Computed seismic loading is an ultimate limit by definition. The computed seismic load
magnitude shall be scaled by the relevant factors of ASCE 7 before inclusion in service
load combinations.

PILE GROUP EFFECT

4.1

Minimum Spacing of Piles

Minimum pile spacing between center to center of pile shall be minimum 2.5 times of the pile
diameter.

(Note 5., RFCC-C-000-CV-TD-003-A18))

Reduction in pile capacity incurred as a result of group effect shall be considered as below.
4.2

Ultimate Capacity of Pile Groups

4.2.1

Pile Group Efficiency

Piles are usually constructed in groups and tied together by a concrete cap at the ground surface.
Piles in closely spaced groups behave differently than single isolated piles because of pile-soil-pile
i t
interactions
ti
that
th t take
t k place
l
in
i the
th group.
It is generally recognized that deflections of a pile in a closely spaced group are greater than
the deflections of an individual pile at the same load because of these interaction effects.
The maximum bending moment in a group will also be larger than that for a single pile, because
the soil behaves as if it has less resistance, allowing the group to deflect more for the same load
per pile.
The most widely recognized standard for quantifying group interaction effects isthe group efficiency
factor, Ge , which is below Equation as the average capacity per pile in a group divided by
the capacity of a single pile (Prakash 1990).

Ge =

(Qu)g
n (Qu)s

Where (Qu)g is the ultimate load capacity of the group, n is the number of piles in the group,
and (Qu)s is the ultimate load capacity of a single pile.

4.2.3

Pile Group Efficiency for Lateral Loading

There are clearly differing views on the literature on the group reduction factor for a laterally
loaded pile group.
In practice, it is the group lateral deflection or the structural capacity of the pile section that
governs the design, with the possible exception of short rigid piles,
It is thererfore considered that the recommendations by Fleming et al (1992) can reasonably

the findings by Poulos & Davis (1980).
Both Elson(1984) and Fleming et al(1992) suggested that a pragmatic approach may be
adopted and recommended that the group reduction factor may be taken as unity where
the center to center pile spacing is equal to or greater than three pile diameters along
directions parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.
For a group of closely spaced piles (spcing /diameter less than 3), the group may be considered
as an equivalent single pile.

Pile Group Efficiency for Uplift Loading

For piles in clays, results of model tests carried out by Meyerhof & Adamds (1968) indicate
that the group reduction factors for uplift are in reasonalble agreement with those reported
by Whitaker (1957) for piles under compression. The result shown in Figure 4.2.2 may therefore
be used for pile groups in clays under tension.
