MEDT 6461, Summer 2016: Annual Report

Beverly Hughes

Contributions to student learning

One of the components of the annual report that I would most want to communicate to my
stakeholders is my contributions to student learning. Since the primary purpose of a school
library is to positively contribute to the academic achievement of student learning, I would find it
essential to report on how I was involved or how the materials led to these successes. In order to
show my contributions, I would use pre-/post-assessment data, presentation evaluations, minilesson or co-teaching lesson plans, surveys and observational data. This data would also be
beneficial to decide how best to provide contributions to student learning in the future including
the ordering of materials to support learning.
Collection use
Another component of the annual report that I would want to communicate to my stakeholders is
the information on how the library collection was used throughout the school year. I could collect
the circulation data using Follett reports, which could break down the total circulation into
Dewey divisions. By analyzing which Dewey divisions are getting the most or least circulation
and comparing that to the percentage of the collection represented in each division, I can make
weeding and purchasing decisions that provide a better use of funds for the collection.
Additionally, I could administer user-satisfaction or stakeholder-usage surveys to determine the
perception of the collection according to those surveyed. I could also use observational data or
anecdotal records to attest that the collection was used for the designed purposes.
Reading promotions
Based on a 2015 article by Gavigan and Lance about perceptions of school librarians,
stakeholders will likely state that a vital component of the school library is to promote
independent reading, I would include any reading promotions of which the library hosted or
participated. In order to show the reading promotions, I would show pictures, surveys, statistics,
and quotes about the bi-annual book fair, any reading milestone celebrations, Banned Books
Week, or the promotion of new arrivals. These items would show that I have made fiscallyresponsible decisions regarding the collection and that I was promoting the circulation of books
as well as student achievement.
Infographic Easel.ly
In order to present this information in an annual report, I would create an infographic through a
program like Easel.ly. I found this tool was easy to use and that it provided an eye-catching way
to communicate facts to the viewer. However, if I needed to present this information to multiple
people, I would use an interactive application like Prezi that allows video clips, as well as the
ability to skip forward or backward and to zoom in to important pieces of information. Again,
this is another user-friendly and viewer-friendly application that I could use to communicate my
annual report to my stakeholders.
