ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF COUNTRY
Sydney Fringe Festival would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that we meet on, and pay respect to the 29 clans
of the Eora Nation. We would also like to acknowledge that this land falls within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal

welcome
KERRI GLASSCOCK FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

2016 has been a challenging year for Independent artists. To be a practicing artist you need to
have staunch resilience, and it is this stoicism that has united our sector in the most exciting
new way this year. Artists are for the first time, in many years voicing their protest, making their
worth heard and banding together in support of each others work, to ensure that we all have a
vibrant and creative City to enjoy.
It is this energy that the Sydney Fringe Festival harnesses each September, and this year more
than ever we will be shouting loud and proud. It is time to celebrate the wonderful cultural
offerings your local artists produce year round, so this year we are putting the sparkle back
into our Citys nightlife. We are reawakening old haunts, reviving long forgotten venues and
activating new precincts. Its time to get your shimmer on and join us as we bring together the
best Independent artists the City has to offer, welcome visiting performers from across the
seas and add a deep coating of glitter to everything we love about Sydney.

GREG KHOURY NEPA CHAIR

Welcome to the 2016 Sydney Fringe. Under the stewardship of artist and theatre
practitioner Kerri Glasscock, the Fringe has developed from providing a consolidated
platform to spotlight and celebrate Sydneys rich but often under the radar creativity, to
also becoming an aspirational and guiding force for artists and their work. I have been
privileged and very gratified to see the Fringe grow in this way and for it to maintain and
cherish its core tenet of support for artists and their art. With the initiation of the Sydney
Fringe, 6 festivals on and the dynamism of Kerri Glasscock, its time to step aside as Chair
of NEPA and the Fringe. I wish to thank Board and all Fringe team members past and
present and my colleagues at Century Venues particularly Elia Eliades who saw the need
and worth of the Fringe and supported it with gusto and heart and to former Chair Mark
Cleary who first championed the idea of an alternative arts festival. Please enjoy this years
banquet of riches and I look forward to seeing many of you in theatres and pop-up Fringe
venues throughout our fair city.

CLOVER MOORE LORD MAYOR OF SYDNEY

On behalf of the City of Sydney, Im pleased to welcome you to the seventh annual Sydney
Fringe Festival. The Fringe has become a vital part of Sydneys cultural scene, contributing to
the variety and scope of local productions, and giving new and established artists
opportunities to realise their visions and find new audiences. Im sure this years Fringe will
continue to inspire and entertain with its fantastic program of dance, music, art and theatre.
This year the City will be celebrating the launch of the festival by turning our beautiful Town
Hall pink. We also look forward to partnering with the Fringe to once again transform
Erskineville Town Hall into a temporary theatre, providing valuable additional performance
space for local artists. While other levels of government continue to withdraw funding for the
arts, the City is proudly employing all of the tools at our disposal from planning and
regulation, to grants and sponsorship and making use of our City properties to foster a
genuinely creative city culture. We want our city to be recognised internationally for its cultural
life, just as it is already recognised for its natural beauty, and events like the Sydney Fringe
Festival make a wonderful contribution to that reputation.

RICHARD PEARSON INNER WEST COUNCIL

Inner West Council is a passionate supporter of our independent arts scene and proud to be
the Founding Supporter of the Sydney Fringe Festival. The inner west is home to one of NSWs
largest populations of arts and cultural workers. We know a successful Fringe helps us enhance
and nurture our local culture and creatives, and also attracts thousands of people who
patronise the local businesses and creative economies. Everyone benefits! This year in
particular, Council is excited to support two very special new program elements. The Off
Broadway Precinct, launching Sunday 11 September, is a ground breaking plan to revitalise
Parramatta Road in Annandale and Leichhardt as a live music and performance precinct. And
on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, Camperdown Park and surrounds will host an
all-ages opportunity to discover the art laden backstreets, fabulous food, art, recreation and
community lifestyle that is nestled between King Street and Parramatta Road.
I hope you have a wonderful festival!

fringeambassadors
This year we have asked some of the countrys leading artists, advocates and performers
to wave the flag of Fringe as our Ambassadors. Each one has been chosen not just for their
incredible skill as artists, but because they use their place and their passion to push the
boundaries and drive change.
A freakishly talented family of performers the Stone Family have graced the stages, screens
and airwaves of Sydney for decades and all three of them have provided unique and standalone voices to the scene, each carving their own way forward to critical acclaim.

