AS 2473 1996
PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee ME/2 on Gas Cylinders to supersede AS 24731990. It is the result of a
consensus among representatives on the Joint Committee to produce it as an Australian
Standard.
This Standard introduces a number of new connections which fully differentiate valve outlets
by gas and maximum filling pressure. It also makes minor changes to the figures in
Appendix B to correct previous errors in the metrication carried out in the 1981 edition.
Also in this Standard is the introduction of a program of conversion of certain types of gas
outlets. The conversion concerns compressed air and inert gases (including shielding gases)
and the details are given in Clause 12 of this Standard.
Formerly, Type 10 was specified for oxygen, air and the permanent inert gases for filling
pressures up to 20 000 kPa (200 bar) at 15C. Type 11 connection was specified for oxygen,
air and the inert permanent gases with a filling pressures above 20 000 kPa (200 bar) at 15C.
In this edition, connections from ISO 5154 are introduced for air and permanent inert gases
for filling pressures up to 20 000 kPa (200 bar) at 15C. Connections from CGA V-1 are used
with minor adjustments to the cut-off pressures. This change allows specific oxygen-only
connections. The existing Type 10 connection is retained for use at up to 17 500 kPa
(175 bar) at 15C. A new Type 10.5 connection is introduced for use at up to 20 000 kPa
(200 bar) at 15C. The existing Type 11 connection is retained for use at up to 25 000 kPa
(250 bar) at 15C and a new Type 16 connection (similar to Connection 701 from ANSI/GGA
V-1) is introduced for service at up to 31 500 kPa (315 bar) at 15C. For air, inert gases and
high-pressure flammable gases, connections are introduced for filling pressures up to
31 500 kPa (315 bar) and up to 42 500 kPa (425 bar), both pressures being at 15C.
Additionally, outlet details for gases not specifically listed have been revised, including new
connections from BS 341 for use with small cylinders.

The term normative has been used in this Standard to define the application of the appendix
to which it applies. A normative appendix is an integral part of a Standard.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA
Australian Standard
Valves for compressed gas cylinders (threaded outlet)
1 SCOPE This Standard specifies inlet and outlet connection threads, material, testing,
valve spindle dimensions and operations, and marking requirements for compressed gas
cylinder valves with threaded outlet connections for a nominated range of gases. It also
specifies dimensional details of the outlet connecting parts.
Appendix A specifies a special valve for use on small seamless gas cylinders filled with
carbon dioxide and its future use is undecided (see Note 2).
NOTES:
1 Requirements for compressed gas cylinder valves, with a pin-indexed system of outlet
connections (for medical application) or with a diameter-indexed system of outlet connections,
are specified in AS 2472 and AS 2474.
2 Comment is sought as to whether this special valve is relevant in todays industry.
This Standard does not apply to valves for portable gas cylinders of less than 11 kg capacity
for self-contained breathing apparatus, or to valves for fire extinguishers.
NOTE: Comment is sought, especially from the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
industries, as to the relevance of this 11 kg capacity in todays industry.

