Please write in complete sentences when appropriate.
Please be neat and concise.

1. Please draw and label (include all appropriate parts) the following items
we’ve discussed this year:

a) the ear’s hearing system

b) a transverse wave
c) a longitudinal wave
d) a parallel circuit
e) a series circuit
f) a hydrogen atom
g) deuterium
h) tritium
i) carbon
j) carbon-14 isotope
k) helium
l) a squirrel
m) a shrubbery
n) a molecule of water
o) an element from the alkaline group
p) an element from the halogen group
q) a noble gas
r) another squirrel (optional)

2. Please answer the following problems using your gained knowledge of

physical science. Make sure to include appropriate units!

First, please give the formulas for finding pressure, density, volume, velocity,
acceleration, force, Ohm’s Law, and wavelength. Please also list their units.
A falling raindrop accelerates from 10 m/s to 30 m/s in 2 seconds. What is the raindrop’s
acceleration?

An ice skating squirrel glides around a rink at a constant speed of 2 m/s. Is the ice
skating squirrel accelerating? Explain your answer.

A speedboat pulls a 15kg water skiing squirrel. The force causes that squirrel skier to
accelerate at 2.0 m/s2. Calculate the force that causes this acceleration.

Using what you know about Newton’s second law, explain why a car with a large mass
might use more fuel than a car with a smaller mass. Assume both cars drive the same
distance.

A 7.3kg bowling ball accelerates at a rate of 3.7 m/s2. How much force acts on the
bowling ball?

Maxwell the squirrel has 5 kg of mass. Suppose he finishes gnawing a pecan and starts
running across a grassy field. It takes him 25 seconds to cross the field that is 100
meters across. What is Maxwell’s velocity, acceleration and force of travel?

What is the volume of a box that has mass of 24g, a length of 2cm, a width of 2cm and
a height of 2cm? What is the density of the box?

What is the voltage of a circuit with a resistance of 15.2 ohms and a current of .10
amps?

The brake light on a car is connected to a 12 volt battery. If the resulting current is .40
amps, what is the resistance of the brake light?

In a circuit, there is a 0.5 amp current in the bulb. The voltage across the bulb is 4.0
volts. What is the bulb’s resistance?

This room has an area of 100m2. If the force of air is 1000N, what is the pressure in the
room?

A waffle iron (WAFFLES!) has a 12 amp current. If the resistance of the coils is 10, what
must the voltage be?

A toaster is plugged into a 120 volt socket. If it has a current of 0.25 amps in its coils,
what is the resistance of the toaster?

The current through a resistor is 0.025 amps when it is connected to a 10.0 volt source.
What is the resistance?

Your alarm clock probably has a voltage of 120 volts and a resistance of 1,200 . What is
its current?
Last, please create your own word problems (with answers) for pressure, density,
volume, velocity, acceleration, force, Ohm’s Law, and wavelength (that’s 8 total).

3. Please balance the following 15 chemical equations by writing the

complete correct equation in the space provided.

4. Compare and contrast the process of scientific discovery today with

scientific discovery in the past. Give historical examples of how the process
has or hasn’t changed.

5. Imagine that you have filled your family’s kitchen sink with water to a
depth of about 10cm. You have decided to give a demonstration of how
waves interact to your pet squirrel (whose name is Maxwell). So, you dip
your finger into the water repeatedly to make waves. Describe how you
would demonstrate (a) reflection, (b) diffraction and (c) interference for
Maxwell. Please include diagrams in your response.
