Introduction

EDpuzzle (https://edpuzzle.com/) is a web-based educational application that allows

teachers to better use video in the classroom. It can be used with videos from websites like
YouTube, or teachers can upload their own video creations. Teachers can cut, crop, edit, and
record audio, as well as add questions to the lesson being presented, and they can track, monitor,
and grade students. EDpuzzle can be used with many types of instruction, including guided
learning, project-based learning and differentiated instruction. It also makes flipping a classroom
very easy. EDpuzzle also aids in assessment by allowing teachers to add questions to videos that
can be graded through the EDpuzzle grading portal (Kapular, 2014). The EDpuzzle package
includes pre-made videos as well as those from channels that host educational videos such as
YouTube, Khan Academy, LearnZillion, National Geographic, TED Talks, Verisatium,
Numberphile, Crash Course, and Vimeo EDpuzzle contains a feature which tracks student
progress and produces a spreadsheet that the teacher can use to adjust and facilitate instruction.
Teachers can also record audio notes for students to help focus their attention ("EDpuzzle
Support - For Teachers," 2016).

Segmenting Principle
The segmenting principles states that people learn better when information is broken
down into smaller chunks, or segments. Multimedia presentations that are broken down into
smaller segments are more easily processed by learners are following the segmenting principle
(Mayer & Pilegard, 2014). EDpuzzle adheres to the segmenting principle because it allows
teachers to break their presentations into segments that students can more easily understand and
remember, thus reducing the cognitive load. It also allows teachers to include audio notes that

can give additional instructions or background information on the multimedia segments. The
learner can rewatch the segments when they wish, as often as needed.
