THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Background of the Study
Construction business is considered to be one of todays
prime sources of employment.

In spite of being utmost,

construction is known to be included in the most dangerous

occupation because to its dynamic genre and outside work
operations. Construction work is very risky with regards to the
workers safety due to the complexity of the work itself. Because it
involves heights and hazards there is a great possibility that
accidents may occur any time.
In India building collapses have become an almost common
occurrence in the country. India has seen frequent building
collapses, many blamed on lax safety and substandard materials.
The need for better regulation of construction in the country is a
lack of construction codes, leading to lax safety, is one reason for
frequent collapses of buildings and other infrastructure projects in
India. Corruption is also a factor, because in many cases, changes
to the building's structure such as adding extra floors, or breaking

down walls, which might make it vulnerable. >>SOURCE? WAS

In China, work safety is a big problem, where regulations
are routinely ignored. The use of poor quality construction
materials, minimal worker training, the lack of basic safety
measures and poor project management have all played a part in
construction site accidents in China. Construction industry
accidents are the number of elderly workers involved. The
majority of workers had no training prior to embarking on the

For the past decade, the Philippines has seen a
significant rise in construction-related injuries, and even deaths.
High-rise condominiums are being constructed all over the
country at a staggering rate and these construction sites have
become increasingly dangerous for workers. >>SOURCE? On
January 27, 2011 construction workers who were working on the
Eton Property at the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Gallardo Street
and

were

employees

of

ARLO

Aluminum,

glass

contractor/installer of the condominium project, were riding a

gondola on their way to the down from their break. The capacity
of the gondola is limited to two to three persons but all of them

took it simultaneously. The cable of the gondola snapped on the

32nd floor causing the workers to fall all the way to the 7th floor.
They were all rushed to the Ospital ng Makati but 10 of them
were declared dead on arrival. One fortunately survived the fall.

Construction site accident injuries are often caused by
employer negligence, whether they are negligent in safety
training or negligent in observing practices on the site, workers
can get injured simply because the people in charge dont do
their jobs properly and dont pay close enough attention. >>

Injuries also occur due to co-worker negligence. If a coworker is tired or overworked, or if they get lazy and dont
observe proper safety protocol, injuries can occur because a coworker misuses machinery, drops materials, spills fluids, etc.

In view of the accidents happened in the field of building
construction in Tagum City, Davao del Norte >>>??? ANY

which aims to identify the origin, tendencies and all major

elements that will lead to the possible causes of the said

catastrophe. In addition, the researchers specifically analysed the
current state of utilization of safety hazards and protection
among building construction companies.

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to determine the
safety of the construction worker and investigate the
various causes of accidents in building construction sites.
1. What are the primary causes of construction worker
accidents in Tagum City?
2. What are the safety measures that construction industry in
Tagum City should practice?
3. Is there a related accidents that includes the elderly
workers?
