Development of Online Library Management System

(Case Study: W/ro Siheen Polytechnic College Library)

A Library can be defined as an organized collection of information and resources

which is made accessible to a well-defined community, the public or member of the
institution, gevorment educational organization for borrowing or reference sake. The
collection of the resources and information are provided in the form of digital or
physical format in either a building/room or even both. Librarys resources and
collections include newspapere, books, prints, maps, CDs, ebooks, database etc.
Libraries range in size from a few shelves of books to several million items.

the College Library and Collections Services provide vital support for students,
researchers and staff, complementing academic activities. We arrange access to the
world of information whether online, multimedia or in print and the training and
support to exploit it to the full. Come and make the most of us!
Background of the Study
The study of the project is on an Online Library Management System(OLMS). An
Online Libraray Management System is an application of software which makes the
Library system to automate the manual operetion with computerized database
system. With this system the Librarian can be manage /keep the records of books,
members of the Library, and perform various transactions such like issue of books,
return of books, trace and search of books quicly, addition new books, addition of
new members, updating of existing books, updating of existing members etc.

In addition, report design is also included in Library Management System. If

Librarians position is admin, the Librarian is able to generate different kinds of
reports like lists of students registered, list of staff teacher registered, and list of
books, issue and return of books and members fine reports, if they dont return
on time.
All these operations are able to help librarian to manage the library with more
convenience and in a more efficient way as compared to library systems which
are not computerized.

Exsting system
In our existing library system, all the transactions of books are done manually, so it
is taking more time for a transaction like borrowing a book or returning a book and

also for searching of members and books. The second problem that is in clearing
students clearance form they are turning back round all the campus of the College.
This is taking more time with average of one day minimum and it is tedious work for
students to sign-off the clearance form from all Libraries for accountability in the
accomplishment of the form. Another major disadvantage is that to preparing the
list of books borrowed and the available books in the Library will take more time,
currently it is doing as a one day process for verifying all records. So after
conducting the feasibility study we decided to make the manual Library
management system to be computerized.
Proposed System
The proposed system is an automated Library Management system. Through our
software the Librarian can add members, add books, search members, search
books, update information, edit information, manage centrally transaction
information, borrow and return book in quick way. Our proposed system has the
following advantages:

Provide more capacity storage
Search information quickly
Look and feel good environment
Perform quick transaction
Manage any updated information centrally

All the manual difficulties in managing the Library have been solved by
implementing computerized database system.
