Instructional Intent:
Cross-cultural study of culture and gender roles using an interdisciplinary social scientific
perspective. Students will develop an understanding of the impact culture has on our
social experiences through immersion in Swedish culture. Students will attend classes at
Tullangskolan and will gain first hand insight into Swedish Deaf Culture by visiting the
National Upper Secondary School for the Deaf.

SYG 2430
Sociology of Marriage and Family
The Swedish study abroad program offers Santa Fe
College students the opportunity to use the
sociological perspective while engaging in a cross
cultural travel experience. Students will immerse
themselves in the Swedish culture while learning about
gender, parenting, sexuality, marriage, co-habitation,
and divorce and remarriage. By attending classes at
Tullangskolan, visiting the homes of Swedish families,
engaging in group discussions with Swedish students,
Swedish faculty, and Swedish professionals, and taking
field trips, program participants will gain first hand
insight into Swedish culture. This will promote an
acceptance and appreciation for diversity and
encourage global socio-cultural responsibility.
