TEST I: Identification(write the answer in uppercase letters)2 pts each.

1. The material laid over the base coarse consisting of asphalt concrete or
Portland cement.
2. The earth beneath the road, properly arranged and graded, compacted
and stabilized.
3. The materials laid on top of the sub-grade consisting of crushed stone or
gravel or sometimes mixed with asphalt binder.
4. The term referring to granular base coarse or a road surface of untreated
soil mixture.
5. They provide space allowance for the lengthening of slab due to
expansion.
6. A substance added in mixing to change the characteristic of a concrete
mixture.
7. The tendency of water to seek its own level.
8. It refers to the occurrence where the moving mass is defined and
separated from the underlying and adjacent earth by plane.
9. It refers to the displacement of an intact mass of soil due to the action of
an adjacent zone of earth.
10. A slide associated with natural slopes and constructed embankment of
homogeneous materials possessing cohesion.
11. A device used to channel water.
12. A structure built to span a valley, river, road pr a typical obstacle such as a
canyon.
13. A pipe, canal, channel, or passage of conveying water or fluid.
14. A drain installed in porous fill, for drawing off surface water or water from
the soil, as under the slab or structure.
15. A structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil.
16. An enclosure within a water environment constructed to allow water to be
displaced by air for the purpose of creating a dry work environment.
17. A crawler equipped with a blade used to push large quantities of soil,
sand, rubble etc. during construction work.
18. An engineering vehicle used to lay asphalt on roadways.
19. A compactor type engineering vehicle used to compact soil, gravel,
concrete or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations.

Test II: Problem Solving

1. A flexible pavement carries a static wheel load of 50 KN. The circular
contact area of the tire is 84,412 mm2 and the transmitted load is
distributed across a wide area of the subgrade at an angle of 45. The
subgrade bearing value f1 is 0.16MPa and that of the base is 0.40MPa.
Design the thickness of the flexible pavement and base in mm.
Draw the cross section.
2. Referring to #1, design the same pavement using concrete instead. The
allowable tensile stress of concrete is 1.38MPa.Sufficient dowels are
provided across the joints. Draw the cross section.
