Getting Started
PC Software Installation

The SMT - 300 application requires approximately 25 MB of hard disc space on the target machine. The system requirements are
Windows 98 or better, at least 128 MB of RAM and a Pentium II processor at 200 MHz. The application is best viewed in screen
resolution 1024 X 768.
The application itself requires a LabVIEW 7.0 runtime system, which will be installed automatically by the application installer
program setup.exe, if not already present on the target system.

Installation Procedure
If the SMT-300 PC software is being upgraded to a newer version it is best to first remove the older version as described in section
Un-install Procedure

1. Insert the accompanying CD into an appropriate CD drive on the target PC

2. Click on the SMT-300 button in the self-extracted SMT-300 installation screen
3. Follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard. Click Finish when done.

NOTE: After installation of the application on your computer you should have one new program group in your Start menu which is
called “SMT - 300” and contains an icon to start the application as well as a link to the PDF version of this Manual.

Un-install Procedure
If the software needs to be removed from the hard disk use the following procedure.
Click on the Start menu in the lower left corner of your PC screen
Select Control Panel / Add and Remove Programs
Highlight the SMT-300 icon and click Remove

Running the program

From the Windows Start menu / Programs / SMT-300 click on the SMT-300 icon to start the program.
The SMT-300 software offers Multi Language support. If this is the first time the program is being run 300 application requires the
default language to be selected.
The language file must be available in C:\Programe Files\SMT-300\Language Support\ (for example "Dutch.txt") for the language to
be supported.

Battery charging
The internal battery is a maintenance free Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) type and is capable of over 1000 charge cycles. The
SMT-300 can be used whilst charging the battery which can be achieved through use of the included 110 – 230 VAC mains
cable or the 12-30 VDC charger / adaptor. When FastCharge is selected the SMT-300 can be recharged and ready for use in
as little as two hours. The charge status LED indicates the following:
• Orange – FastCharge charging mode active
• Green – FastCharge complete; SMT-300 continues to charge in trickle mode
• Red – Charging suspended due to a high battery temperature and will automatically resume when the temperature has
returned to a safe level.

The battery could be destroyed if it is recharged using an incorrect type of charging unit. To ensure maximum performance
from the battery the following guidelines should always be followed:
• Only use the specified charging adaptor
• Never short circuit the battery terminals
• If possible avoid charging battery pack at extreme ambient temperatures
• Although NIMH batteries are not sensitive to being left in a discharged state it is best to charge the SMT-300 at regular
intervals when the unit is in storage

Note: New NiMH batteries require 5 to 10 charge / discharge cycles before they achieve full capacity.

SMT-300 Layout
The SMT-300 consists of a single integrated unit with an internal battery pack. Operation is still possible whilst charging the
onboard battery. While using the SMT-300 when connected to the charger the battery will be automatically charging as
required.

Switching on the SMT-300

To power up the SMT-300 simply push (tap) the ENTER/START key once. The unit will beep to
acknowledge the power up request. The start up screen will be displayed while the system is going
through a set of Power On Self Tests (POST). This is a functional test of the CPU and its associated
hardware.

After approximately 10 seconds the Username screen will appear. Enter the name of the user and
accept by pressing the start/enter button once. Or edit the user name using the mode key to switch
between Caps/Small case/Numeric

The unit is now ready for operation. If this is the first time the unit is being used it will need to be setup
for the particular string to be tested. All settings are stored in non-volatile memory and are retained even
when the power is off.
SENSOR
Post Mortem on Powering up
If the SMT-300 was last shutdown with one of the following errors, a post mortem screen is
displayed on the next power up sequence
to alert the operator.

Navigating around the screens

The SMT-300 operates on a simple menu system. There are two ways to access the sub-menus:

CURSOR CONTROL Use the cursor keys to move to the required sub-menu. Once the cursor is
next to the selected menu press the ENTER/START key to select the sub-menu.

DIRECT CONTROL Press the number corresponding to the desired sub-menu on the numeric
keypad. This will take you directly to the required menu.
SENSOR
Switching off the SMT-300

To shut down the SMT-300 return to the main menu then select 0. This will begin the shut down sequence. SMT-300 configuration
file is saved and then the Log Off delay count begins (set in menu item [2-2-1]). During this time period the shut down sequence
can be aborted by hitting the start/enter key. Once the count down timer expires the SMT-300 will be safely shut down.
If left unattended, the SMT-300 will shut down automatically after a user set delay [2-2-4] or if the battery voltage should drop below
7.0 volts.

SMT-300 Hard System Reset

In the rare case that the SMT-300 locks up or cannot be shut down reset the tester by shorting pin ‘C’ to either pin ‘A’ or ‘B’ on the
power port of the SMT-300. .

SENSOR
Battery level
The internal NiMH battery in the SMT-300 will power the tester for over 20 hours of continuous operation and can be recharged in
as little as 2 hours. Battery charge condition is continually monitored and displayed as a bar graph indicator, which is visible in all
screens (thick line at the bottom, just above the date and time). This provides the user with a guide of the remaining operational
time of the SMT-300.
