Shell ConSep Trays


Exceeding the limits:
highest capacity tray on the market!
Sulzer Chemtech can offer mass transfer devices in
conjunction with Shell Global Solutions with a capacity
up to 80% higher than conventional trays and up to
50% higher than any other high performance tray while
maintaining high mass transfer efciency - the Shell
ConSep trays. These trays can be used reliably in
renery, petrochemical and offshore applications, and
have now been successfully tested at independent
Fractionation Research Institute (F.R.I.).

Description

ConSep trays utilise the principle of de-entrainment


by centrifugal force to remove the gravitational limitation of jet ood. Separation of the entrained liquid
before entering the next tray allows very high vapor
velocities to be achieved in the column. The ConSep
tray combines the large bubbling area and liquid
handling capacity of the contacting Shell HiFi trays
and a centrifugal separator in a single stage (Figure 1):
Con(tact) and Sep(arator). The trays have been
successfully applied in systems with vapor to liquid
ratios close to unity, such as Main Fractionators and
Debutanizers. Tray deck consists of sieves, movable
or xed valves.

Experience
Several Debutanizers and a hydro cracking unit Main
Fractionator have been tted with ConSep trays in
recent years (see Table 2).

Typical applications are Deethanizer, Depropanizer,
Debutanizer, Main Fractionator, Pump-around, C2 Splitter, C3 Splitter and for cases above the system limit.
