Through this course students should be able to

To analyze the stress and strain on mechanical components, and understand, identify and
quantify failure modes for mechanical parts

To develop an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs


within realistic constraints.

To impart the knowledge about various machine elements, their functions and aplications

Unit I
Introduction : Machine Design, Basic procedure of machine design, Basic
requirements of machine elements, Design of machine elements, Traditional Design
Methods, Design synthesis, Use of standards in design, Selection of preferred sizes,
Aesthetic consideration in design, Ergonomic considerations in design, Concurrent
engineering, Tolerances and fits
Unit II
Design against static load : Modes of failure, Factor of safety, Stressstrain
relationship, Shear stress and shear strain, Stresses due to bending moment,
Stresses due to torsional moments, Theories of elastic failure, Design of simple
machine parts -Cotter joint, Design of simple machine parts -Knuckle joint, Design of
Levers
Unit III
Design against fluctuating load : Stress concentration, Stress concentration
factor, Reduction of stress concentration, Fluctuating stresses, Fatigue failure
endurance limit, Notch sensitivity, Endurance limit- approximate estimation, Reversed
stresses- design for finite and infinite life, Cumulative damage in fatigue, Soderberg
and Goodman lines, Modified Goodman diagrams, Gerber equation, Fatigue design
under combined stresses
Unit IV
Power screws and threaded Joints : Power screw, Forms of Screw Threads,
Terminology of threaded screw, Torque Requirement- lifting and lowering load, Self
locking screw - Condition and Efficiency, Efficiency of square threaded screws, Acme
or Trapezoidal Threads, Collar friction torque and overall efficiency, Design of screw
and nuts, Introduction to threaded joints and Basic types of screw fastening, Bolt of
uniform strength, Locking devices, Terminology of screw threads, Bolted joints and
dimensions of fasteners, Torque requirement for bolt tightening, Eccentrically loaded
bolted joints
Unit V
Welded and riveted joints : Introduction to welded joints, Introduction to riveted
joints, Types of welded joints, Strength of butt and parallel fillet welds, Strength of
transverse fillet welds, Types of riveted joints, Riveted materials and types of failures,
Strength equations and efficiency of riveted joints, Caulking and fullering
Unit VI
Shafts, Keys and couplings : Transmission shafts, Shaft design on strength and
torsional rigidity basis, ASME code for shaft design, Flexible shafts and splines, Keys,
Types of keys And design of parallel key, design of kennedy key, Types of coupling
and design procedures of couplings
