Motivation: People in our country seem to like watching news,

knowing what is going on in the neighbourhood, involving

themselves in some activist group, etc. My Father, mother, and
even my brother seem to like these. I, on the other hand couldnt
care less. All I know about what is going on in this country are the
JNU protests, the Cast issue, and the odd-even policy being
imposed by AAP. That too, I did not learn myself but heard from
my friends/parents. So, I couldnt fi nd a social issue I would be
interested in knowing a lot about. I instead would love to know
why JNU students are agitated, and IIT students are not, why
my parents like watching news and I dont, etc. So the topic I am
about to discuss is:

Nature versus Nurture

Introduction: The above topic spans Modern Psychological Study Approaches.

Psychology, which starts from biological approach (Nature), goes all the way
through Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Psychology, and Humanism to Behaviourism
(Nurture). Its a years old unanswered question. Although the above topic has
been quite abstract for past many years, I wouldnt be talking about scientific
discoveries, old lying quotes or even Darwins theory. The 2014 close feedback
loop theory for Nature-Nurture influence on human behaviour made the
dichotomy of nature versus nurture quite useless. I instead would be talking
about the influences of inheritance and cognitive learning on human behaviour
by talking about cool case studies. One of them will be my own conducted study
on my friends, one I will take as reference from movies (really cool movies), and
one from past studies conducted by Indian psychologist.
My Experience with a friend: The person I went to first is a classmate of mine. His
life choices match mine in almost every aspects. He is a science Enthusiast, very
less involved in social activities, appreciates sports. His Father is a government
Employ, same as mine. Talking about studies, he doesnt like to remember facts,
use heuristics, or even opt for courses he doesnt believe he can do at the
moment. He likes solving physics problems on mathematical background, and
watching cricket. He is a moderately motivated person. Although all his aspects
seem to match mine, he has different opinion when it comes to social learning,

media, politics, and so on. He finds them interesting. I tried to find out why
because I didnt get that kind of kick with politics, or social problems.
I found that the difference lied in schooling. He was a student of a strict
Kannad district board; I was a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya. Whereas I was
involved in playing, he was asked to read The Times of India . He says that he
didnt like it at first, but when he got used to it; it got easy and fun.
Recent Watched Movie: Now, my second example in my exploration to Genetics
versus Environment has its basis on a movie, a very cool one. Tango Charlie!
You must watch this. Its a movie by director Mani Shankar. Its theme is Indian
Terrorism. There isnt a single aspect of Indian Terrorism it hasnt covered. From
Naxals, Border Fights, Hindu Muslim riots all the way to Kashmir issue,
everything. But I am not going into the details of it. The moral of the movie is as
quoted by the director at the end, Real Soldiers are not born, but bred.
A Simple man who from his childhood only learnt Art-History, who only knows
about love and caring, learnt to be a fierce soldier within a year. Watching the
movie you will see how it turned his, the circumstances and the company he was
with, everything influenced his. Although he got something new, he was not a
changed man. You can see the part where he feels guilty for mistakenly shooting
a civilian.
Finally, some Psychological Case Study Results: Reporter Daniel Golman in New
York Times found out that two separated twins although should genetically be
the same were very different when raised under different circumstances and
situations. Some of his interesting findings are:
1. Two genetically identical twins had more than 50% chances of being on
different scale of happiness/well-being when raised in different environment.
2. Since the two twins had almost identical immune system, they had same tooth
fall rates.

Conclusions: The above findings along with the case I discussed about my friend
and the movie Tango Charlie clearly suggest to me that, although Nature
(genetics) is intact, your cant really change your biological features much but
Nurture plays very important role when it comes to adaptation. Two twins being
genetically same might have the same health condition and immunity level, they
will differ on their happiness level. Although war zone changes a guy in many
aspects, which ultimately lead him to his survival (referring to the Bollywood
movie), he is same when it comes to humanity after all. The first part in which I
discussed about my friend cannot conclude many things since he is still in
learning period. But his dedication does motivate me to do better in future.