ELANA STONE

Elana Stone is a pint-sized songstress with a voice that defies her

stature. She has toured with almost every notable musician in the
country. A founding member of the all girl group All Our Exes Live In
Texas, Elana was named Best Jazz Artist at the Musicoz Awards in
2004 and won a National Jazz Award at the 2005 Wangaratta Jazz
Festival.
Were thrilled that Elana will be curating our launch event for
OFF BROADWAY this Fringe. Check it out on Sunday the 11th!

JAKE STONE

Jake Stone is a music industry journalist, performer and songwriter. He

was the singer and songwriter for platinum winning band Bluejuice
who received a number of ARIA nominations and recorded the highest
ever plays on Australias alternative radio broadcaster Triple J for their
debut single Vitriol. He has hosted late night and breakfast programs
of new music and talkback on Triple J, and has been a regular guest on
the ABC news and current affairs show HACK.

YAEL STONE

Yael Stone has shot to fame in the USA Netflix show Orange Is The New
Black. Sydneysiders will remember her incredibly brave performances
on stage in Diary Of A Madman opposite Geoffery Rush for Company B
and Stoning Mary at Griffin Theatre. She is also co-founder of The
Cannery. Working from a studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the company
supports new writing and innovative, creative exploits.
Independent creation is the life blood of any rich arts and culture
community. Its where most of us get our start. Because there is space
for beginnings and risks. For euphoric discovery and astronomical,
glorious failure.
A vibrant independent scene gives everyone, from the newly minted
creative bunnies to experienced sea dogs a chance to explore, hone
and radiate. We need ways to express ourselves when we feel the urge.
Because a society without room for unapologetic expression has dust
in its veins.
PAGE 8

fringeambassadors
Our next two ambassadors have been at the forefront of advocating for diverse voices and
stories in our art. They have appeared on many of our national stages and on screen in film
and television. Camilla and Nicholas are strong advocates of independent art and use their
passion to inspire change and support for this vital part of our sector.

CAMILLA AH KIN

Legendary Australian actress Camilla Ah Kin has performed in film, television and theatre
for the past twenty years. Including Holding The Man, Jump For Jordan, Small Poppies, Ali
& the Ball, Rake, Stupid Stupid Man and most recently joined the cast of Here Come the
Habibs. A fierce advocate for artists and the Industrial Organiser for MEAA, Camilla fights
the good fight with inspirational grace and understated talent of the kind not often seen.
Its Sydney Fringe Festival time! The moment when Sydney is alive with stunning
possibility and accidental genius. Faces never seen before, one off performance venues
and new cultural precincts previously unimagined! Whether its Edinburgh, New York or
Sydney, city Fringe Festivals are the beating heart of new ways that culture responds.
Nothing in a Fringe Festival is Tried and True and Everything will be made from more
courage than cash. Every little artspace or cabaret event is a big risk. Even the
experienced performers you will see are Known Risk Takers. Some extraordinary artists
will start their careers in the Fringe and you dear audience will be the first to see them.
How will you know if youre watching genius uncover itself? Youll feel it. It will be the
performance or art work that you just cant shake after having experienced it. But you
have to be there. Thats the thing with Art. You have to turn up and take a risk.
The contemporary American theatre director Peter Sellars said once, if you really want
to know whats going on in a city read the graffiti. Maybe the Sydney Fringe Festival is
the cultural Graffitti of Sydney. This festival will challenge, subvert and titillate this city
nothing surer.
The Fringe Festival is as OPEN and as ACCESSIBLE as Arts can be, whether youre a
spectator of Art, a maker of Art, a performer of Art, a consumer of Art, a critic of Art, a
teacher of Art, a shower of Art, an author of Art, a dreamer of Art or a provoker all you
have to do is turn up.
I am a proud ambassador of the Sydney Fringe Festival for 2016.
I am proud to be a part of the Arts community of Australia.
And #Istandwiththearts

