MARTINSVILLE
IU Health Morgan staff and
the community were invited
to AN open house of the new
emergency department at IU
Health Morgan on Monday
night.
The department was phase I
of the ongoing $13.5 million renovation at IU Health Morgan.
The project began in January
and was officially opened for
use immediately following the
open house.
The new department houses
13 exam rooms, a trauma room
and four observation rooms
where a patient can stay for up
to 23 hours if needed.
IU Health Morgan president
Larry Bailey opened up the evening with a welcome and also
talked about how much more
spacious and comfortable the
new area is.
He also said IU Health Morgan is committed to the community and will continue to
stay open 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.

department at IU Health Morgan. Photo by Kylee Crane.
When the whole project is
done in a few months, well be
even bigger, even better and
even nicer. Youll be in good
hands whenever you come to
our emergency department and
now we have the rooms and
facilities to take care of patients

of the same number of patients
and our nurses, doctors and
staff wont be falling over each
other because we now have the
appropriate number of rooms,
larger hallways and work areas for the staff, Bailey said.

in the best way possible. We are

very proud about it.
Dr. Rocky Singh, medical
director for the emergency department, spoke about the previous experiences they were
having in the old department,

business in Mooresville since 1988, it has
kept up with the industry changes that
have come with the digital age.
Ron and Jan Brown and their son Troy

264 E. High St. in Mooresville and have
kept up with the technology challenges.

two other children, Lesa and Rick, but they

Ron started in the newspaper industry
when the hot metal process in the prepress and press was used. He transitioned
with the industry through the age of offset
and then to the digital age of printing and
the technology of todays printing industry.

people on both sides of the aisle
and decided which proposals
would best accomplish that
goal while preserving the Second Amendment.
After thinking it through
and speaking with all parties

the Cornyn amendment is the
best way to keep guns out of
the hands of terrorists and
protect the constitutional due

Americans. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen.
Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., authored two of the four
amendments that were voted on Monday.
Donnelly showed his support for strengthening the
background check system to prevent criminals and individuals with serious mental illness from purchasing
guns. He also supported amendments meant to keep
individuals on terrorism watch lists from purchasing
weapons.
We should all be able to agree to keep guns out of
the hands of terrorists and criminals, and I hope the
Senate comes together to find a bipartisan solution that
would make our country safer, while protecting the
rights of law abiding citizens, Donnelly said Tuesday.
None of the measures were able to achieve the 60vote threshold needed to advance in the 100-member
Senate. The votes were scheduled as the result of a
successful 15-hour Senate Democratic filibuster last
week, led by Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut.
Heres a breakdown of the amendments and votes.

with guests coming in and saying
how they had no room to sit in
the areas. He said he is grateful
for the changes IU Health Morgan
has made.
When IU Health came in, they
gave us a promise of exceptional
care of the community . . . We
always want to provide great care,
the nurses and physicians have
always put in their heart to make
that happen, but now we have the
facility to really give that care,
Singh said.
The new area is double the size
of the previous emergency department, which will help reduce
the stress of both the patients and
nurses, according to registered
nurse Cindy Bowman. Bowman

said there was a lack of privacy

within the old department.
In the previous ER, we had
curtains to pull open and close
between patients and that was
it, Bowman said. So, from a patients standpoint, they get a lot of
privacy here whereas in the other
area you could hear everything
going on on the other side of the
curtain.
The staff also had a lack of
privacy and space as well. Bowman said it was so cluttered
with everyone bumping into each
other. It was also rather difficult
to make phone calls concerning
patients or other work matters at
the nurse station when two other
nurses might be trying to make a
call in the same location as well.
This is just overall going to
make things happen more efficiently, she said.

Bowman said the new location

near the chapel is extremely beneficial for cases where they may
need to take the families out of
the room and talk to them in private, something they did not have
the opportunity or ability to do in
the old emergency department.
The code, or resuscitation,
room, is also really nice because
its right there when the patients
come in and its away from everyone else, Bowman said. Back in
the old room you were just right
there where everyone could see
you, so again its another great
privacy thing.
Phase II will include construction of a new waiting and registration area. Phase II began Tuesday.
IU Health Morgan is located at
2209 John R. Wooden Drive, Martinsvile.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, amendment:

Failed, 53-47.
This proposal would allow a judge to block the
purchase of a gun if theres probable cause, proven
in court, that the would-be gun buyer is involved in
terrorist activity. The court proceeding must be completed within a 72-hour window.
Coats: Voted for the amendment.
Donnelly: Voted for the amendment.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., amendment:
Failed, 47-53.
Feinsteins proposal would allow the Department of
Justice to block gun sales to a suspected terrorist, as
long as there is reasonable suspicion that the person
is a threat to public safety. There is no provision for
judicial review.
Coats: Voted against the amendment.
Donnelly: Voted for the amendment.

Background checks

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, amendment:

Failed, 53-47
Grassleys version, reintroduced legislation from 2013,
looks to improve on the current firearms background
check system, known as the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System, or NICS. His improvements
would make sure the NICS contains the records needed to know who is prohibited under federal law from
acquiring or possessing a firearm.
Coats: Voted for the amendment.
Donnelly: Voted for the amendment.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., amendment:
Failed, 44-56.
On the heels of his successful filibuster forcing a
vote from the Senate, Murphy introduced legislation
that would extend background checks, requiring them
for all firearms sales by private sellers, including at
gun shows and over the internet. The amendment
also would create a legal requirement to report a lost
or stolen firearm.
Coats: Voted against the amendment.
Donnelly: Voted for the amendment.

live in Martinsville, were unable to find a pre-established business they could acquire.
Together, we have more than 100 years of knowledge in the industry, Jan said. We do a wide range
of printing from letterheads, envelopes, invoices,
brochures, catalogs and everything in between from
black to full color offset and digital, along with a
full-service bindery and a full-service design, layout
and typesetting service.
Printech serves not only Mooresville and Morgan
County customers but also those who live in the
surrounding areas. Jan said about 99 percent of their
business is with commercial entities. The company
is also active in the community with Little League
teams, the Mooresville and Martinsville chambers
and a Christmas charity event. Jan is also a member of
and has served as an officer for Networking Business
Women of Morgan County.
The Browns enjoy their work and are proud of the
quality of items they offer customers. Jan said their
favorite part is meeting interesting people and being
able to meet their customers needs. She said the town
has always been welcoming, and suppliers were more
than willing to work with them.
Customers can stop by Printech Printing to place
