Teaching Plan Project

NURS 402 Career Pathway: Development


Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to use a prescribed and
systematic format to create a teaching plan which includes behavioral objectives, a content outline,
presentation methods, time allotments, resources, and evaluation methods for an educational
intervention for the identified nursing problem.
Approach to Assignment
This assignment was approached by the construction of an oral and written activity that could
assist increase awareness of appropriate central line care for the maintenance of a standard of
practice within the department. The persistent problem was identified, the possible causes were
analyzed, an assessment was performed, the implementation of the activity was planned, a staff
meeting was implemented and a few days later evaluation was performed to see if objectives
were met or for possible need of modification.
Reason for Inclusion
Is important to add this project as it shows the importance of reinforcement of education for
safety practices, to identify and incorporate new measures that can stimulate the advancement of
education, to gather the unit as one to increase teamwork, to clarify misunderstandings and to
ensure every employee is well informed of changes and new practices.
Teaching

Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and
technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions
I provided information by planning an in-service that could re-educate nursing staff on
current hospital's procedures on central line care. Group discussion, literature review,
hospital's policy, and procedures print out was provided for engagement of staff to
subject.

Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate health


promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the lifespan
I used the internet as a way to obtain information for upcoming education. The printout
information provided support for the reason why it is important to follow guidelines to
reduce risk and to prevent hospital-acquired infections, legal actions were also discussed.

Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities for use in a variety
of settings with diverse populations
The acquired learning was evaluated via the usage of post-test, questioning the each staff
member and the appropriate demonstration of caring for a central line.

Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance ones own
knowledge base
As I was planning and performing this activity, my leadership skills enhanced as all the
strategy used for this assignment was performed by myself.

Leadership

Assumes a leadership role within ones scope of practice as a designer, manager, and
coordinator of health care to meet the special needs of vulnerable populations in a
variety of practice settings
I briefly assumed the position of leadership by becoming creative and develop a special
strategy that could bring all staff member together to enhance education. I assessed staff
members learning styles, the current statistic of central line infection in the department, I
developed a way to increase participation of all staff by providing a meal, being
nonjudgmental during the group discussion, by allowing staff members to self-reflect
their current practice and to self-identify solutions for possible noncompliance with
standard of practice.

Professionalism

Differentiates between general, institutional, and specialty-specific standards of practice


to guide nursing care
During the group discussion, we went over the American Nurses Association standard of
practice, the current policy and procedures of the hospital, and the legal measure for
practicing under the standard of care in the state of Virginia.
