Nathan Ractliffe hands over the red helmet to incoming Captain Phil Clayden. Photo Heather Vile

By Jessica Howard
Nathan Ractliffe has stepped down from
the helm of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade
after a diligent six-year stint.
The Bacchus Marsh man passed on the
captaincy role earlier this month, with a
traditional and symbolic handover of the red
helmet to incoming captain Phil Clayden.
Ractliffe served as an officer of the Brigade
in various Lieutenant positions over 16 years.
Its quite an unusual feeling, stepping
down, he said.
I feel like the pressure is off a little bit.
Still an integral part of the Brigade, Ractliffe
will continue his duties as a fire fighter and

was also successfully re-appointed as a

Deputy Group Officer of the Bacchus Marsh
Fire Brigades Group.
I will still be heavily involved in the
Brigade and I think I will be able to take a
bit of pressure off of the officers on the fire
ground by showing the troops and the
younger recruits the basics of firefighting,
he said.
I see myself having a positive influence
on the new members by assisting them in
training and their development.
Ractliffe said he was proud to have been
elected as captain for three consecutive terms
and also during the Brigades centenary year.
It was an honour to be elected to such a

good Brigade and to have such a major part

in celebrating 100 years. I was lucky enough
to lead the Brigade through its centenary
year and played quite a big role in how it was
celebrated and how the Brigade presented
itself to the community, he said.
I also generated close relationships with
local stake holders, such as the SES, Police,
Ambulance and Council. I helped to set up
the Hydrant Identification Program, where
we went to towns and highlighted the
poorly marked fire hydrants. We offered
our services by marking and cleaning them
in order to ensure they were really well
represented.
Ractliffe also led the development and
implementation of the Brigades official logo

and core team values.

I am proud of everything that Ive achieved
in my role as captain and Im proud that I can
step down knowing that the Brigade is in
such a great place, he said.
Those who have replaced me are people
that I have mentored and hopefully they can
now make the Brigade their own, whilst still
continuing the great strengths that it has.
I have been an officer of the Brigade since
I was 18. Ive been involved for 16 years, six
of which were spent in the captaincy role
and therefore Im tired. I want to step back
and enjoy my involvement with the CFA by
letting someone else have a go. Now, I can go
back to being a firey and getting my hands
dirty.

Woman located

Missing woman Nicole

Roudge has been found alive
and well.
The 24-year-old was reported missing to police after
she was last seen at an Old
Melbourne Road property in
Gordon on June 28.
The woman, known to frequent the Bacchus Marsh
area, was found on Friday
morning (July 22).

A man was trapped in a vehicle for an hour on Friday

(July 22) after a three vehicle collision on the Western
Freeway, at around 4.15am.

A spokesperson for Victoria

Police said the man, aged in
his 20s, was travelling east
on the Western Freeway near
Myrniong, when the vehicle
mounted the embankment
on the left and rolled several

Two vehicles also travelling
east collided with the first
vehicle.

Ambulance Victoria Senior

said the driver of the first
vehicle, a man aged in his
30s, was trapped in the car
for about an hour. He was
treated by paramedics during the rescue operation and
was flown by air ambulance
helicopter to The Alfred
Hospital.

The driver of the second

vehicle was transported by
road ambulance to Royal
Melbourne Hospital in a
stable condition. The driver
of the third vehicle was
uninjured.

Council Clips
By Kate Taylor
An extension of time on
an already ten-year-old
building permit has been
granted by Moorabool Shire
Council.

The application was for a

third extension of time for a
project to build a house over
four lots on Conroys Lane,
Wallace.
However, a report tabled
at the July council meeting
recommended
that
the

application
be
refused,
noting that the applicant had
previously stated in writing
that no further extensions
would be requested before
work commenced.

Without work commencing

on site, it is considered the
applicant is warehousing the
permit, the report read.

Council had originally

Scouts receive a
guiding light
By Jessica Howard
The 1st Ballan Scouts have
finally found a place to call
home.

By Kate Taylor

The local community group

have been searching for a
permanent site since it reformed in 2009 and, with the
support of Scouts Victoria,
have recently purchased the
old Ballan Guide Hall.
Group leader, Bruce Hallett
said the new home would
offer local scouts a place to
display their memorabilia
and achievements.