NOTE: Thread designations in Tables 2 to 5 are from various origins, and care is necessary in their
interpretation. In the designation 0.82514 NGOLHEXT, the value 0.825 refers to the major
diameter and 14 refers to threads per inch. In the designation G 5 8 RH INT, G58 comes from
AS 1722.2 and RH (or LH), and INT (or EXT) have been added in this Standard to
indicate whether right or left hand threads are specified and whether the thread in the valve
is internal or external.
For filling pressures up to 20 000 kPa (200 bar) at 15C where the gas is not listed in
Table 3, or is a gas mixture, the valve outlet connection thread, and type of outlet connection
shall comply with Table 5 for the appropriate classification of gas or gas mixture.
For pressure regulating cylinder valves, the pressure regulated outlet connection shall comply
with the requirements of Tables 2, 3, 4 or 5 according to the maximum outlet pressure
specified for the connection. The outlet of the low pressure side of this type shall be
protected by a safety device rated no higher than the maximum pressure specified in Tables 2,
3, 4 or 5 for the outlet connection fitted.
4.3 Gas pressure and material compatibility Only regulators, manifolds and ancillary
equipment, rated for the appropriate pressure and compatibility with the relevant gas shall
be connected to or installed downstream of the valve outlet connection.
5 DIMENSIONS
5.1 Spindle Valves operated by a spindle shall have a handwheel not separable from the
spindle without the use of tools or shall have a squared end to the spindle (see Figure 3). The
dimension of the squared end shall be that nominated in Tables 2, 3 or 4, as appropriate, and
as shown in Figure 3.
5.2 Outlet connection The outlet connection shall conform to the dimensions given in
Figures 4 to 28, inclusive, as specified in Clause 4.2.
5.3 Safety devices All safety devices fitted to a cylinder valve shall be in accordance with
AS 2613.
For pressure regulating valves, the outlet side shall be protected by a safety device rated no
higher than the maximum pressure specified for their outlet connection (see Clause 4.2).
COPYRIGHT
AS 24731996
6 VALVE OPERATION Spindles for valve operation shall close the valve when rotated
clockwise (when viewed from the spindle end). The spindle gland and spindle-retaining nut
shall not be loosened by operation of the spindle.
The spindle shall not be separable from the valve body without the prior removal of the
spindle-retaining device by the use of tools.
NOTE: Locking compound is not considered to be an adequate means to ensure the retaining nut
is not loosened by operation of the spindle.
7 MATERIALS Materials used for valve components in contact with the contained gas
shall be compatible with the contained gas.
NOTE: Some compatible materials are listed in Table 2 and Table 3.
The copper content of the material of valves for use with acetylene gas shall not exceed
70 percent.
8
9 PRESSURE RATING The rated pressure of a cylinder valve shall be not less than the
test pressure of the cylinder to which it is intended to be fitted.
This rated pressure shall be nominated by the valve manufacturer and shall be verified by
testing in accordance with the requirements of Clause 10.2.
10
TESTING
10.1 Tests The mechanical strength of the valve or of the valve protection as appropriate
shall be verified by the impact strength test in accordance with the requirements of
Clause 10.2.
Pressure tests shall be in accordance with the requirements of Clause 10.3.
Licensed to Sean Blythe on 21 Jul 2006. For Committee AG-009 use only
10.2 Mechanical test When a valve is tested in accordance with Appendix D, using the
impact values given in Table 1, there shall be no discernible leakage of gas from the valve
or, when a valve/cylinder combination is tested, there shall be no discernible leakage of gas
from the cylinder. The discernible leakage gas shall be taken as not exceeding 5 mL/h.
After impact testing, the valve shall be capable of both closing without leakage as well as
opening to enable a controlled release of gas. If fracture of the handwheel occurs during
impact testing, it shall be disregarded for acceptance purposes. However, tools may be used
to demonstrate operability. Any leakage resulting from deformation of the valve protection
shall be cause for failure of the test.
As the tests specified in this Clause are destructive, a claim of compliance with this Clause
relies on a suitable sampling plan. Appendix C sets out such a plan.
10.3
Pressure Tests
10.3.1 Hydrostatic An internal hydrostatic pressure of no less than the test pressure
defined in Clause 9, for which the valve is rated, shall be applied to an assembled valve. No
discernible leakage shall occur. During this test, all pressure-relief devices shall be blanked
off. The discernible leakage shall be taken as not exceeding 5 mL/h. Frequency of tests
defined in Appendix C.
10.3.2 Pneumatic An internal pneumatic pressure of no less than the following shall be
applied to every assembled valve:
(a)
For valves not fitted with a pressure-relief deviceno less than the maximum
developed pressure for the valve.
COPYRIGHT
(b)
AS 24731996
For valves fitted with a pressure relief deviceno less than 85 percent of the minimum
relief pressure.
No discernible leakage shall occur through the valve when the valve is closed, or through the
spindle gland when the valve is both fully opened and fully closed.
The discernible leakage shall be taken as not exceeding 5 mL/h.

* The tolerances are taken from AS 1722.1 for similar size threads.
Maximum allowable error in pitch between any two threads whether adjacent or
separated by any amount not exceeding the full length of thread less one full thread
at each end.
The maximum taper error on diameter over the length of taper of a screw gauge
should be measured over the full length less one full thread at each end of gauge.
NO TES:
1 For length tolerances, see AS 1722.1.
2 End faces of plug and ring gauges to be square to the axis of taper to within 0.001
(25.4 + D) full indicator movement, measured as close as possible to the screw thread,
where D = basic major diameter of thread, in millimetres.

APPENDIX C
(b)
Pressure test One valve per 5000 manufactured, or one per batch if the batch is less
than 5000, to provide a hydrostatic test sample.
Every valve not subjected to a hydrostatic test shall be subjected to a pneumatic test.
Licensed to Sean Blythe on 21 Jul 2006. For Committee AG-009 use only
A batch is taken to consist of material or items of a single type, grade, class, size and
composition, and to have been manufactured under essentially the same conditions at
essentially the same time.

NOTE: The test specimen is the valve only where there is no valve protection, or is the
complete cylinder with valve protection and valve where there is valve protection.
(c)
(d)
(e)
(f)
Align the valve or valve protection, or both, in the most adverse position with respect
to the point of striking, i.e. so that the impact will have the greatest effect on valve
breakage, or on valve protection to valve clearance, as appropriate.
Apply the impact, taking suitable precautions to protect personnel and equipment from
injury and damage due to the destructive nature of the test.
Observe the effect of impact on the valve.
Apply the specified pressure to the valve. Without adjustment to the valve, check for
leakage from the valve body, valve components and, where valve protection is under
test, the cylinder.
Open the valve just sufficient to demonstrate the safe release of pressure.
NOTE: Where any handwheel has been damaged, tools may be used to operate the valve.
