Learning Outcomes
This paper has four learning outcomes:
1. Collect business data.
2. Compile and summarise business data.
3. Apply statistical data analyses.
4. Use the results of statistical data analyses.
These outcomes should relate to the production of selected products in a small business. The
products selected can be real or simulated but must be relevant to the students activities and
experience.

Course outline

Students will be able to:
1.1 Identify possible uses of business statistical data.
Including planning, forecasting, decision making, controlling, reporting.
1.2 Identify data required in selected business situations.
Including types, sources, qualities and minimum amounts of data.
1.3 Identify techniques for collecting data and sample sizes.
1.4 Collect relevant data using a range of survey techniques.
Outcome 2: Compile and summarise business data
Students will be able to:
2.1 Identify required data formats for selected business situations.
2.2 Summarise data into required formats using graphs.
Pie graphs
Histograms
Line graphs
Bar graphs
4

2.3 Summarise data into required formats using numerical measures.

Frequency distribution tables
Outcome 3: Apply statistical data analyses
Students will be able to:
3.1 Identify required outcomes for data analyses in selected business situations.
3.2 Use financial mathematics in statistical data analyses.
Including calculation of percentages, ratios and simple interest, preparation of cash
flows.
3.3 Analyse data using a variety of inferential analysis techniques.
Probability rules
Sampling distributions of a mean and a proportion
Confidence intervals for a single mean and proportion
3.4 Analyse data using a variety of bivariate analysis techniques.
Correlation and linear regression
Time series