Weve never had a home

of our own and we would
like to be able to put up our
achievement badges and
scouting regalia, but that is
difficult to do when you are
renting. Having a site that
the kids can actually call
their own, and decorate as
they see fit, will really provide a homely feeling to the
group, he said.
Due to the increase in the
number of scouts, we will

still be running a lot of our

activities from the Uniting
Church Hall, only because
the property is a bit too
small for us, however this
is the first step on what I
am sure will be a wonderful
journey.
In the past three years, the
number of scouts has grown
from 35 children to 55, with a
further addition of ten leaders and four adult helpers.
Mr Hallett said the plan
was to expand the use of the
hall to provide a purpose

built facility for the whole

community.
We will still use our new
home for meetings that dont
require a lot of space, but unfortunately due to our numbers we cant physically run
activities in the hall. For the
time being we will engage
with the community and
also local and state governments in order to hopefully
get some backing so that we
can redevelop the hall to suit
us long term, he said.
We are hoping to engage

with not just the 1st Ballan

Scouts, but also other youth
within our community. We
hope to redevelop the hall
so that other groups can use
the facilities as well.

Anything
that
gives
youth another outlet can
only be good for the whole
community.
The 1st Ballan Scouts
meet on a weekly basis.

Farmers have a new online home.

The National Farmers Federation recently launched
Australian Farmers, an online platform that delivers upto-date food and agribusiness news, weather and market
information.
It is also aimed at amplifying the voices of Australian
farming with campaigns and policy development.
The platform, www.farmers.org.au, will offer localised
weather data to improve decision-making; enable farmers to
exchange ideas and advocate on issues.
It will also provide the latest news about food, fibre and
farming.
NFF CEO Tony Mahar said the platform is a major step
in bringing the farming community together in the 21st
century.
Australian Farmers will revolutionise the way we engage
with the community; delivering the latest news from
agricultural organisations and empowering farmers to share
their ideas and knowledge instantly, Mr Mahar said.
Our vision is to provide farmers with innovative digital
tools and technology to enhance the industrys productivity.
Mr Mahar emphasised the importance of arming the
industry with online advocacy tools in todays age.
The traditional model of farm advocacy has served us well
in shaping political outcomes, but it hasnt been as effective at
bringing the broader community along with us, Mr Mahar
said.

Town bikes resurrected

Club
harnesses
new lease

By Jessica Howard

By Kate Taylor

The Bacchus Marsh Harness Racing Club has secured a

new lease at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation
Reserve.
The club will retain exclusive use of the on-site harness
racing facilities, which it has called home for many years.
The initial lease is for seven years, with two additional
seven-year periods available, with an annual fee of $3,434.
East Ward Councillor Dave Edwards questioned the
disparity between the annual fee when compared with that
of the poultry club facilities, which has an annual fee of only
$530.
History is driving it; the main difference is its a more
common area for the harness racing than is to the poultry
club, in terms of slashing, maintenance and the access road
etc we are being guided by history, a council officer replied.
The motion to approve the lease was passed.

Chooks continue
to roost

By Kate Taylor

A new lease agreement will see two popular poultry clubs

retain exclusive rights to a pavilion at the Bacchus Marsh
Racecourse and Recreation Reserve.
The Bacchus Marsh & Melton Poultry Club, and the Footscray
& District Poultry Club, have called the site home for many
years and have also invested heavily in renovating and
maintaining their pavilion.
The lease is for seven years, with two additional seven-year
options, at a fee of $530 per year.
No submissions were received in response to a four-week
community consultation period regarding the lease.
The item was heard at the July council meeting, with West
Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan asking for the lease to include
a mechanism regarding council controlling any sub-leasing
of the site.
Its a Crown land lease, sub-letting cannot be done, if there
is a change of purpose other than what is permitted then
the lease is terminated, a council officer replied.
A motion to approve the lease was passed.