NICHOLAS BROWN

Currently a host of SBS Radios PopDesi, Brown splits his time between LA, India and
Australia working as an actor, singer, writer and composer. In 2004, Brown was a recipient
of The Mike Walsh Fellowship and travelled to India, Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris
and Rome studying multiculturalism in theatre, film and television. As part of the
fellowship, while in London Brown had an internship with the British Indian Theatre
Company Tamasha Theatre where he began honing his writing skills. Brown is passionate
about addressing inequality, specifically the role of multicultural representation in the media.
Im proud to be an ambassador for the Sydney Fringe Festival and cannot stress
enough the importance of Independent Arts. I often wonder if we as Australians really
do have a culture. I for one dont identify at all with the mainstream. Im so often in
situations where Im thinking these are not my people! Fortunately whenever Im in or
watching or engaging with denizens of indie arts, I know that Im around my people. I
hope that in this season you find your people and your stories. Looking for culture?
Youll find it on at the Fringe.
The amazing and beautiful thing about independent theatre is that you can see, feel and
smell the blood, sweat and tears that have been shed to get stories on to the stage. That
passion is rarely seen anywhere else. I remember getting scars from indy plays in the
past, small wounds from stage fighting or set changes, physical rehearsals, or from a
wild unbridled moment in time with another actor. I wear those scars proudly now like
ritualistic tattoos. They are part of me and are symbolic of the life that I lead as a young
artist and will hopefully continue to lead: one filled with passion, risk and storytelling.

ALTERNATE
REALITY GAME

Our mascot for 2016, Bravo Child is moving into the Precinct for
September and creating a program of activations, art-based
experiences and performances at various locations in the new precinct.
As a game designer, Bravos performance style incorporates a
real-time element; drawing on audience participation with real world
consequences. Bravo frames the month-long narrative as an Alternate
Reality Game. The audiences piece the narrative together by collecting
pieces of the puzzle before, during and after the event. In this way the
art bleeds into the world beyond the confines of a traditional theatre
setting and becomes a social experiment. The aim being to apply
creativity and brave innovation to our everyday lives. Bravos signature
whimsy and intellectual frenzy promise to whip visitors into an inspired
state of wonder and play.
Joined by a host of both local and international guests from the arts
for social change group UpUpTrampoline, audiences can expect to
witness an array of creative offerings; from physical theatre, sensory
art and transmedia storytelling to endurance art, experiential dining
and art-walk tours.

We love, love, love the team down at Redfern

Community Centre and are partnering again this
year to present a free family focused evening
celebrating Indigenous sounds and community.
All-ages friendly! So head on down for a great
evening of connecting with neighbours and
celebrating life.

Come join us at one of the Citys best kept secrets.

PHP is an awesome space; great drinks, terrific
food and a huge outdoor space that we are taking
over for our silent disco. With DJs playing live and
alternative listening choices via your headset, you
can dance like no one is watching while listening to
your own choice of tunes.

We couldnt host a series of discos without hosting

an old school retro disco! So let us take you back to
a time when the hair was big, the pants were tight
and the tunes sparkling. Its disco all the way tonight
so pop on some flares and come boogie the night
away.

No disco is sparklier than a drag disco. This is your

chance to frock up to the max, add glitter to your
lippy and dance like only the divas know how. In
celebration of our official opening FRINGE IGNITE,
this one will go late into the night.

CRICKET DAY PICNIC

Lets take a step back to a time when life was slower, the city quieter
and time with family and neighbours was the highlight of the
weekend. Get your glad rags on, bring a rug and plop yourself down
under a fig tree. We are celebrating all things park life. Our friends
at the University of Sydney Cricket Club are coming to play a
demonstration game with their grade 1s and are even hosting
a lunchtime cricket workshop for the kids. Plus games and activities,
food trucks and lots of old-school fun.

ADVOCACY

AWARDS

Each year the Sydney Fringe Festival drives a number of key

projects alongside local government and major stakeholders to
build a more viable, vibrant and sustainable sector. 2016 has seen
the continuation of our work tackling the growing venue crisis in
Sydney. Exploring ways to make it easier for creatives to open
spaces, for existing venues to operate sustainably and to ensure
our sector thrives and contributes to Sydneys reputation as a
global city.

We have been working hard in 2016 to secure avenues for our

artists to tour their work, ensuring productions have a life beyond
our festival. Our partnership continues with NZ Fringe in the
presentation of the SYNZ Award. We will be hosting the 2016
winner from New Zealand in our program, CASTLES, and sending
one of our shows to their 2017 festival.

