Pre-Algebra

Mrs. Oberle

I. Course Description:
This course will be utilizing the Prentice-Hall Pre-Algebra Text. The class has been restructured
to provide an in-depth focus on the essential algebraic concepts. In order to accomplish this there
will be less review of old information and more time spent on the Pre-Algebra Standards. To
achieve greater understanding the students will explain their thinking and solutions and have
opportunities to explore algebraic concepts in real-world applications. Much of the time in class
will be spent working in small groups rather than listening to lectures and working alone.
Successful mastery of these standards will prepare students for 8 th grade Algebra.
II. Student Responsibilities:
The student is expected to bring a positive attitude to class. He/she needs to bring a scientific
calculator, spiral notebook (for Math only), graph paper, and a pencil everyday. Students are
expected to be polite and considerate to all other people. Classroom rules follow the school rules
outlined in the SOS section of the notebook.
Citizenship grading is based on the following:
E Excellent. Demonstrates a commitment to making the class a better place. Turns in work on
time, volunteers answers, assists others, always punctual, and obeys all class rules.
G Good. Demonstrates a willingness to follow all rules, works well with others, no tardies, and
turns in work on time.
S Satisfactory: Demonstrates behavior that neither adds nor detracts from the class.
N Needs Improvement. Demonstrates a need to work on self-discipline. Difficulty following
rules/instructions. Some assignments not turned in or is having difficulty working with others.
U Unsatisfactory. Demonstrates behavior which is disruptive to classroom learning. Is not turning
in work, may have a tardy/truancy problem, and may be uncooperative or disrespectful.
Field Trip Policy:
Students will be permitted to attend field trips as long as they ask 24 hours ahead of time and
they have made arrangements for completing all missed work.
III. Grading Policy:
Homework is assigned everyday including Friday. Each assignment is worth 4 points. To earn full
credit all problems must be completed with the work shown. It will be done in their Math
Notebook. Assignments are checked off the class period after they are assigned. Students are
allowed one late assignment per unit. The late assignment is due before the test that unit. It is the
students responsibility to show the assignment to the teacher for credit. Tests and quizzes are
given approximately once per unit. Tests are worth between 50 and 100 points; quizzes are worth
between 10 and 25 points. Upon return all test/quizzes should be taped into the Math notebook
The notebook will be graded each unit.
Grades are based on the students total points earned verse the total points possible. The grade is a
semester grade.. Current grades are posted every Monday and the scale is as follows:
90-100%--A

80-89%--B

70-79%--C

60-69%--D

below 60%--F

To assist in communicating assignments and grades I will utilize the school website. Every
weekend I will post updated grades. Every Monday I will leave the assignments for the week on
the system. If you would like to check grades or assignments go to www.challengerms.org. If you
need to speak to me leave me a message with the school at 586-7001 or e-mail me at
joberle@sandi.net and I will be happy to get back to you.
Thank you,
Joan Oberle
