Physical Bullying
Physicalbullyingisthemostobviousformofbullying.Itoccurswhenkidsusephysicalactionsto
gainpowerandcontrolovertheirtargets.
Physicalbulliestendtobebigger,strongerandmoreaggressivethantheirpeers.Examplesof
physicalbullyingincludekicking,hitting,punching,slapping,shovingandotherphysicalattacks.
Unliketheotherformsofbullying,physicalbullyingistheeasiesttoidentify.Asaresult,itismost
likelywhatpeoplethinkofwhentheythinkofbullying.Additionally,ithashistoricallyreceived
moreattentionfromschoolsthanothermoresubtleformsofbullying.

Verbal Bullying
Perpetratorsofverbalbullyingusewords,statements,andnamecallingtogainpowerandcontrol
overatarget.Typically,verbalbullieswilluserelentlessinsultstobelittle,demeanandhurtanother
person.Theychoosetheirtargetsbasedonthewaytheylook,actorbehave.Itsalsocommonfor
verbalbulliestotargetkidswithspecialneeds.
Verbalbullyingisoftenverydifficulttoidentifybecauseattacksalmostalwaysoccurwhenadults
arentaround.
Asaresult,itisoftenonepersonswordagainstanotherpersonsword.Additionally,manyadults
feelthatthingskidssaydontimpactsignificantly.Asaresult,theyusuallytellthevictimof
bullyingtoignoreit.Butresearchhasshownthatverbalbullyingandnamecallinghasserious
consequences.
Infact,itcanleavedeepemotionalscars.

Relational Aggression
Relationalaggressionisasneakyandinsidioustypeofbullyingthatoftengoesunnoticedbyparents
andteachers.Sometimesreferredtoasemotionalbullying,relationalaggressionisatypeofsocial
manipulationwheretweensandteenstrytohurttheirpeersorsabotagetheirsocialstanding.
Relationalbulliesoftenostracizeothersfromagroup,spreadrumors,manipulatesituationsand
breakconfidences.Thegoalbehindarelationallyaggressivebullyistoincreasetheirownsocial
standingbycontrollingorbullyinganotherperson.
Ingeneral,girlstendtouserelationalaggressionmorethanboys,especiallybetweenfifthandeighth
grade.Asaresult,girlswhoengageinrelationalaggressionareoftencalledmeangirlsorfrenemies.
Ateenortweenonthereceivingendofrelationalaggressionislikelytobeteased,insulted,ignored,
excludedandintimidated.Althoughrelationalaggressioniscommoninmiddleschool,itisnot
limitedtotweens.
Infact,somebullyingbossesandotherworkplacebulliesalsoengageinrelationalaggression.

Cyberbullying
WhenatweenorateenusestheInternet,acellphoneorothertechnologytoharass,threaten,
embarrassortargetanotherperson,thisiscalledcyberbullying.Ifanadultisinvolvedinthe
harassmentthisiscalledcyberharassmentorcyberstalking.Examplesofcyberbullyinginclude
postinghurtfulimages,makingonlinethreats,andsendinghurtfulemailsortexts.
Becauseteensandtweensarealways"pluggedin,"cyberbullyingisagrowingissueamongyoung
people.Itsalsobecomingmorewidespreadbecausebulliescanharasstheirtargetswithmuchless
riskofbeingcaught.
Cyberbulliesoftensaythingsthattheydonothavethecouragetosayfacetofacebecause
technologymakesthemfeelanonymous,insulatedanddetachedfromthesituation.Asaresult,
onlinebullyingisoftenmeanandcruel.Tothetargetsofcyberbullying,itfeelsinvasiveandnever
ending.Bulliescangettothemanytimeandanywhere,ofteninthesafetyoftheirownhome.
Consequently,theconsequencesofcyberbullyingaresignificant.

Sexual Bullying
Sexualbullyingconsistsofrepeated,harmfulandhumiliatingactionsthattargetapersonsexually.
Examplesincludesexualnamecalling,crudecomments,vulgargestures,uninvitedtouching,sexual
propositioningandpornographicmaterials.Forinstance,abullymightmakeacrudecommentabout
agirlsappearance,attractiveness,sexualdevelopmentorsexualactivity.Inextremecases,sexual
bullyingopensthedoortosexualassault.
Girlsareoftenthetargetsofsexualbullyingbothbyboysandbyothergirls.Boysmighttouchthem
inappropriately,makecrudecommentsabouttheirbodiesorpropositionthem.Girls,ontheother
hand,mightcallothergirlsnameslikeslutortramp,"makeinsultingcommentsabouttheir
appearanceorbodyandengageinslutshaming.
Sextingalsocanleadtosexualbullying.Forinstance,agirlmaysendaphotoofherselftoa
boyfriend.Whentheybreakup,hesharesthatphotowiththeentireschool.Asaresult,shethen
becomesthetargetofsexualbullyingbecausepeoplemakefunofherbody,callhercrudenamesand

makevulgarcommentsabouther.Someboysmayevenseethisasanopeninvitationtoproposition
herorassaulther.

Prejudicial Bullying
Prejudicialbullyingisbasedonprejudicestweensandteenshavetowardpeopleofdifferentraces,
religionsorsexualorientation.Thistypeofbullyingcanencompassalltheothertypesofbullyingas
wellincludingcyberbullying,verbalbullying,relationalbullying,physicalbullyingandsometimes
evensexualbullying.
Whenprejudicialbullyingoccurs,kidsaretargetingotherswhoaredifferentfromthemandsingling
themout.Oftentimes,thistypeofbullyingissevereandcanopenthedoortohatecrimes.Anytime
achildisbulliedforhisrace,religionorsexualorientation,itshouldbereported.
