Objectives:

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to

improve basic flier layout.

Process:

After sketching, I used Adobe

InDesign to create a digital version
of one of my sketches. I put the most
emphasis on the word Graduate to make
it immediately apparent who my audience
was and to grab their attention. I made the
leadership conference text big as well to show
what the events purpose was. I planned my white
space so that the black text would stand out more. I
repeated the bar at the bottom of the flier to create unity
with the design and to show where the focus of the flier was.
I changed some of the text to grey to set those elements apart
from the information on what the event was and unite them in
showing that they all gave information to those who were interested
in attending the event. I was provided with the image, logo and text for
this flier.

Montage
Description:

An inspirational montage made by blending multiple images and using tasteful

typography.

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Date:

May 29, 2016

Course & Section:

Visual Media- Comm 130

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Design a montage with strong focal

point and flow. Unify a layout
with a consistent theme and
dominant message. Learn
to blend two or more images
together gradually, using masks.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one
part of the image.

Process:

Using Photoshop, I resized the image of the

girl and the dog to 8.5 x 11 and made it the the
background. I then used layer masks on all of my
images. I adjusted the opacity of my images and used the
brush tool to blend them in with the background. I started
by taking the picture of the hillside and layering it on top of
the first image. I blended it to make the sky and hillside from the
second image cover the sky and hill in the first image. I then took
the image of the bird and the ocean and layered it on top of the image
of the sky and the first image. I tried to make sure the sky matched up
and the water looked like it became part of the grassy slopes. Then, I took the
image of the cityscape and layered it on top of the first image. Next, I made
the sun stand out more by using the elliptical marquee tool to select the area that
I wanted to focus on and changed the color balance, hue/saturation, and brightness/
contrast until it stood out sufficiently. I then aligned my text to go around the sun and
changed the font and color of key words to make them stand out more.

Letterhead
Description:

Design a matching letterhead and business card using a personally created logo.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Date:

Course & Section:

Visual Media- Comm 130

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Create an original logo to fit a

company or personal image. Use
the new logo to design consistent
layouts for a business card
and letterhead. Letterhead
should be 8.5 x 11.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create a logo

using simple shapes. I then placed my logo
in a new InDesign document. On the top
and the bottom, I decided to add a long, skinny
rectangle with smaller rectangles inside to make the
page look like a film strip overall. I used the alignment
tool to make sure that the boxes were all spaced evenly.
I made it dark orange to tie in the color scheme throughout
the page. I then used the alignment tool to make sure that the
boarders were the same on both sides of the page.

Objectives:

Create an original logo to fit a

company or personal image. Use
the new logo to design consistent
layouts for a business card
and letterhead. Business card
should be 3.5 x 2.

Process:

In InDesign, I created two 3.5 x 2 boxes

that would become my business card. I
placed the logo from the Adobe Illustrator file
then copied and pasted my design elements from
the letterhead into that page. I used the same film
strip design on the top and bottom of the front side of
the card but cropped it so the white boxes wouldnt get
narrower. I put the name and contact information below the
logo, maintaining sufficient white space between the elements.
On the back side of the card, I repeated the dark orange color from
the logo and film lines as the background color. I drew new hexagons
using the Polygon Tool and, instead of recreating the honeycomb, put
the three shapes in a horizontal line. I created a full bleed white hexagon
but moved it up to avoid trapping white space in the corner.

Objectives:

Create three different original logos

to fit a company or personal
image that will appeal to the
audience. Market research:
gather opinions from at least
ten people about which logo
appeals most to them. Use only
the Illustrator tools to create and
draw your logos. Refine one logo with
variations for color.

