JacobusJohannesPieterOud,commonlycalledJ.J.P.Oud(9February18905April1963)was
aDutcharchitect.[1]HisfamebeganasafolloweroftheDeStijlmovement.

OudwasborninPurmerend,thesonofatobaccoandwinemerchant.Asayoungarchitect,hewas
influencedbyBerlage,andstudiedunderTheodorFischerinMunichforatime.Heworkedtogether
withW.M.DudokinLeiden,whichiswherehealsometTheovanDoesburgandbecameinvolved
withthemovementDeStijl.
Between1918and1933,OudbecameMunicipalHousingArchitectforRotterdam.Duringthisperiod
whenmanylaborerswerecomingtothecity,hemostlyworkedonsociallyprogressiveresidential
projects.ThisincludedprojectsintheareasofSpangen,KiefhoekandtheWitteDorp.[1]Oudwasone
ofanumberofDutcharchitectswhoattemptedtoreconcilestrict,rational,'scientific'costeffective
constructiontechniqueagainstthepsychologicalneedsandaestheticexpectationsoftheusers.His
ownanswerwastopractice'poeticfunctionalism'.
In1927,hewasoneofthefifteenarchitectswhocontributedtotheinfluentialmodernistWeissenhof
Estateexhibition.[1]InAmericaOudisperhapsbestknownforbeinglaudedandadoptedbythe
mainstreammodernistmovement,thensummarilykickedoutonstylisticgrounds.Asof1932,hewas
consideredoneofthefourgreatestmodernarchitects(alongwithLudwigMiesvanderRohe,Walter
GropiusandLeCorbusier),andwasprominentlyfeaturedinPhilipJohnson'sInternationalStyle
exhibition.JohnsonmaintainedacorrespondencewithOud,triedtohelphimgetwork,commissioned
ahouseforhismother(neverbuilt),andsenthimsocksandbicycletires.[2]In1945,aftertheendof
WorldWarIIallowedphotographsofOud's1941ShellHeadquartersbuildinginTheHaguetobe
publishedinAmerica,thearchitecturalpresssarcasticallycondemnedhisuseofornament
("embroidery")ascontrarytothespiritofmodernism.[1]
AfterWorldWarII,OuddesignedtheDutchNationalWarMonumentinAmsterdamandthe
monumentoftheMilitaryWarCemeteryGrebbeberg.Bythen,hehadmostlyletgoofanyStijl
influences.Hecontinuedtotakeahighlyindividualisticstanceagainstmainstreammodernism.He
