Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the management function. It will focus on the theory and fundamental concepts of management including
planning, organizing, leadership and control. This class will review the evolution of management thought, function and practice and will emphasize
approaches and emerging concepts.
This course is also intended to present a broad introduction to the process of management in organization and the dynamic world of
managers. After taking this course students should be able to understand and explain how managers contribute to the productivity and performance
of their organizations, what managers do and the skills they must have to achieve high levels of productivity, how managers plan, organize, direct
and control the work of others to achieve organizational goals and objectives, and some of the reasons why managers differ in their ability to produce
effective results.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the first semester, the learners must be able to:
1. describe the basic functions of management and the roles that managers adopt to perform the functions of management,
2. identify the major components of an organizations task environment and explain how each component in the task environment impacts the
organization,
3. describe the different levels of planning in an organization and explain the difference between strategic, tactical, operating and unit plans,
4. describe the different kinds of controls that are used in organizations and explain how different controls should be matched to the strategy
and structure of an organization,
5. explain why good leadership is critical for success as a manager,
6. discuss the difference between transformational and transactional leadership,
7. outline the main elements of a communication system,
8. explain why many organizational change efforts fail, and identify what managers can do to a failure,