The Bacchus Marsh Hospital

Op Shop is wheelie excited
about its new toys.
A set of bikes restored by the
Bacchus Marsh Mens Shed have
been donated to the Gell Street
Opportunity shop in order to resell and raise funds for the local
hospital.
Mens Shed member Alec
McQuire said the bikes were
originally donated to the shed
by local police.
The bikes had just been
abandoned, so the police
donated them to us and we
restored them by fixing the
gears and making sure the
breaks worked, he said.
We received all sorts of
different sizes, from adult bikes
down to small childrens ones.
Over time we have received

a whole the

we
Draft 7
started we gave about six to the

Moorabool Centre and now we

will continue to give them to the
Hospital Op Shop as they need
them.

Op Shop volunteer, Cathy

Merry said everyone was
absolutely ecstatic to have
received the first set of bikes, all
of which had been sold.

It was really wonderful of

the men to go the extent that
they did to make sure the bikes
were right; they put the parts on
and paid for them themselves
and then donated them to us.
We are really pleased and very
appreciative, she said.

Alec said he would be bringing

in a few more and we are really
looking forward to that, the
bikes have certainly helped
some people that needed them.

Ballan business owner Patrick Bonello (pictured) really

Or radio. Or social media.

And he certainly didnt expect that his name would be

Maddingley couple Emma BONGIORNO and Joe

Jaxon Laurence arrived on Monday 18 July at 12.31am
and weighed 7lb 7oz.

But, after applying to do a

voiceover for an upcoming
Australian Super advertising campaign, thats exactly
what happened and its all
been a bit surreal.

I do a little bit of voiceover

work; and Australian Super

sent out an email to members asking who would like

to do the ad they only use

explained.
The next thing he knew,
Patrick received a phone call
asking for him to do a video

for a voiceover gig.

When it became clear that

The term developer usually isnt linked with

generous but it is true in the case of one local
estate.
When residents of Essence Estate wanted a
playground built at the Parkside Avenue Reserve,
they took the matter to Moorabool Shire Council in
the form of a petition.
Councillors pointed out that it wasnt a matter
for council, and that there are no mechanisms
to force a developer to put in a playground
post-construction.
Despite having no legal obligation, that didnt
stop Urban Land Development from putting its
business hand in its pocket and coming out with
$20,000.
The amount is over and above the developer
contribution that has already been made to council.
The money is set to fund a small playground, with
a swing set and combined unit contained within
edging with soft-fall material.
The area currently consists of mature trees, grassy
areas, paths and bench seats.

I think my name is Frank,

supposed to be an air conditioning repair person, a

Although he already is often on radio, including annually doing all of the ads

As you can imagine, in the

The ad is currently airing

And while, ironically, Patrick doesnt watch television,

I was really shocked this

Show to blossum

By Jessica Howard

Money will finally be made available for the 2016 Bacchus Marsh
Horticulture Show.
The project, run by the Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre Community
Consortium Incorporated, had been listed as a grant recipient under
Moorabool Shire Councils New Tourism Event Grants program.
However, as it was the only application received, councillors voted to
find out if the grants were advertised properly.
A report tabled at the July council meeting found that the community
was aware of the grants, and that five enquiries were made with just
one application resulting.
Councillors voted to approve the $3014 grant for the show.
It was the third round of the program, after money made available
under the first two rounds was not fully expended.
A substantial pool of $21,686 remains unallocated in the 2016/17 that
can be offered to new event organisers in a fourth round during the
2016/17 financial year.
The New Tourism Event Grant Program supports event organisers
that are either in the process of developing and trialling an event
concept, or have recently trialled an event concept.
It is specifically for tourism events with the potential to draw and
increase significant numbers of visitors to the shire.

listen, let alone believe what
theyre listening to!
When you consider that
three weeks of the campaigns from both sides of
politics put all of their collective energy into proving and
disproving something that
didnt exist, the real challenges facing this country
were largely ignored.
One can only assume that
the campaign had gone on
so long that they ran out of
policies to argue about; the
fact that one of the teams
actually won the debate is
frightening.
Lets put some Perspective into what became a
defining point in the contest. We had the Red team
claiming the policy that
doesnt exist does exist, and
the Blue team claiming the
policy that Red says does
exist, doesnt exist. The fact
that it never existed in the
first place to argue over its
existence makes you wonder
if we really exist.

