CENTRAL COLLEGES OF THE PHILIPPINES

#52 AURORA BOULEVARD

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
TEACHING GUIDE IN EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCES
TOPIC/LESSON NAME: EXOGENIC AND ENDOGENIC PROCESSES
CONTENT STANDARDS:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
1. Geologic processes that occur on the surface of the earth such as weathering, erosion, mass wasting, and
sedimentation (include the role of the ocean basins in the formation of sedimentary rocks).
2. Geologic processes that occur within the earth.
3. The folding and faulting of rocks.
FORMATION STANDARDS:
The learners shall be able to:
1. Conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic hazards that your community may experience.
2. Conduct a survey or design a study to assess the possible hyrdometeorological hazards that your community
may experience.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
The learners:
1. Describe how rocks undergo weathering.
2. Explain how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere.
3. Make a report on how rocks and soil move downslope due to the direct action of gravity.
4. Describe where the earths internal heat comes from.
5. Describe how the magma is formed (magmatism)
6. Describe what happens after the magma is formed (plutonism and volcanism).
7. Describe the changes in mineral components and texture of rocks due to the changes in pressure and
temperature (metamorphism).
8. Compare and contrast the formation of the different types of igneous rocks.
9. Describe how rocks behave under different types of stress such as compression, pulling apart, and shearing.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this lesson, learners are able to:
1.a. evaluate the process of weathering.
1.b. differentiate physical from chemical weathering.
1.c. suggest an examples of physical and chemical weathering.
2.a. analyse the processes involved in the erosion sequence and deposition.
2.b. reconstruct through diagram on how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposition.
3.a. create an investigation that follows the steps of scientific method about the downward movement of rocks and
soil.
3.b. suggest ways on how rocks and soil move downslope under the influence of gravity.
4.a. evaluate why earths interior is hot.
4.b. compare the different sources of heat in the deep earth.
4.c. infer how heat inside the earth is tapped as a source of energy (geothermal) for human use.
5.a. evaluate the process of how magma is formed.
5.b. analyze the possible geologic events that occur in the formation of magma.
6.a. write the important considerations to generate magma.
6.b. suggest ways of adding heat to generate magma.
7.a. evaluate the concept of metamorphism.
7.b. differentiate the contact metamorphism from regional metamorphism.
7.c. predict the factors that influences the changes in mineral components and texture of rocks.
8.a. evaluate the processes involved in the formation of the different types of igneous rocks.
8.b. create the processes involved in the formation of the different types of igneous rocks.
9.a differentiate the compressional (bottom), tensional (top), and shearing (middle).
TIME ALLOTMENT: 2 WEEKS 500 MINUTES (10 MEETNG: 50 MINUTES PER MEETING)

PROCEDURES:
I.

II.

Introduction
Assign one student to lead the prayer.
Check the attendance, seating arrangement and fixing the room.
Ask the students the following questions:
a. How the geologic processes and regimes operated, resulting in the present physiographic
landscape?
b. How weathering and erosion changes the surface of earth?
c. How do volcanic eruptions and earthquakes move and shake the rocks of earth?
Motivation
L.O 1a; 1b; 1C; 2A; 2B
Four pics one word: prepare at least five sets of pictures that are related to exogenic or endogenic
processes on earth. Ask the students to guess the name of the process depicted on each set of
pictures, and classify the process as either exogenic or endogenic.

III.

Instruction/delivery
L.O. 1a; 1b; 1c
Introduction and ask the learners to differentiate physical from chemical weathering, and cite examples
for each type of weathering.
L.O. 3a; 3b
Ask the learners to identify the different types of mass wasting based on the type of motion.
L.O. 4.a; 4.b; 4.c
Discuss and ask the learners to name the sources of earths internal heat and the forms they assume
on their emplacement in the crust.
L.O. 7.a; 7.b; 7.c
Discuss and ask the learners the effects of altering the condition of rocks subjected to pressure and
temperature.
L.O. 9.a
Introduction and describe the different stresses on rocks.

IV.

Application/practice
L.O. 8.a; 8.a; 9.a;
Think-pair-share. Post or write on the board a topic or questions about types of stress that influence
rock behaviour. Give time for the students to think about the topic or question. Then, instruct them to

pair-off and discuss the topic or answer to the question with their partner. Finally, call on some students
to share their insights/answers with the whole class.
V.

Enrichment
L.O. 1.a; 1.b; 1.c; 2.a; 2.b; 3.a; 3.b; 5.a; 5.b; 6.a; 6.b; 7.a; 7.b; 7.c.
Ask the learners to answer to reflect upon question, If geological processes seem to bring risk to
human safety, where then is a safe place to live? Is there ever any? Then, call on some students to
share their answer with the class.
L.O. 8.a; 8.b
To learn the different types of igneous rocks and their characteristics, ask the learners to visit
http://geology.about.com/od/rocks/a/Rock-Picture-Index.htm and click on the rock type to view its
picture and features.

VI.

Evaluation
Unit test based on prepared test paper and graded recitation.
