Pottery I- Project 2 of 5- 2016

Ceramic Spirit Rattle (2 week project)

UNIT
Introduction to Pottery/Ceramics
THEME
Students in Pottery I will create 5 projects. They will explore all three types of hand
building techniques, pinch, coil and slab. They will have many experiences with clay and
opportunities to problem solve. Students who take Pottery I will be eligible to take
Pottery II. 1st Project: Additive/Subtractive Pinch pots, 2nd Project: Ceramic Spirit
Rattle, 3rd Project: Coil Vessel, 4th Project: Slab Mug, 5th Project: Free Choice project
(combining at least 2 of 3 hand building techniques).
RATIONALE
Students will create a unique and original designed ceramic Spirit Rattle after being
inspired by the historical knowledge of rattles. Pinch technique is one of the three main
hand-building techniques. Students will further their clay experience using the pinch
method to create a hollow clay form. This project prepares students for hand building
mastery. Students will develop skills in documenting their work and also sharing with the
class using Linoit.com.

Formative Checks
-Checking students sketches will be the first formative check
-Walking around during student construction time
Summative Assessment
-Student self reflection in Linoit.com
-Contribution to group critique in Linoit.com
-Final outcome of project (Construction, Glazing, understanding of Principles and
Elements of Art, Creativity, Reflection and Critique)
Closure
-Reflect on project as a whole class using Linoit.com. It will serve as a collective
and universal place to document artwork and learning.
MATERIALS AND AIDS
- to 1 lb. of clay for each pinch pot (2)
-colored glazes
-paper towel for wrapping balls of clay

-assorted hand building tools

-toothpicks for venting
-phone or ipad for documentation to share on Linoit.com

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Students will learn about Rattles and the symbolic role it had on cultures throughout
history. Students will learn of the original materials used for making a rattle and its
purpose. Originality in artwork is highly emphasized during this project. Students will
learn how to remix ideas to create their own ideas. Students will discover the properties
of each of the different types of clay and uses for each. Students will watch a
demonstration of how to combine two pinch pots, how to create a hollow rattle and how
to vent the rattle. Students will experience how to use Linoit.com to document their work,
to evaluate, to reflect, to share and to critique their peers.
PERFORMANCE GOALS
All students will be inspired by historical and modern ceramic rattle examples. They
will remix and design 8 sketches of their own in their sketchbook (keeping in mind
originality). All students sketches will be discussed and approved by the teacher.
Teacher will check for originality, creativity and complexity according to individual skill
level.
Students will learn by demonstration how to create a rattle by combining two pinch
pots. They will create balls of clay and wrap them individually with paper towel to ensure
they wont stick to the inside walls of the rattle (inserting before attaching the two pinch
pots together). Students will learn how to add vents to the rattle (by inserting toothpicks
or creating slits) to prevent explosion in kiln. After the bisque firing of the rattles,
students will get their first chance at experimenting with colored glazes.
Students will document their art making process with pictures using their phones or
ipads. To wrap up project after completion students will claim a space in Linoit.com
Pottery I group board. They will post a before and after picture of their rattle, along with
3 post it notes. (#1 and #2 near their images)
1. Students will state what they learned while making this project and how they had to problem solve.
2. Students will tell the audience their thought process and intention for their artwork.
3. Students will find another peers post to comment on. They will create one sticky note and leave two
positive comments, also one comment with constructive feedback or they could ask the artist a question
about their work.
