The Bible seems clear on the saving role of good works in the
lives of the faithful.
1 Peter 2:12 (New King James Version)
12
having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as
evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of
visitation.
Revelation 2:2 (English Standard Version)
2
"'I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those
who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to
be false.
Matthew 5:16 (English Standard Version)
16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and
give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 16:27 (New King James Version)
27
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will
reward each according to his works.
Matthew 25:34-36 (English Standard Version)
34
Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit
the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave
me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was
naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'
Matthew 25:41-46 (English Standard Version)
41
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty
and you gave me no drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did
not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44Then they also will answer, saying,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did
not minister to you?' 45Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it
to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 46And these will go away into eternal
punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Romans 2:6-13 (English Standard Version)
6
He will render to each one according to his works: 7to those who by patience in well-doing
seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8but for those who are self-
seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9There
will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the
Greek, 10but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the
Greek. 11For God shows no partiality.
12
For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have
sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13For it is not the hearers of the law who are
righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
Luke 10:25-37 (English Standard Version)
25
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to
inherit eternal life?" 26He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27And
he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28And he said to
him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
29
But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Jesus replied,
"A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him
and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that
road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came
to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came
to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and bound up his
wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn
and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper,
saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.'
36
Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the
robbers?" 37He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do
likewise."
2 Corinthians 5:10 (English Standard Version)
10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is
due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Revelation 20:12-13 (New King James Version)
12
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And
another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to
their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were
in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each
one according to his works.
Revelation 22:14 (New King James Version)
14
Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life,
and may enter through the gates into the city.
Mark 16:16 (English Standard Version)
16
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be
condemned.
There are also verses that say we are saved by God's grace...
God gives us salvation, by giving his only son; no works
caused this generosity, but works are needed.
