Observations
Describe the evidence you see to support each element (e.g., What is the teacher doing?
What are the students doing?). If you do not observe an element, write N/A and include
suggestions for what could have been done.
The teacher told the students they were going to have the challenge of being a reality TV
show producer. The teacher seemed to do a decent job of hooking the students attention
with this. Then she focused the attention on the objective and purpose of the lesson, which
was using logic, close read, and determine themes and concepts as it related to the
purpose of creating a teaser for a TV show. I did not see any evidence where she activated
prior knowledge. The anticipatory set was effective, but it could have been improved a bit by
activating the students prior knowledge, perhaps by asking the students what tasks they
perceived a reality TV show producer did. This would have made the students draw from
their prior knowledge to think about what this type of producer does.

The teacher did a good job to provide the essential information to the students for their
assignment for the lesson. She gave them a reality TV show teaser sheet and thoroughly
went over what was expected of the students. She had the students work on the
assignment in groups. She thoroughly went over each step of the assignment, and provided
a couple brief examples before the students began it. The only thing I see where she could
have improved on this is asking the students if they had any questions or concerns after
she gave certain examples of what they were expected to do. I did not see her do this in the
video.

All of the students were actively participating in this group activity. The teacher went around
to the various groups, sat in with them, asked questions, and engaged in discourse with the
students. She did a really good job of making the students figure out solutions to potential
issues on their own. She did this by asking them questions to which she knew the answers
would point them in a positive and productive direction. All of the students were providing
feedback to her questions. Sometimes they were all talking at once, but I understand why
she didnt stop them, because they were critically thinking and engaged. But I believe she
could have improved the situation by, after a few seconds of everyone participating at the
same time, asking students to give their thoughts one by one, so all of them would benefit.

The teacher used one strategy to determine whether all students understood the objectives.
The strategy was used only at the end of the lesson when she asked the students to raise
their hands if they used each of the three objectives in the assignment. She did have
numerous discussions with the groups, so this part of the lesson could have been greatly
improved by discussing how certain objectives were being used while she was talking with
each group individually, and not just at the very end of class.

Guided Practice
Did the teacher provide time for every
student to demonstrate understanding by
practicing new learning with guidance
(from the teacher and/or peers)?

Closure
Did the teacher AND the students say/do
something to summarize lesson
objectives and solidify new learning?

The teacher did provide time for every student to demonstrate understanding by practicing
new learning with guidance. While in groups, the students were able to discuss with their
peers and demonstrate an understanding of the objectives throughout their group
assignment. The teacher might have done a more thorough job had she had each group
describe a specific example of an objective to the rest of the class.
The teacher did summarize the lesson objectives by asking the students, by a show of
hands, if they did/learned the specific objectives for the days lesson. The teacher couldve
done a much better job with closure by simply having the students give some specific
examples of how they actually learned the objectives and what they were, in relation to their
assignment.
