Sample One Week Lesson Plan Trait: Word Choice

The teacher will perform a read aloud of Cassies Word Quilt.


During this read aloud, the teacher will point out all of the objects
Cassie has highlighted and chosen for her quilt.
Teacher will write out these items on his/her own drawn quilt and
began adding items.

Practice

Students will brainstorm unique items to be written into their own


quilt
Students will write these words and items down to be shared.

Share

Students will share out some of the words they have come up with
for their quilt.

Students bring in their own items to add to their quilt.


Students brainstorm about what makes these items special. What
kind of story can they tell?

Share

Students share out an item they have added to their quilt and the
story behind it.

From the items, the teacher reviews that these items can be
inspiration for a story or remind students of why they are special.
Teacher will pick one that he/she has told a story about and model
how to had vivid verbs to the story. What exactly is happening in this
story? What am I doing? What does my item do?

Independent
Practice

Students brainstorm a list of vivid verbs for at least 1 of their items


Students will finish drafting their story and begin to revise it with
more vivid words to enhance the story.

Share

Students will share out some of their vivid verbs and how they have
added to their item stories.

previous days, along with editing and conventions.

Teacher will review editing and model how an unedited paper can
take away from what the audience is able to gain from the authors
word choice.
Model the use of resources and strategies to spell words correctly
and add in conventions.

Practice

Students will continue to edit their item stories and word quilts for
spelling and other conventions.

Share

Students share out what changes they have made and what words
that they now know how to spell.

Students will work on their illustrations of items for their quilt and
story.
Students will combine their quilt and story with thoughtful spacing
and consistent handwriting.
Students will share their published word quilts and item story.
