research paper.
Maalouf, Malek, and Britta Gammelgaard. "Managing Paradoxical Tensions during the
Implementation of Lean Capabilities for Improvement." International Journal of
Operations & Production Management 36.6 (2016): 687-709. Print.
This is a research-based paper the purpose of which is to deepen the understanding of
lean implementation difficulties. This paper could be helpful for a business manager who is
dealing with individual stimulus for conflicting lean transformation. However, this paper could
be used for studying purposes by the students of business schools.
The lean system requires major organizational and process change. Such a change
process may face a paradoxical tension. There are three organizational paradoxes in lean:
organizing, performing and belonging. The paradox of performing may occur while a manager is

trying to find time balance between daily activities and lean improvement projects. The paradox
of organizing refers to a conflict between two different aspects -lean control tools and standards
on one side and necessity of autonomy on the other. That gives the employees the ability to solve
unexpected problems and challenges. The paradox of belonging describes tensions of identity
and interpersonal relationships during a change process.
This study provides a good source of understanding the lean transformation processes. I
think it is very important for change managers to understand the complexity and nature of lean
paradoxes. Furthermore, I am sure that the lean transformation process is one of the most critical
part of lean philosophy as many companies failed this process and went out of business. This
article must be used in my research paper in order to be able to fully explain the lean concepts.
Chay, TickFei, et al. "Towards Lean Transformation: The Analysis of Lean
Implementation Frameworks." Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management 26.7
(2015): 1031-52. Print.
The professors from UK and Malaysia review and analyze some of the lean
manufacturing backgrounds. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the reasons of drawbacks
during the lean implementation. The content of the paper is addressed to the manufacturing
supervisors and managers. However, it can suit a good studying source for students.
It has been more than thirty years since lean production system was adopted to the rest of
the world. However, there have not been many successes in lean transformation. The authors of
the paper argue that main reason of failure is the mindset of shop floor employees. It is important
to start lean implementation process, not from a top-down approach but bottom-up. Moreover, it

is critical to ensure that the shop floor employees and their supervisors clearly understand the
principles and standards of lean manufacturing.
The most valuable key to a companys success is its employees. Therefore, the more
educated and organized workers will dramatically help a company to achieve high expectations
of todays economy and competition. I think human resources of every business are the most
valuable, and therefore, I certainly will use this article as a source for my research paper.
Melton, Trish. "The Benefits of Lean Manufacturing: What Lean Thinking has to Offer
the Process Industries." Chemical Engineering Research and Design 83.6 A (2005): 66273. Print.
After reading this article, we can identify that the genre of the paper is a research study.
The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the benefits of lean production and at the same time
identifies some of the challenges. The audience can be identified as any student, supervisor or
managers looking to implement lean production in a facility.
Lean production goes hand in hand with lean thinking. This research study illustrates the
benefits and challenges in using lean production. In addition to that, it covers the history and
benefits of lean and the challenges in changing a plant into a lean process.
I believe that the research paper is well structured, giving me a great amount of
information about my topic. It has many visual diagrams and it covers from the history to the
future of lean production.

This is a review article made by two professors from Birla Institute of Technology and
Science, Pilani, India. The authors review 209 research papers for the purpose of summarizing
different definition, scopes, objectives, tools, techniques, and methodologies. This article could
be useful for students who are studying lean manufacturing technologies.
The authors are attempting to describe basic lean principles and features by using
examples from automotive industries. Lean manufacturing should be widely adopted by various
businesses in order to keep up with the growing customer demands and competitors. Lean
manufacturing is an ultimate tool to approach those requirements because it can reduce waste
without additional supplies of resources.
I think this paper can be used as a source for introductory part of my research paper. The
article covers the history and the basics of lean philosophy which could be helpful for the readers
who are not familiar with lean.