NEWS

On the basis that the nonexistence of the policy only

exists in the argument of its
existence or non-existence
because the argument exists, why not pick a policy
that actually does exist and
argue over its existence, or
if you like non-existence, to
show the rest of us that we
really do exist.
The debate went from the
sublime to the ridiculous
when both Parties started to
argue about the Medicare
rebate freeze; we had the
Red arguing that an already
frozen policy should be unfrozen when it was the Red
who put it in the freezer in
the first place.
Whilst Red and Blue argued about who owned the
freezer, neither bothered to
mention that Medicare rebates had grown from 79%
to 85% and was continuing
to rise frozen or otherwise.
The fact is, whilst they were
both arguing about the same
thing, the Government had
increased health funding to

S
NEW

LOCAL

NEWS

the highest levels in history

with 6.5% increases to the
budget in successive years,
yet still couldnt balance the
books.
The argument about who
did what and when is like
trying to make fig jam out of
a basket of plums. The fact is
the future of the health system in this Country doesnt
belong in a fictitious debate;
it needs a reality check.
Finding a practical solution
is about being less political
and more practical about
the problem. The population is growing and people
are growing older, the cost
of health care is rising, and
we have less people paying
for it; you can politic that
to death and the equation
doesnt change.
There are only two choices:
invest more or spend less.
As the Shadow Minister said
herself last year, the opposition would be kidding
itself if it didnt recognise
that there were challenges in
the budget and that savings

needed to be found...there
is no area that is going to be
exempt.
Both Government and Opposition need to get their collective acts together on this
problem; this is not a time
for politicking, its a time for
consensus.
Health expenditure has
grown by 74% in the last
decade, and Primary care
and medical service costs
including Medicare have
grown by 60%, representing
an $11 billion increase, and
neither Party has provided
an adequate solution to long
term sustainability.
Its time both Parties
stopped misleading people
with scare campaigns that
defy the realities; you cant
cherry pick policy when the
roots of the tree are rotted by
ignorance and deceit.
Medicare is only the tip of
the iceberg and its going to
be a titanic struggle to keep
the ailing health system
above the water line.

Dear Editor,
The lens we choose to look
through determines our
perception of reality. Over
the last few days, I have
watched and listened to
some people quickly judging
and abandoning our Muslim
community.
People, who choose to view
the world through the frame
of one lens, have only a onedimensional view of reality.
One-dimensional
people
have little experience with
the Muslim community and
perpetuate racism based on
media commentary that only
represents one experience
and focuses on the extreme.
If we look through a onedimensional lens we risk
becoming the voices of

contempt, judgement, and

irrationality.
The challenge for me is to
view the world through
many lenses to acknowledge
the diversity within our
country.
When I look through
the lens of mainstream
Australians I see the desire
for peace and acceptance of
all people.
When I look through the
lens of mainstream Muslim
community, I see decent
people who value Australia
and its values and we
cannot label them with the
experience of terrorists and
pure evil.
We must embrace our
common humanity and as
a united community, shout
down the evil done around
the world from extremists.

BRIGHT FUTURES (L-R) Blake, Kaylee, Melanie and Zak are excelling in their sporting
codes. Photo Jessica Howard

Kids are such devils

By Jessica Howard

Four young devils have

blitzed the playing field in
the last month, with junior
footballer and netballers taking their skills to state level.
Darley Football Netball
Club representatives, Kaylee
Smith and Melanie Freeman
have successfully gained a
position in the 2016 Netball
Victoria Zone Academy Program; whilst Blake Colley
and Zak Butters have joined
the sides of AFL Goldfields
and the Western Jets.
Kaylee and Melanie will
compete with the U/17
Western Zone alongside 13
other successful athletes.
The two 15-year-olds will
train throughout regional
Victoria for four hours each
month in the lead up to the
Inter Academy Weekend, to
be held in October.
The weekend provides athletes with the opportunity
to play in front of Victorian
State selectors at the State
Netball and Hockey Centre.
Kaylee and Melanie will go
head to head against teams
located throughout six different zones.
Melanie, who plays in

