Unit 9: Law. In the courtroom
Lesson Aims:
* raising expectations and creating involvement in vocabulary tasks;
* enriching vocabulary;
* practicing vocabulary;
* allowing Ss to express ideas on a given vocabulary;
* raising expectations and creating involvement in a listening task.
Activity 1. Warming up (Ex. 1, p. 72)
Aim: Checking if Ss have done their homework correctly
Procedure:
T ST; 5 min
* T asks Ss to read their predictions about the state of the world at the end of
the 21st century.
* T helps when necessary.
Activity 2. Describing a picture and reading extracts from court cases. (Ex. 1
& 2, p. 80)
Aim: improving Ss speaking and reading abilities
Procedure:
ST-T; 10 min.
* T asks Ss to open their books at the first page of the unit and describe the
photograph. They should discuss who the person is, where he is and what he is
wearing. T asks Ss how they would feel if they were about to face this man in
the court.
* T explains that the extracts are all things said in court cases and all but one
contains a silly question.
* Ss read the extracts loudly, and decide which one does not contain a silly
question.
* Whole class. Ss give their opinions on which extract they found the most
amusing.
* T helps when necessary.
Activity 3. Putting the words under one of the given headings (In the
courtroom, Ex. 1, p. 80)
Aim: learning new words and practising vocabulary
Procedure:
PW; 13 min.
* T reads the headings and the words with the class and makes sure everyone
understands them. Ss then work in pairs to put the words and phrases in the
box under the correct headings.

* Ss present their answers.


* T helps when necessary.
Activity 4. Using words and phrases in 1 to complete the sentences (In the
courtroom, Ex. 3, p. 81)
Aim: practising the new words
Procedure:
PW; 10 min.
* Working in pairs, Ss complete the gaps with words and phrases from 1.
* T checks answers with the class.
* T helps when necessary.
Activity 5. Listening (In the courtroom, Ex. 5, p. 81)
Aim: improving listening ability
Procedure:
* T plays the recording.
* Ss listen and identify the crimes described.
* T checks answers with the class.

Activity 6. Worksheet. Matching the words with the definitions


Aim: Checking if Ss have understood the meaning of the new words
Procedure:
IW; 5 min.
* Ss match words with the definitions.
* T checks answers with the class.
Activity 7. Homework. (In the courtroom, Ex. 2, p. 80)
Aim: Enriching Ssvocabulary
Procedure:
T-ST; 2 min
* T tells Ss that for the next class they will have to add another word or phrase
to the categories in 1, p. 80: crimes, punishments, people, legal processes.
