Career/Occupation # 1: Pediatrician
Job Description: Pediatricians are doctors that deal with the healthcare of children from
infancy to young adulthood. They oversee of all the childs emotional, physical, and
social well-being. Pediatricians are allowed to treat and diagnose patients whether it be
a serious infection or just a cough.
Earnings: As of 2016, the median salary for pediatricians is $175,000 in Canada
however, specializing in neurology or oncology can raise a pediatricians annual salary
to about $250,000 a year. There are many factors that affect the salary of a pediatrician
such as years of experience and level of education.

Working Conditions: Depending on where a pediatrician works affects their working


conditions. For example, if a pediatrician works in a private practice their office hours
are usually the same every week. However, if a pediatrician works in a hospital their
stress level and social life may be largely affected due to their abstract working
schedule that may include them working nights and weekends. The job may become
aggravating at times when dealing wit young children who do not want to sit still.
Overall, the atmosphere surrounding pediatricians is usually friendly and engaging
because they are constantly surrounded by children and their parents.
Required Education/Training: After receiving your high school diploma, a pediatrician
needs to complete four years of an undergraduate program at a university where he/she
must take pre-medical courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Next, he/she
must complete four years of medical school where clinical rotations in medicine take
place. After this has been completed, a student studying to become a pediatrician will
engage in three years of residency where pediatricians receive training in various
pediatric specialties. Only after completing all these steps will you be considered a
certified pediatrician and can begin working.
Essential Skills Required: There are many skills required to be a good pediatrician such
as active listening. As a pediatrician, you must be a good listener and genuinely listen to
what the parent or child is telling you. They could tell you with some important medical
history or current illnesses. A pediatrician must have intuition and good observational
skills to help them think quickly and be aware of any symptoms that may help them to
diagnose a patient. Finally, you must have good communication skills and a way with
children to ensure that both the parents and children are calm throughout the check-up.
Future Prospects: For physicians and surgeons overall, which includes pediatricians,
employment will grow 24 percent between 2010 and 2020, faster than the average for
many other occupations. Additionally, some future prospects would be finding
employment in family medicine. Hopefully, this will allow a pediatrician to move up the
employment ladder and earn more pay. A pediatrician may also decide to go back to
school to specialize in a certain pediatric medicine.

Career/Occupation # 2: Orthodontist
Job Description: Orthodontists are dental specialists that correct jaw and teeth
abnormalities that may be the issue to speech defects, difficultly chewing, and many
other mouth related issues. Their objective is to prevent and diagnose dental
misalignments for people of all ages. An orthodontist fixes these issues by doing any of
the following treatments: inserting dental braces, headgear and/or facemasks, and
retainers.
Earnings: The average salary for any orthodontist in Canada is about $106,578.
Salaries can vary from $38,776 to $347, 907 depending on many factors such as
experience, education, type of establishment, and number of patients treated.
Working Conditions: Most orthodontists work 30-40 hours a week with little to no chance
of working during the night since most orthodontist clinics are open during daytime
hours. They work in a moderate sized work space in well lighted areas to see the
patients teeth. Their working environment is always clean and hygienic to ensure that
they patient receives the best care possible.
Required Education/Training: An orthodontist will need either his/her high school

diploma or GED. Then, he/she will need to go to university to earn a bachelors degree
where they will take biology and chemistry courses along with many others. Next, they
will apply to dental school which takes four years. This is broken down into two sections:
class/lab work and supervised clinical practice. The completion of this will lead to them
receiving the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, however, he/she is still required to pass
the National Board Dental Examinations, which will allow them to practice dentistry.
Finally, he/she will have to enroll in a graduate program accredited by the Commission
on Dental Accreditation. This will take two years to complete and consist of residency
training. After this, they are orthodontists.
Essential Skills Required: In order to be a successful orthodontist, there are many skills
required such as good eyesight and good hand-eye co-ordination. This will ensure that
there are no accidents and great precision when working on patients. Critical thinking
and problem solving are also required because orthodontists will have to decide how to
fix the misalignments in their patients mouths and how to do so.
Future Prospects: This profession will grow by 18 percent from 2014 to 2024, resulting
in about 1,500 new job openings. This might be due to the increasing desire for this
specialized dental care. An orthodontist might be able to expand their profits by learning
how to safely perform teeth whitening services. As an orthodontist, one can decide to
open up their own practice and raise their own prices which will lead to a higher salary.

Career/Occupation # 3: A chartered accountant


Job Description: An accountant is a person who keeps tracks of financial records and
proves that their client has the qualifications to audit financial statements. They also
offer financial advice to their clients. They work in the field of finance which includes
taxation, and financial and general management.
Earnings: The average salary of a chartered accountant is $62,952 per year, although
most earn between $38,940 and $106,880 per year. This can change overtime as an
accountant will have endless opportunities to get promoted into higher positions of
authority that earn more money.
Working Conditions: Most chartered accountants work from the hours of 9am to 6pm
throughout the week. They do have to work evenings and weekends occasionally to
meet deadlines. They work in an office environment and spend much of their time on a
computer or in meetings.
Required Education/Training: First, a high school diploma is required. Second, make
sure to obtain a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related subject. Then, graduate
from a two-year chartered account program. Complete the Chartered Professional
Accountant PREP, which consists of 12 Modules covering the Entry-Level knowledge,
skills and competencies required. Finally, after he/she complete this, he/she is allowed
to enter the work field.
Essential Skills Required: A chartered accountant has to have self-motivation and
regulation due to the fact that most work will be independent and will have certain
deadlines. Other essential skills include organizational and time management skills. A
chartered account will be responsible for handling confidential documents which is why
they must be organized. Finally, they must have strong analyzing and problem solving
skills because they will be required to give advice based on the data given.

Future Prospects: The expectant growth for accountants and auditors is about 11% over
the 2014-2024 decade. A chartered accountant has endless opportunities to earn more
money by getting promoted at his/her company. The may also choose to open up their
own company.