both the junior and senior

division for Darley, said although she was nervous for
the Inter Academy Weekend,
she was looking forward to
playing against a wide range
of teams.
I am looking forward to it,
I love netball, it is my passion, she said.
Kaylee said she joined the
Devils in 2012 and was excited to have been chosen to
represent the Western Zone.
This will be my first time
competing [for the Western
Zone], you have to fall under
17-years-old but you arent
considered until you play
under-15 interleague. Its really exciting, she said.
Meanwhile, Blake Colley
has travelled north with the
under-17 AFL Goldfields
team.
The 15-year-old joined players from the Ballarat, Central
Highlands, Maryborough
Castlemaine District and
Riddell District leagues.
The team succeeded in a
130-point win against the
AFL
Townsville-Mackay
representative side after
losing by eight points at the
hands of AFL Cairns in June.
Blake said he was shocked

to have made the side, after

the team was chosen from a
total of 60 players.
I didnt really expect it as
I didnt think I would make
the cut from four different
leagues, he said.
It was a great experience,
the weather was really good
and it was awesome to have
played on both an AFL
ground and also where the
under-19 Cricket World Cup
was held.
Teammate, Zak Butters has
also visited and competed in
the sunshine state, after travelling to the Gold Coast to
represent the Western Jets.
Zak was one of 50 junior
players to be chosen from six
leagues.
After an intense training
program held at the Carlton
Football Club, he travelled
north to compete against
teams from South and Western Australia.
Playing at Metricon Stadium, the 15-year-old excelled,
kicking two goals and taking out Best on Ground
against South Australia.
Zak said he enjoyed making new friends and playing
with and against a number
of skilled players.

Election day winner

By Jessica Howard
A successful filmmaker
born and raised in Bacchus
Marsh has taken out the top
accolade at a 72-hour film
festival.
Sam Burzacott, a 21-yearold media student at RMIT
University, entered the Filmly Film Festival with four of
his friends. The competition
saw emerging filmmakers
from various universities go
head to head in a fast-paced
environment in order to produce an original short film.
Competitors received three
pieces of stimulus - a prop, a
line and a sequence of action
- and had 72 hours to write,
shoot and edit their piece.
Sam and his team put together a seven-minute film,
titled Isolation, which followed the story of a girl and
the federal election.
The weekend of the 72hour festival fell on the
same day as the election, so
we based our script on the

VALE

idea of people attempting to

make a movie for the festival, despite having to vote,
Sam said.
The idea simply came
from us being a little
stressed about whether we
could get the film finished
whilst working around the
election.
On July 7, the top 15 films
were screened at Federation
Square in Melbourne, and
Sam and his team received
the award for Best Film.
They also took out the honour of Best Post Production.
Im still feeling pretty excited about it, Sam said.
We didnt really know
what to expect, we thought
wed made a good film so
were pretty happy but we
didnt know what kind of
quality to expect from the
other competitors.
Once all the films were
screened, we knew that they
were all really good so we
werent sure whether we

were going to win but we

did.
Sam, who was one of two
team leaders in the group,
said it was difficult getting
organised, but the feeling
of completion was definitely
worth it.
We only had three crew
members, we were hoping
for more as we had more
organised but people slowly
dropped out gradually over
the first night. Once we had
the people, the shooting
wasnt that bad, but the editing was probably the hardest
bit, as we only had a day to
do it all.
It was such a good feeling
to finish and then winning
was just another level.
Sam attended Bacchus
Marsh Primary School before completing his VCE at St
Patricks College in Ballarat.
He now studies Media at
RMIT University and hopes
to get into the industry of
filmmaking.

Daniel Toohey

By Jessica Howard
Lifelong
Springbank
resident
Daniel Dan Toohey has been fondly
remembered by his family and friends.
The 92-year-old passed away peacefully
at Nazareth House, surrounded by his
loving family, on June 29.
A funeral service was held at St
Michaels Church in Springbank on
Wednesday July 6.

