TOPIC: Differences between argumentative and expository essays.

Argumentative and Expository Essays

The expository and argumentative essays are two variations on the typical basic essay structure
described. Exposition is a type of discourse used to explain, describe or inform. In an expository
essay, the purpose is to give the reader a balanced account of a subject, with a neutral, objective
tone. And the purpose of an argumentative essay is to convince the reader of the validity of
your point of view. Although your essay should still appeal to the reader's logic rather than
emotion, you should clearly state an opinion rather than appearing neutral.
Firstly, the expository essays aims to inform and disseminate knowledge, teaching and
pedagogical purpose on a topic. The informative intention makes in the texts predominates the
referential function. The expository essays can be inform or specialized. Inform essays are texts
that inform about a topic of interest. These aimed at a large public sector, since it does not
require a previous knowledge on the subject of the exhibition as for example notes, textbooks,
encyclopedias, examinations, conferences, collectibles On the other hand, the specialized
essay are texts that have a high degree of difficulty, as they require extensive knowledge on the
subject as for example reports, laws and articles of scientific research
Secondly, argumentative essays is the kind of texts which present the reasons in favor of or
against certain position or thesis, in order to convince the interlocutor or reader. This is a
fundamental way, although not exclusively, value judgments, positive assessments or negative
about the foregoing as for example good, bad, ugly, bello, valid, invalid, suitable or not suitable.
The argumentative discourse is own of the test and of the critical in general. The argument is
based in defending an idea by means of data and reasons or arguments.

Now, the main difference between argumentative essays and expository essays lie in the stand
the student is required to take. In an expository essay the author, dont have too much room to
include your opinions or beliefs about the topic. Youre focusing more on factual statements
than on debatable claims. You usually focus your discussion on what things are or how they
work.
While, in an argumentative essay, though, it is your opinion on things that matters. It is how
well you can support a claim on a topic that has two reasonable sides. In argumentative writing,
youre free to voice your opinions. Youre free to say whatever youd like, as long as you can
back it up and support it with research.
In conclusion, the expository essays explains objectively a few facts with clear and direct
language. These essays answer the question, why is that? Another way, the argumentative
essays defends ideas and expresses views with verbs that express opinion. These essays answers
the questions, what I think? what do you think?
