HetNet /Small cell planning & optimization approach

Networks consist of several technologies, different UEs types, different application, different RF performances area specific, different type
of users (indoor, outdoor, residential etc)
The collection, correlation and analysis of these info drive the network and service optimization for end user QoE improvement and
capacity optimization

The mobile network ecosystem is nowdays very complicated and OSS statistics are not
enough to have a clear picture of the actual status. There is the need of a new approach to
collect and analyse such data and drive properly the network optimization and expansion

Reference European Operator Small Cell Study

Project Overview
Main Deliverables

Objectives

Scope

Estimate the need for Small Cells for

2014/15/16 taking into account the
Operator traffic growth and the Operator
frequency strategy.

Step 1: Kick-Off Preparation

Detailed scope and planning presented and
agreed, and all the pre-requisites well identified
and availably confirmed.

Detailed 3G/4G radio capacity needs for

Paris till 2016 (based on the operator
traffic growth scenarios).

Step 2: 3G/4G Capacity Dimensioning

Identification of the 3G and 4G macro cells that
will reach radio capacity limitations from 2014
to 2016.

Accurate localization of the 3G traffic

hotspots in Paris.

How many 3G/4G Small Cells are

needed ?
Where should they be located ?
When do they have to be deployed ?
How 3G/4G Small Cells will offload
the 3G/4G traffic of the overloaded
macro cells ?
Provide a method for a Small Cells
radio design based on the accurate
location of traffic hot spots and a list of
potential micro/pico site candidates.

33

10-April-/2014

Step 3: 3G Live Traffic Geo-location

Geo-localization of the 3G traffic and identify
traffic hot spots below the overloaded macro
cells identified in Step 2.
Step 4: 3G/4G Small Cell Planning
Design the 3G/4G Small Cell layer required to
offload the overloaded macro cells.

Detailed Small Cell design for Paris with

the identification of the best micro/pico site
candidates to use.
Proven methodology to be applied for the
next cities.

Step 5: Wrap Up - Final WorkShop

At completion of the project, joint
Operator/NSN workshop to share results and
deliverables.

NSN Confidential

2014 Nokia Solutions and Networks. All rights reserved.

Detailed process
1. Identify the Node Bs
could be expanded
2. Where it is not
possibile, plan new
HW solutions such
as small cells, AAS,
6 sectors etc
3. Plan the RNC
expansion
considering also
signalling impact

Plan the required capacity expansion in accordance to the expected

traffic growth considering the most efficient solutions

Microcell Density
Adding microcells to the network tends to improve both coverage and capacity
The initial gains are relatively large
Subsequent incremental gains reduce as the density of microcells becomes greater, i.e.
the return on investment becomes smaller
Individual cell throughputs can start to decrease as the density of microcells becomes
high and levels of intercell interference increase
System level simulations have been completed to quantify the optimal number of
microcells below an umbrella co-channel macrocell

Average Macro cell throughput performance

Adding Small cells can reduce the Macro cell throughput

Small cells increase the interference level, therefore macro cell throughput will decrease
-

For dense macro (ISD < 500m), the macro throughput decreased up to 18% with 8 small cells per macro
For higher ISDs (e.g. 1732m), small cell addition has less of an impact on the macro throughput

Various simulation assumptions (e.g. uniform UE distribution in larger macro ISD) can lead to unreliable
results where cell throughput can be even increased
Real network simulation uniform UE distribution

Adding Small cells can reduce the Macro cell throughput

In other examples, where more UEs attached to the small cells (thanks to HotSpot distribution) macro
throughput was still impacted
Concluding, this trend depends highly on density of the macro cell UEs in close vicinity of the small cell

Small cell throughput

Small Cells can achieve high average cell throughputs

This can happen especially if:

-

Small cells deployed in systems where Macro ISD is large

Small cells deployed in locations where users are close to site (for example, within 40 meters)

Fewer users on Small cell means more RF resources per users as shown in various simulations

UE experience
Average user experience is significantly improved after deploying Small cells

Field trials proved that Small Cells provide equal or

better UE experience
- Users are offloaded from a Macro to Small cell,
providing fewer users contending for
resources on the Macro
- Users are closer to the serving cell, thus having a
better SINR