Mr Toohey was born on October 5

1923 into a family that has now spent
over 150 years in the Springbank
community, and on the land.
He attended St Michaels Primary
School as a boy, before moving on to
St Patricks College in Ballarat, where
he achieved academic excellence and
helped bring the under-18 football team
to a premiership win.

After the completion of high school,

he returned home to the farm, where
he grew potatoes, stacked the hay

shed, milked the cows and cared for

the horses all alongside his father and
brothers, uncles and cousins.
In 1953, he married his loving wife
Una and together they gave life to
five daughters; Catherine, Margaret,
Carmel, Joan and Bernadette and two
sons; Danny and Patrick.
In a tribute spoken by his son Patrick,
a current Moorabool Shire councillor,
and his grandson Daniel, Mr Toohey
was remembered for his strong
commitment to both his family and the
farm.
Pat recalled taking trips with his father
and siblings to the local Springbank
footy, and hearing tales of grand final
success, which Mr Toohey had shared
alongside his brothers and cousins.

Grandson Daniel reflected on his

Pas love of backyard cricket, the
Collingwood Football Club and talking
about politics.
He told stories of Mr Tooheys prized

chicken flock, his dry sense of humour

and jam sandwiches that were enjoyed
together after a long day.

He said his Pa was an exceptional

man who had made a profound

impact on his life.

He taught us the skills that make us

the people we are today he taught

us to be proud of our achievements,

yet humble. And to look out for our
family and be grateful for what we
have, he said.

He was not only our grandfather but

also a true man and a true friend.

I will be forever proud to be named

after a man like [him].

Mr Toohey was a loving and loved son,

brother, husband, father, grandfather

and great grandfather. He was buried

at the Gordon Cemetery on July 6.

CANCERJune 22-July 22
The go softly approach is best when dealing with work
mates or neighbours. A plantonic friendship may be
deepening. Domestic differences are widening, so a
family discussion may be in order on the weekend.

SCORPIOOctober 23-November 21

A loved one is in the limelight till Saturday, then its your

turn to be the centre of attention. In friendship, follow
your instincts. In business, look to hard facts.
SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22

Social distractions put you behind schedule and you may

have to cancel weekend plans to catch up on your
workload. Judgement is especially sharp and you do well
to follow your instincts.
CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20

Postponements get you down until a personal victory gets

you out of the doldrums. Misunderstandings are scattered
through the weekend. Look forward to good news about
a friend.
AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19

Your charisma is strong, leading to new relationships.

Letters or emails dont reach you when they should or go
astray. The week is favourable for bargain hunting and
antique sleuths.

LEOJuly 23-August 22

PISCESFebruary 20-March 20
Friends touch you with their loving gestures. Dont be
embarrased about reciprocating. Unexpected happenings
are scattered through the week. A relative may be stern
with you but has your interests at heart.

VIRGOAugust 23-September 22

BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK

Passion is your trademark, along with intensity, but watch
that jealous streak. Powers of concentration, which can
be quite remarkable, lead to bright financial prospects.
A romantic decision may need to be made shortly.

You are unusually practical about money matters and

show an unexpected gift for making small investments.
Watch a tendency to take a lighthearted approach when a
frank discussion is whats needed.
Your partner makes an effort to show his/her feelings and
its up to you to provide an atmosphere of encouragement.
Academic interests are about to change. A career roadblock is temporary.
LIBRASeptember 23-October 22
You can look and feel your best if you muster the courage
to speak your mind to loved ones or friends. Financial
gains and a trip out of town is accented after the weekend.

The clubs 2016 competition season is underway.

The Intermediates travelled to Frankston on
Sunday to perform on stage in their Longbeach
Competition. The team of nine girls aged 14
17, have been elevated to Division 3 following
a very successful 2015. As a result, a new item
has been added to their competition syllabus
Rhythmical Aesthetics, which has seen the girls
working on more complex dance steps, leaps and
elevation while maintaining grace and poise as
they master the new choreography. New Coach
Susy Carr said she was very pleased with a solid
start to the competition season but there is lots
of work to do yet though.
The girls were awarded the following results:
3rd Clubs; Honourable Mention Rods; Highly
Commended Rhythmical Aesthetics, Revue.

Last weekend the GB Forestry Cobras played East Point at home.