Our 2015 Temporary Theatre Pilot project work continues with

the launch of the OFF BROADWAY PRECINCT this year. The Inner
West Council have safeguarded a part of the City for
independent artists and we have been working closely with them
to reactivate Parramatta Rd as a new cultural arts precinct.
Housing permanent creative tenants, pop-up activations and
additional programming into existing spaces to bring new life
into the long forgotten strip, the Off Broadway Precinct will be
launched during this years festival.

New this year is a partnership with CRITICAL STAGES who will

be presenting the Critical Stages Regional Touring Award which
will take one of our Festival shows on a regional NSW tour. We
are also introducing the MELBOURNE FRINGE TOUR READY
AWARD which will see one of our productions head to next
years Melbourne Fringe and we too will host a winner from their
2016 festival. Get ready to see Sydney based work spread wide
and far.

We continue to find new ways for Sydneys producers to carve

out sustainable careers, producing a detailed year round
Producer Workshop Series to up-skill independent artists.
Each festival we tackle the tough questions within our sector
with a series of Industry forums and talks featuring leaders from
our community.
We continue to find ways for all artists and audiences to
participate in the festival. 2016 sees the Fringe partner with
Accessible Arts NSW to create a new way of notating physical
access to festival venues.
Emerging artists will again this year be given additional support
at our Emerging Artist Hub, where they can affordably present
work, with little financial risk. The venue also houses our technical
student internship program which provides on the job training to
the next generation of stage managers, venue managers and
technical operators.

PRETENDER
AJ is young and undecided as to what

creativity and sexuality, AJ embarks on
a new and exciting relationship with the
eclectic and sexually liberated Anne.
However, both women have a different

Were all about putting art in interesting
spaces so well be running a new Artists
in Residence program at the Urban
Newtown as part of Sydney Fringe 2016.
Well invite four Australian playwrights to
each spend one consecutive night at the
Urban Newtown from 1215 September.
Each night, the playwrights will add to the
play that has been written and left in the
room by the last playwright.
Over the four days they will write a short
play set in a hotel room that will be read
by actors to an invited audience at the end
of the week.
Things are bound to get interesting and we

witticisms and classic one-liners
combine to showcase the infectious
sounds of American music from the

In a classic bar room atmosphere we
bring the lights down low and sink into
the classic tunes (perhaps with a classic

TIM
RITCHIE
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
From light-tripping abstracts to brutal architectural angles, acute observations
to stunning panoramas, Tim Ritchies photographs of early morning Sydney have
become an unmissable feature of the daily social-media feeds for thousands of
locals. In his first solo exhibition, former Radio National Music Director, Ritchie
presents a collection of signed, one-off original prints displaying the breadth of
his styles along with a series of artist talks for the month of September. One of
the original Double Jay crew, Tim will also be In Conversation, sharing stories of
a now lost-Sydney: a pre-dawn world where memory rather than photos recall
characters spilling out of long-defunct inner-city 80s clubs after his DJ sets. Copresented by Groovescooter & Folonomo Gallery for Sydney Fringe.

PIRANHA BANANA
ROMANTICIDE BOYMACHINE
LLAMARAMA
Im pretty convinced that Im a prince.

Romance is not dead.....yet. A

breathlessly energetic force-of-nature
performance that sweeps up all in
her path. The hour-long show is
well-written, with a stellar combination
of pathos, silliness and observational
humour to keep it bounding along.

world (in his opinion) to convince
everyone what hes convinced. Then he
comes to Australia, where everything
could kill him. And so he grows
anxiously depressed.

Penny Greenhalgh presents Piranha

FUN BUNNY SHIRE MAN

Peter Gleeson, you know him hes that
guy, the scruffy white guy with the joke
about the thing. Na not that guy, the
other one, yeah thats him. Behold his 1
hour show Fun Bunny. Its got a bunch
jokes, not that one from before these
are new more gooder.

Peter Green grew up on the wrong

side of Georges River envious of the
beautiful but vacant people from THE
SHIRE. This show is his revenge. Cult
comedy news site BOBVULTURE comes
to the stage as a surreal musical without
songs, dancing or any music.

hugely talented and incredibly funny

RODNEY TODD AND

THE WENDIGO SPELLING BEE SHANE MATHESON STEVE LYNCH IN

U.S. OF EH?!?
Recently returned from Chicago, Sophie
Long brings her one woman show, The
Wendigo, for its Australian debut. With
grotesque & wickedly funny characters,
this surreal Horror Comedy weaves a
bizarre tale of the macabre. Get ready
to be shocked, thrilled & amazed by The
Wendigo. A Comedy with Teeth.