Abby Simmons

Process:

I created several designs then had people vote on

their favorite. From that information, I chose one design
to refine. I wanted to show an old fashioned film reel
and use the film from it to underline the text. I started by
drawing a dark gray circle using the ellipse tool then creating
smaller black circles within it using the ellipses tool as well. I drew
lines between the smaller circles to make it look more like a film reel,
making them a slightly lighter shade of gray. I then used the curvature
tool to create the film rolling off of the reel. Using the width tool, I adjusted
the thickness of the line in various places. I dragged the roll of film across the
design so it underlined the text. I then moved my text so that it was closer to the
design and it all looked like one unified logo. To have some variety, I created the
first one with a complementary color scheme, the second one in greyscale, and the third
one in a colored box with the design in all white.

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a

.png for a web page. Write content
to describe the process of creating
your logo and how it appeals
to a target audience. Acquire
a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of
CSS. Identify hex colors to match logo,
using Photoshop color picker.

Process:

I first used Notepad++ to code the HTML for the

site. I included the logo I created in a previous project
and text explaining the process of creating it. I then
coded the CSS for the site, drawing on the design of the
logo. I used fonts similar to those in the logo and colors drawn
directly from the logo, using the hex keys from Photoshop. I then
adjusted the layout to make sure everything was aligned properly.
I changed the spacing to group similar design elements together.

Front

Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Course & Section:

Visual Media- Comm 130

Instructor:

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded

document. Create an original, new
logo. Incorporate quality images.
One should be clipped in
Photoshop and text-wrapped
in InDesign so the text follows
the cutout shape of the image. Trim
for a full bleed and print in duplex
(two-sided) color.

Process:

I set up the fold in Adobe InDesign. I made sure

to measure and align the edges so they would print
the way I wanted them to. I then inserted an image
on the front page and flipped it to work better with my
design. I brought my new logo over from Illustrator and
added text under it. I then used the ellipse tool to create a design
in the upper right hand corner that was similar to the design of
the dream catcher in my logo. I took the image on the front, made it
opaque, and set it as the background of the inside pages. On the inside
left page, I took the image into Photoshop, removed the background, then
placed it in my InDesign file. I then wrapped the text around the image. I
repeated the design from the front on the bottom left corner and top right corner
of the inside pages and wrapped text around those as well. On the back page, I
arranged the text the same way that Coachella does on their posters- switching the
alignment with each paragraph. I made all of the text white so it could be read better
on the dark backgrounds.

Photodesign
Description:

Demonstrate photography and photo editing skills. Incorporate an original photo

into a poster layout.

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Date:

Course & Section:

Visual Media- Comm 130

Instructor:

Objectives:

Choose a color scheme, take a

photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into
the layout. Adjust image
levels, saturation, color balance,
sharpen tool on separate layers
for NDE (non-destructive editing).
Use layers to design text, and repeating
graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:

I first picked a color scheme from the area I wanted

to photograph. After taking the photo, I made some
adjustments to it in Photoshop (crop, straighten, add
vibrance/ saturation, modify levels, enhance select colors,
and sharpen select areas). From there I created an 8.5 x 11
document in Photoshop and placed my picture in it. I resized it
to fit then added a boarder to bring out the purple in the flowers. I
added a text box that I made opaque to give the flyer a more elegant
and professional look. I made the text orange to draw attention to the most
important information and contrast it from the rest of the flyer. I used a quote
beneath that text box that I made opaque as well to achieve that same level of
elegance. I added a green bar on top of the text box to bring the green color from
the bushes to the top of the flyer and give the box a clear edge. I created boxes on the
right side to show my color swatches of my chosen color scheme.

Instructor:

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how

pixels and inches work together).
Find, scan and import a
high-quality image. Create a
full-bleed design. Learn to use
only Word design features without
using any Adobe programs, including
Photoshop.

Process:

I first scanned the image into the computer and

placed it in a Word document. I then created text
boxes for the title, body copy, and the date-time-place. I
chose an analogous color scheme so I made the background
orange, the title and D-T-P red, and the body copy on the
left side brick. I aligned all of the text on the left to make clear
lines and aligned the text and picture on the right to create two
columns. Lastly, I underlined the title to separate it from the rest
of the flyer and to draw the viewers attention it it more. Since the
underline was bold and black, it contrasted against the rest of the flyer.