FOOTBALL:
In the football, the seniors had a magnificent victory and have now
secured a finals berth. In windy conditions, and unlike last time
we played, GB Forestry Cobras this time got the jump on East
Point kicking 4 goals to 1 in the first quarter even though we were
kicking against the wind. The second gave us the wind advantage
and though a little off target we kicked 6 goals 7 behinds to 4 goals
2 behinds and took a 33 point lead into the main break. Again in
the third quarter we peppered away at the goals kicking 2 goals
6 behinds to 3 goals 1 behind and had a 32 point lead going into
the last quarter. In the last quarter we managed to kick 6 goals 3
behinds to 2 goals 2 behinds and ran out comfortable winners by
57 points and continue to sit in 2nd spot on the ladder. Best players
on the day were D. Burton, J. Trowsdale, H. Coulton, A. Del Papa,
J. Bolton & D. Phyland.
In the reserves, the boys unfortunately went down by 22 points.
Though we were leading by 2 points at the first break, it was catchup football for the rest of the game. The boys currently sit 4th on
the ladder and should hold on and make finals with 3 games left.
Best on the day were T. Mullen, K. White, T. Hughes, D. Hall, M.
Suban, B. Miller
The U18s struggled in the windy conditions where they also played
catch-up football for the entire game; though they came home
strong in the last quarter they eventually fell short by 19 points.
The boys still sit 3rd on the ladder and have locked themselves in
for finals. Best on the day were J. Lalor, J. Duggan, J. Fitzpatrick,
B. Jackson, B. Griffiths, J. Dickson.
NETBALL:
In the Netball, again the girls came up against very tough opposition
and unfortunately had a very unsuccessful day.
The A graders lost by 15 goals, best on the day were C. Manumua,
K. Ingham & O. Mitchell.
The B graders were also unsuccessful on the day, eventually
losing by 20 goals, best on the day were L. Tyrrell, B. Pawlowicz
& B. Walsh.
The C graders had a close game but were unsuccessful, losing
by 7 goals, best on the day were G. Pino, V. Scicchitano & K.
Pawlowicz.
The D graders had a very exciting game and but for a couple of
wayward passes could have won the game, they were extremely
disappointed after after the game where they eventually lost by 2
goals; best on the day were A. Bamford, K. Buttigieg & S. Davies.
The 19 and Unders were also unfortunate on the day eventually
going down by 17 goals; best on the day were E. Bettio, E. Dodd
& B. Pawlowicz.
WOMANS FOOTBALL:
In the Womans Football the girls again to their credit displayed a
magnificent team effort where they run out victorious by 18 points
1-9ladder.
Bennett
Street,
Though
theBacchus
girls got Marsh
off
and have secured 3rd spot on the
to a slow start only kicking 1 goal to 2 goals
3
behinds,
the girls
Phone: 5367 3388
fought hard and held East Point scoreless for the rest of the game
whilst they kicked 3 goals 9 behinds in a great victory. Haley spoke
to the girls after the game about how proud she has been with their
development over the season and for the second year running will
be playing finals football. Best on the day were E. Crawford, L.
Stepnell, A. Bertram, C. Thorne, Z. Clarke, T. Curran.

Blues final
quarter dive
Ballan v Dunnstown
With their season on the line
the Seniors opened strongly
and at the first break had a
four goal lead, and could do
no wrong. But the Towners
got going in the second quarter and at the main break the
lead had been whittled away
to just one goal. Jason McNamara put in a great game but
he did not have support to
take advantage of this good
work. Wilkie and Tanti also
had their share of the ball
but in the final quarter the
Blues only managed to boot
three goals whilst the Towners came home with a wet
sail and booted five goals to
take the win. The Blues are
still in the eight but only on
percentage with Daylesford
right behind them.
Final Score. : Ballan 9. 6. 60
lost Dunnstown. 11. 7. 73
Best - J. McNamara, J. Wilkie,
D. Tanti, C. Povey , D. Galea,
L. Souter.

