Aim: The aims of this course are:
To develop students accuracy and fluency in speaking
To develop students confidence in speaking
To expand students cultural awareness
To develop skills and strategies for communicating effectively
To learn how to use language creatively
Level: This course aims at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
Students:
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in
work, school, leisure, etc.
Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is
spoken.
Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and
explanations for opinions and plans.
Requirements: In order to attend this course, former Hellenic American Union students are expected to
have completed core course A2 Low Intermediate successfully. New students may be placed in this course
after sitting for the Hellenic American Union placement test.
Duration: The course lasts 10 weeks. Lessons last three hours and take place once a week. Each lesson
includes one twenty-minute break. Lessons begin at ten past the hour. For example, when a course is
offered 9:00-12:00 the lesson will begin at 9:10 and end at 12:00, with the break at 10:30-10:50.
Components:

The course content includes discussing about socializing, living away from home, transport, eating
out, emergencies, health, holiday accommodation and sightseeing..
Students will give a class presentation on the topic of their choice. The presentation lasts 5 to ten
minutes and is followed by a questions and answer session.

Assessment: At the end of the course, students will receive a final percentage grade, composed of the
following average grades: attendance 20%, class participation 30%, and two in-class presentations 25%
each. In order to successfully complete the course and be able to advance to the next oral-skills course in
the program, a student is expected to have a final grade of 70% or above.
Regulations:
Students are expected to involve themselves constructively in all class activities and discussions
and to adhere to the teachers instructions.
Students are expected to attend every lesson on time. Students course status may be affected if
they are absent for more than ten hours.
