Assignment #2 Reflection
06.23.16

In our previous class discussion, we talked extensively about school safety and
safety preparedness. School safety and preparedness has become the number one priority
for many school districts and leaders over the past decades. Safety has become a critical
part of both public and private schools since 911. Everyday millions of students attend
private and public school, learning and interacting in relative security and safety. But,
every so often that vibrant learning environment is shattered by horrific tragedy.
(Columbine Massacre, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook etc.) School safety raises safety
concerns and in response to these events schools have made an effort to address similar
situations by planning and practicing lockdown emergency drills. The goal of theses
drills is to get students into a secure place as quickly as possible.
A school leaders responsibility also lies with providing safety, disaster
preparedness, and a disaster prevention plan. As an aspiring leader having and
performing these evacuation drills is one of the most important parts of the school safetyemergency plan. These emergency drills will allow me to see how well things operate
and how things can be corrected if there is a problem. If there should ever be an event or
an emergency where an actually evacuation is necessary, I do not want to wait and learn
which parts of the evacuation plan does not work.
As an aspiring school leader I must educate myself and obtain the necessary
knowledge of all issues relating to school safety, emergency, and security. I must
familiarize myself with the three main steps in the lockdown emergency plan. Step one is
to close and lock the classroom door, step two is to cover the door window into the

hallway, and step three is to gather all the students in the lease visible and most secure
area of the classroom. I should communicate and practice these plans regularly and often
to give teachers, parents and students a sense of security. As a result of having these drills
and plans in place I will be taking preventative and protective measures to stop an
emergency from taking place.
The ISLLC Standards 3 states that school leaders must have vast and extensive
knowledge of managing the operations, and resources of the school for a safe, efficient,
and effective learning environment. Safety is priority; knowledge of the emergency plan
is critical and in order to fulfill carry out these measures school leaders must develop a
comprehensive school emergency operations plan that addresses a range of threats and
emergencies.
First and foremost and planning team must be in place and consist of a wide range
of individuals to take into account a wide range of possible threats and emergencies that
impact the school. The team should include a broad variety of school staff, including
administrator, teachers, nurses, cafeteria staff, parent coordinator and individuals that
serve student with disabilities. Planning is essential and must be in place and supported
on all levels of leadership.
Within the planning process, each roles and responsibilities must be explicitly
defined; each person involved in the development of the plan must know his or her role
and responsibilities. The planning team will develop a course of action that involves
assessing and deciding which of the treats and the level of treats is of high priority, and
develops goals and objectives for each. The goals should be broad and general, it should
be a statement that indicate what should happened if there were ever an incident. The

goals should help to identify when the drills are completed and what defines a successful
drill.
The planning team should develop three goals for addressing emergencies. It
should have a desired outcome for before, during, and after the emergency. Again these
goals are broad in scope and will adjust to address any circumstances that arise. The
planning team must develop an objective to address emergency. The objective should be
specific in details. After developing the objective for the emergency they will develop a
plan of action to deal with specific function. A function includes evacuating, providing
medical care, and accounting for all students, staff, and guest.