The Reserves, whilst undermanned, were on fire from

the start and managed to
keep their opponents goalless till the last quarter. The
Blues had all the answers up
forward and Rod Watts collected five goals, with plenty
of helpers. Trent Laurie controlled the ruck and Chris
Sharp ran his opponents ragged in the middle. In defence
Marcus Darley dealt with
any wayward forward ad-

vance by Dunnstown. Ryan

Bongart had a great day getting in the best in both the
Reserves and U18s. A great
win that puts the Blues 9th
on the ladder but it will be
an uphill battle to crack into
the final 8.
Final Score : Ballan. 10. 8.
68. def Dunnstown 1. 8.

Best - N. Thacker, T. Laurie,
C. Sharp, R. Watts, M. Darley, R. Bongart.
The Under 18s came out
with all guns blazing in a
fast moving match. Simo
was at his best and his pace
made life misery for his opponent. The young Blues
were blessed with accuracy
up forward and had seven
goal scorers across the day.
Lachlan Furlong gave great
drive from his wing and Lachlan Conlan was ruthless
in defence. The Blues now
have to prepare for the finals
with the last home and away
game against Hepburn to be
a real finals prelude.

Best - S. Dale, C. Brown, R.

The junior Under 15s took

control of the match in the
chilly and slippery conditions. Up forward Jack
McGregor collected five
goals but Hodge and Corey

Pascoe were the instigators

of all the action out of the
middle. The Towners did
manage to score a goal in
the first quarter but from
then on it was one way traffic. Coach John Mullane was
certainly impressed with
the professional manner
in the way the young Blues
took the points. With three
games to go before the finals
the Blues can now hone their
team work skills.
Final Scores. Ballan. 8. 2.

Best - L. Hodge, C. Pascoe, A.
Furlong, H. Lyle, L. Hallett,
D. Marruso.
After 10 straight wins for
the Under 12s, the balloon
finally burst. In tough conditions the Towners were
more accurate up forward.
The Blues had their share
of the ball. Cody Gates and
Johny Horan played really
well and Lucas Smits ruck
work was outstanding. In
defence Daniel Pascoe put
in a stand-out performance.
The early starters opened
well and scored the first goal
but they battled to follow it
up with another. The Blues
were coming home well but
ran out of time.
Final Scores. Ballan. 1. 3.
9. lost Dunnstown. 2. 1. 13
Best - L. Smits, C. Gates, J.

By Jessica Howard
Moorabools biggest rivals
have put aside their competitive edge to raise money
for families battling cancer.
Darley Junior FootballNetball Club, who hosted
the annual rivalry match
against Bacchus Marsh on
Sunday July 17, raised more
than $10,000 in support of
four families at the club.
Junior club president Matt
Colley said the donations
would help to cover costly
expenses whilst the families
were struggling.
There are four families
here at the club, each with
a parent that has been diagnosed with cancer. That is
just unbelievable, he said.
To have to go through
something like that would
be so hard, so we figured it
was in the best interest of the
club to help them out where
we can. These families are
going through tough times,
and with only one parent working, we thought it
would be a great idea to help
out.
Mr Colley said the club donated $5000 from canteen

Matt Colley and Darren Smith

and barbecues sales, with
the Bacchus Marsh Football
Netball Club donating $335
of their own.
The
remaining
funds
were contributed by the
community.
It was a really great effort
by all involved, Mr Colley
said.
We figured that if we
could raise around $6000$7000 wed be really happy,
so we were obviously over
the moon when we were told
the final figure and so were
the families They were

very emotional and very

appreciative.
Jumping castles and collection tins were set up on game
day, with an auction held at
the Darley club rooms in the
evening. Ten pieces of merchandise were donated to
the club and auctioned off to
the community.
Mr Colley thanked all those
who donated items to the
auction, and gave special
mention to Aarons Amusements, who provided the
club with the jumping castles at a discounted price.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The 2016 State Little Athletics Cross Country Championships were held at Cruden Farm,
Langwarrin on Saturday. The heavy rain leading up to the Championships made the course
very wet, and with over 12 races during the day, the course became extremely muddy and
heavy underfoot. The freezing temperatures and chilling winds put many runners to the
test in all races.
Congratulations to the following BMLAC athletes on their results
