Bob --I was on Admiral John McCain's staff standing duty when we received word that
the USS Liberty had been attacked by the Israelis. I recall you were stationed on that ship at one time. I
was thinking what a small world it is that two people from Hicksville high school were associated with
the incident. Although I recall you had already transferred from the ship to another duty station.
Considering the outcome of the action you were very fortunate not to be on the ship when it was

I was fortunate to be off Liberty because there is no way to determine if I would have survived or not.
The torpedo hit the starboard side and the worst impact was into the teletype spaces with the
coordination center getting a fatal blast as well. The 24 men in teletype all died except for the one
survivor who had exited the space to answer the IC phone just outside the space.

He suffered a broken leg and is shown above returning to the ship when she arrived back home from
their stay in Malta. My replacement when I left was Ronnie Campbell and he was sitting at the same
desk I used when the torpedo struck...Ronnie was killed instantly. Strangely, some in coordination
survived while others died.

Commander Dave Lewis, shown above recuperating aboard the USS America, was standing in the
center of the space with two others, one died. Dave had flash burns to his face and he couldn't open his
eyes for several days. It is kinda eerie that we two would be involved in a major controversy. Still pissed
that our government decided to take the low road instead of pursuing a true investigation. So many

Fifty years ago today, July 16, 1966, my parents moved

our family from Yorkville Manhattan to Hicksville. It seems like only yesterday and yet it's been fifty
years. Dad is gone and Mom still resides in that little Cape Cod house they purchased back in 1966.

My family moved from Flushing to Hicksville in 1964. It was January and I was in
3rd grade. My sister was in 1st grade and I hated having to go to Dutch Lane while she went to Lee
Avenue. All Lee Ave. 3rd graders went to Dutch Lane to ease the overcrowding back then. Our house
was a split level which seemed huge compared to our Queens apt. But in hindsight it was a small
house....but a very happy small house! Hicksville was a wonderful place to grow up!

We moved from Holliswood in 1968 and lived in the house on 5th Ave and 11th St. Next to the Water
District. Our yard was a shortcut and my mom would yell at the kids all the time. The chain link fence
had to be repaired by the Water District a million times. When my mom passed in 2000 we sold the

I was raised in Hicksville, Long Island, New York.......Where everyone would speak like they knew ya.
Had our candy shop, corner deli, butcher, bakery, pharmacy and the local music school where we would
go. At a lot of places, you would say" put it on our tab!". We played outside in every season, ate summer
lunches at my house. Had dinner as a family every night. We played stoopball, handball, street hockey,
kickball, Wiffle ball, hide and seek, tag and manhunt. On summer nights we waited for the ice cream
truck - good humor and Mr. Softie - or drove to Carvel and our parents socialized. Remember the whip
and half moon trucks! Everyone knew their neighbors and people looked out for one another. A place
where the concrete was perfect for skating, bike riding, dancing and created cherished games of
hopscotch, red rover, red light green light, mother may I, we road our bikes and went swimming in each
others pools. Water fights consisted of pots, pans, cups, balloons, buckets and an opened fire hydrant!
SHOES weren't a must, we got dirty, ate whatever, drank from hoses, and nobody asked about allergies.
Made & had tons of friends in the surrounding neighborhood. We weren't AFRAID of anything .The
STREET LIGHT was our Curfew. We WALKED to the store and work and didn't complain. Fought
with our hands and made up the next day. Block parties were the highlight of our summer! But most of
all, if you DISRESPECTED your elders, you would be PUT IN YOUR PLACE! I'm proud of
my background. Re-post if you're proud of and will never forget where you came from! I will never
forget!
P.S. Miss the days when we, the kids, always made something of nothing to do. We were amazing in our
youth. It seems that the youth of today aren't making the best of their talent. Don't see them in the street
playing stickball or behind a school with a pickup baseball game. They spend too much time playing

was an Esso gas station on the corner and the owners name was Bob.
Every Friday, I would go to the Deli on the far corner of the stores shown
above and buy cod fish cakes because you couldnt eat meat on Fridays.

And the West Village Green Pool. I was on the swim team for a year,
then the family moved to Edgewood Drive near the high school.

was stationed on the island of Cyprus and went to Naples in 1963 and 1964. Also went to Rota, Spain in

On the 4th of July 1813, the US brig Niagara was launched into bay waters on the edge of Lake Erie to
join the fledgling squadron of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The young United States was fighting

its material results and in its moral effect. It gave us complete command of all the upper lakes, prevented

I want to take this time to day to say what a

great time I had as a member of the Hicksville fire Dept. I was 14 yrs old when I joined the juniors and
when I turned 18, I joined the Regular Department6 yrs as an EMT and 9yrs -11 months as a Trucky
with Company 1. I went through all kinds of training .the average Joe has no idea for what we do, you
ask them and all they say is you sit around. I joke with the paid guys down here but for those who are
they are true to the job it is worth every minute. I have a few lives saved under my belt and it feels good.
Just remember fire or the accident or emergency don't know if you get paid for what you are doing. I do

The Mystery of the Stolen Car

A true story

The proud owner of a magnificent 1956 Chevrolet convertible, wrote to say he had restored the car to perfection,
over the last few years, then this happened. On a very warm summer afternoon he decided to take his prized car to
town. It needed gas, as the gauge was practically on empty, but he wanted ice cream, so he headed to his favorite
ice cream shop first.
He had trouble finding a parking space and had to park the car down a side street. He noticed a group of young
guys standing around smoking cigarettes and eyeing the car. He was a bit uneasy leaving it there, but people
often take interest in such an old and well-preserved car, so he went off to enjoy his ice cream.
The line at the Ice Cream Shop was long and it took him quite a while to return to his car. When he did, his worst
fears were realizedhis car was gone. Very upset, he called the police and reported the theft. About ten minutes
later, the police called him back to say they had found the car abandoned few miles out of town. They said that it
was unharmed...he was very relieved and thanked them for their fast recovery.

The policeman told him that just before he called, they had received a call from a young woman who
was an employee at a self-service gas station. She told them that three young men had driven in a
beautiful old convertible with the top down. One of them came to the window and prepaid for gas.
Then she noticed that all three of them started walking around and around the car. Then they all got
back in and drove off, without filling the tank. Thinking that this was very odd behavior, she decided to
report it.

Why would anybody steal a car, pay for gas that they never pumped, then abandon the car and walk
away? Because they couldn't find where to put the gas!

Those of us who worked in gas stations during our younger years knew the answer to this one. If YOU knew the
answer, you are old - VERY old!

In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. The company was
originally founded in 1888 by George Eastman. Within just a few years, their business model
disappeared and they went bankrupt. What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the
next 10 years - and most people don't see it coming. Did we think in 1998 that 3 years
later we would never take pictures on paper film again? Yet digital cameras were
invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law. So, as with all
exponential technologies, it was a "disappointment" for a long time, before it became way superior and
became mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health,
autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial
Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age.