Every year, Michael Hing (triple j, Good

Game), Alex Lee (Dragon Friends,
Buzzfeed) and Pat Byrnes (King of
Spelling), invite comedians from around
the festival to spell words. That is
literally all this show is, but its always a
chaotic and very fun evening.

A live comedy show featuring Rodney

Todd and Shane Matheson as they
converse while cycling - on stage! The
show is based on the podcast of the
same name, where the pair ride around
a different suburb every episode, talking
about any kind of bizarre and mundane
exciting topics.

In 2015, Steve Lynch took the plunge

and moved to America. For the next
year Steve saw everything it had to
offer, and realised - America is one
messed up place. And Steve is one
messed up guy.

BACKWARDS PEOPLE
NERDSVILLE TRACK
UP THE

Up the Nerdsville Track is a psychedelic

road trip with a nerd as your guide,
complete with sound track and slide
show. It includes original songs and
verse about our island continent and
people with poor social skills.

This is a comedy show about sex and

brains. Maybe its also about you.
Victoria Zerbst assures you that at least
one third of the stories are made up.
And hey, if it gets too personal there will
also be jokes about robots, nootripics
and effective altruism.

From technology to relationships, were

supposed to be living in the future. So
why does it feel like the past? Prepare
to have your mind blown in this hilarious
mix of angry rant and razor sharp
comedic insight as James Clark gives
you something you cant get online.

Zygielboym is not Debbies mother.

Debbies mother would never put on
a Fringe show. With the charm of a six
year old pretending to be Zeus, Debbie
Zygielboym Zukerman invites you to
be seduced by an idiot. Has you leaving
the venue feeling giddy and delighted

BUILDING A MORE
ACCESSIBLE FESTIVAL
The Sydney Fringe Festival is committed to finding
opportunities to improve accessibility over the coming
years of the fringe festival.

Please check event pages on our website for venue

access symbols.
Our Festival guide is also available for digital download.

In 2015, four percent of our festival program had

content that focused on issues around disability or
involved artists and performers with disability.
Were all about building a more inclusive festival.

Visit sydneyfringe.com to read more about our efforts

toward a more accessible festival.

Without action,
sustainability has no
substance

Your ticket to ride: pedal your way around

town. Take a moment every time you plan to
drive could you walk, use a bicycle or catch
public transport instead? It all helps cut carbon
pollution. Visit SydneyCycleways.com for info
on bike paths in Sydney

Recycle, reuse, supercycle: make sure your

rubbish ends up in the right place. Visit
upcycle and charity shops and websites
it can be loads of fun.

Grow things and eat natural: Its fun and

rewarding to have your own garden, even
if its just a pot, window box or balcony.
Growing green and eating natural is simply
better for you.

Be greener and savvier: choose services

and products that meet basic environmental
standards.

Clothing exchange: a quick way to update

your wardrobe and have some fun with friends.

Carry a cup: say no to disposable coffee cups

and plastic take-away containers. Try and
remember to bring your own; or even better,
eat or drink in.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY OUR CREATIVE PARTNER YOKE MAGAZINE

which stands for consciousness and creativity for change. YOKE is
printed in Australia on carbon-natural 100% post-consumer waste
recycled paper and vegetable inks. www.yokemagazine.com

Switch off: one of the easiest ways to

reduce your carbon footprint is to turn off
any electrical items at the power point when
youre not using them. Youll save heaps
of money too!

Fairer trade: there are a growing number

of ethically-produced clothing and homewares
products, so look out for organic cottons,
bamboo fabrics, recycled synthetics, hemp and
other cool alternatives to traditional fabrics.

Shorter showers: seriously, you can save litres

of water and plenty of energy every time
you shower simply by cutting the time you
spend down to about 3-5 minutes.

Supporting local: artistic expression and

creativity are fundamental to vibrant and
healthy communities, local economies, and
our social wellbeing. So make sure you buy
local wherever possible, including supporting
local artists and shows.

Its not always easy making the right decisions every day, even though there is little debate that looking
after Mother Earth is the most critical thing we all need to take responsibility for without her, there is no
future. The good news is, there are a lot of little things we can do to make a big difference. Here are some
tips on ways we can start living more sustainably by simply reducing our carbon footprint when we travel,
shop, eat, and share.
