AMBALA: Brokering peace between recovery agents and a local who had defaulted in the repayment of tractor loan proved fatal for the taxi union president, who succumbed to
injuries inflicted on him late Tuesday night. Ghanshyam died on way to PGI, Chandigarh, where he was being rushed to for treatment.
Ambala police have started investigations after registering a murder case on the complaint of the victim's brother at Mahesh Nagar police station. The face-off took place during the
late hours of Tuesday, when Ghanshyam was sitting at the taxi stand in Mahesh Nagar area and saw Sonu, the defaulter, being threatened by a group of men over the repayment of
loan. The victim's brother, and complainant in this case, Sikander told police, "On seeing Sonu being threatened with dire consequences, Ghanshyam came forward and tried to
resolve the issue.
While mediating between the two parties, he asked the tractor agency owner to not put pressure on Sonu and requested them to give him (loanee) some time.
At this, the staff of the agency along with the owner attacked Ghanshyam with sharp-edged weapons.'' The taxi union president was taken to civil hospital, from where he was
referred to PGI, Chandigarh, where doctors declared him brought dead.
"A case under sections 302 and 34 of IPC has been made out against Vinod Bansal, owner of the tractor agency, Prem Singh, the manager, and other unidentified persons.
We are conducting raids to round up the accused,'' said ASI Dharam Pal of Mahesh Nagar police station.

MANALI: Whether it snows or not, now the adventure enthusiasts would be able to enjoy skiing on the slopes of Solang Valley throughout the year. When skiing is the only purpose,
then it can be done on grass too as the French have been doing since 1966.
For the first time in country, Himachal Pradesh is going to own a grass skiing slope in Solang Valley, 13 km from Manali, which has been hosting national-level snow skiing
championships. The work to develop an international level grass skiing slope has begun in Solang Valley, which is likely to complete by the July this year. Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports director Randhir Singh Salhuria said a 250-feet long and 30 feet wide patch with foreign guidelines was being prepared for grass skiing
at Solang which would be completed this year. "The slope is being designed on the lines being made abroad and most probably it would be ready in summers of 2012," he added.
The youth affairs and sports ministry was spending Rs 1 crore for the project, of which modern machinery and equipment for carving skiing worth Rs 75 lakh and for grass skiing
worth Rs 25 lakh had been purchased.
The Manali-based mountaineering institute would provide the necessary skis for all those interested as this game was being introduced in the country for the very first time. The
department was thinking of hiring trained instructors from abroad, a source said.
"Grass skiing would add to adventure sports of the country a new feather. The institute itself would train the youths for this sport. Now tourists would be able to enjoy snow skiing in
winters and grass skiing in summers besides snowboarding, white water rafting, paragliding, rock climbing, mountaineering and other sports," Salhuria said. To further promote the
adventure tourism in Himachal, the government was going to built two artificial rock climbing walls soon, one in Solang Valley and another in Dharamshala.

SHIMLA: Fanfare of the semi-final of the India-Pakistan match has brought to fore this famous holiday resort which took the lead in forging friendship and better relations between
the two countries with the signing of the Simla Agreement in July 1972. The city is now looking forward to hosting visitors from the neighbouring country. The Indo-Pak Summit held
here in the first week of July 1972, which was attended by then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi and her Pakistani counterpart Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, with his daughter who also
headed the Pakistani government Benazir Bhutto in tow, incidentally was the first time that India and Pakistan agreed to explore the ways and means for a final settlement of the vexed
issue of Jammu and Kashmir and that too through the wisdom and statesmanship of their own leaders without outside help.
The bonhomie and friendly relations that developed between the leaders of the two nations and the entourage accompanying them spread through this queen of hills and its residents
have not spared any occasion to let the feelings and friendship for each grow further.
May it be chefs from Pakistan visiting the city to tickle the palates of the locals or the cream of the Lahore Gymkhana Club coming here to play a friendly gold tournament at the
historic Naldehra Golf course, nestled amid the stately deodars at height of over 7,000 feet.
The Anand family here, which had to leave Lahore during partition and took refuge in Shimla, has amongst others, been keen in fostering better relations between the two countries
and hosted various events. They are now keenly looking forward to visitors from their old home town visiting them and other places of interest. "We have undertaken a number of
events in the past few years that has developed an interest in Shimla and can therefore look forward to a number of visitors", said KC Anand.
He said that it was just about natural for the visitors from Lahore and its adjoining areas who had come to visit the match at Mohali to come to Shimla. "It has been the summer capital
of the erstwhile raj, of which even Pakistan was a part, then there were a number of families from the city who on partition migrated to Pakistan with some of them settling in Lahore,
then Shimla has often been likened to Murree, the hill station adjoining Lahore and the number of reciprocal visits that have taken place between the two cities, are worthy reasons",
he claimed.
Anand said that it was just not only the elders but even school children had reciprocated visits to ensure that the love and friendship they develop for each other matures with age and
time. "Just a couple of months ago, the hockey and football teams of the Bishop Cotton School, accompanied by headmaster R Robinson and his wife Dorothy, with all coordination

done by me, had visited the Aitchson College, Lahore and played goodwill matches there, to reciprocate an earlier visit by the Aitchson football and hockey teams to BCS a couple
of years back", he pointed out.
He said that in the continuation of the bondage between the two cities, the city would be hosting a Punjabi play at the historic Gaiety Theatre, with artists from Lahore performing this
summer, which would be followed by a fashion show with models showcasing the Pakistani attires. "Then of course we are planning a 'haat' of arts and crafts of Pakistan at the
historic Ridge maidan also this summer, besides a vintage car rally from Chandigarh to Lahore is also on the cards", he listed.
Also looking forward to a number of visitors from Pakistan after the match, Himachal incharge of the CII tourism cell, Ajit Butail said that being the summer capital of India, when
Pakistan was a part of the raj, definitely instills a desire to visit the place. "Though nothing official has been planned, the hospitality industry in general is keen to greet the visitors from
Pakistan and offer them generous discounts at the hotels and as there have been so many interactions of the residents of the two cities in the past, we all hope relationship continues
and strengthens", he added.
