Ethernet:

Ethernet is the most popular physical layer LAN technology in use today. It defines
the number of conductors that are required for a connection, the performance
thresholds that can be expected, and provides the framework for data transmission.
Ethernet is popular because it strikes a good balance between speed, cost and ease
of installation. These benefits, combined with wide acceptance in the computer
marketplace and the ability to support virtually all popular network protocols, make
Ethernet an ideal networking technology for most computer users today. The
Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers developed an Ethernet standard
known as IEEE Standard 802.3. This standard defines rules for configuring an
Ethernet network and also specifies how the elements in an Ethernet network
interact with one another. By adhering to the IEEE standard, network equipment and
network protocols can communicate efficiently.

Signal Transmission:
Ethernet uses Differential signaling which is a method for electrically transmitting
information using two complementary signals. The technique sends the same
electrical signal as a differential pair of signals, each in its own conductor. The pair
of conductors can be wires (typically twisted together) or traces on a circuit board.
The receiving circuit responds to the electrical difference between the two signals,
rather than the difference between a single wire and ground. The opposite
technique is called single-ended signaling.
Transmission Medium:
The most common choice for Ethernet transmission medium is Copper Cable. Data
is transmitted from one point to another by using standard network cable. The most
typical is CAT 5 cable that uses a data + and a data- core for both the transmit and
receive lines. Another popular cable is CAT 6.
Encoding:

Manchester encoding is the most popular encoding system using for Ethernet
transmissions. The data and clock are combined into one signal. If the clock was not
sent with the data, then the receiver would not know when to sample the signal to
extract the digital values. A long string of nulls (zeroes) will no longer look like a
dead or disconnected line. A long sting of ones no longer look like a stuck level. The
encoded signal has a more balanced energy profile, i.e. the voltage averaged over
time should tend toward zero.
Ethernet Interface:
Ethernet networking interface refers to a circuit board or card installed in a personal
computer or workstation, as a network client. A networking interface allows a
computer or mobile device to connect to a local area network (LAN) using Ethernet
as the transmission mechanism. There are many Ethernet standards that an
Ethernet networking interface must comply with varying transmission speeds and
error correction types/rates available.

Multiplexing:
Multiplexing (sometimes contracted to muxing) is a method by which multiple
analog or digital signals are combined into one signal over a shared medium. Most
popular multiplexing techniques for Ethernet is TDM (Time Division Multiplexing),
FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing), SDM (Space Division Multiplexing).
