9. A single unequal angle 100 x 75 x 6 mm is connected to a 10 mm thick gusset
plate at the ends with six 16mm diameter bolts to transfer tension. Determine the
deign tensile strength of the angle assuming that the yield and ultimate stress of
steel used are 250 MPa and 410 MPa. Assuming that the shorter leg is connected
to gusset plate.
10. A tension member consists of two angles 90 x 90x 8 mm bolted to 10 mm gusset,
on either side of gusset plate using single row of bolts and tack bolted. Determine
the tensile capacity of the member. what will be the capacity if the angles are
connected on the same side of the gusset plate and tack bolted? what is the effect
on tensile strength if the members are not tack bolted? Take yield stress of the
steel as 250 MPa and ultimate stress 410 MPa.
11. A tension member in roof truss is subjected to factored tensile load of 300 KN.
Design the member using two angles on both side of gusset plate. assume f y=250
MPa and 20 mm diameter bolts.
12. Design a tension member to carry a factored load of 230 KN. use single unequal
angle with 4 mm fillet weld for the connection to G.P. Length of member is 3.0
m. Take fy=250 MPa and fu= 410 MPa.
13. An equal angle section 80 x 80x 6 mm is connected to G.P. 8 mm thick using 420 diameter bolts to transfer tensile force. Determine tensile strength of the angle.
Assume steel grade Fe 410.
14. A flat size of 160 mm x 10 mm is used as a tension member in a roof truss. It can
be connected to the gusset plate by two different arrangements of bolts. Calculate
the maximum tension the flat can carry in both cases if the diameter of the bolt is
16 mm. Assume yield stress of 250 N/mm2 and ultimate stress of 410 N/mm2.

15. A tension member consists of two angles 90 x 90 x 8 mm bolted to 10 mm gusset


one on each side using single rows of bolt and tack bolted. Determine the
maximum load that the member can carry. What will be the load carrying
capacity if the angles are connected on the same side of gusset? Take the gauge
distance equal to 50 mm and area of angle = 1379 mm2.

4. Enlist different type of bolted joints and explain it with neat sketch.

6. Two plates 120 x 10 mm and 120 x 16 mm are connected by lap joint to resist a
tensile load of 120 KN. Design a lap joint using M 16 bolts of grade 4.6 and
grade 410 plates.
7. Design the lap joint between plates of sizes 100 x 16 mm thick and 100 x 10 mm
thick so as to transmit a factored load of 100 KN using single row of bolts of
grade 4.6 and grade 410.
8. A single bolted double cover butt joint is used to connect two plate 8 mm thick as
shown in fig.. Assume 20 mm bolts at 50 mm pitch. Calculate the efficiency of
the joint.

9. A load of 50 KN is placed on the bracket at a distance 150 mm from the c.g. of


the bolt group. The bracket is connected by 4 -20 dia. 4.6 grade of bolts. Find the
maximum stress in the bolt.

7. A leg of transmission line tower consists of ISA 200 x 200 x 18 mm of 3 m
height.
Calculate the compressive strength of the member considering the load is applied
concentrically. Ends of the member are pinned. Take fy=250 MPa for steel.
8. Calculate the compressive strength of a single angle strut ISA 100 x 75 x 10 mm
with centre length of 1.5 m . Angle is loaded through one leg and ends are fixed.
Consider 1 bolt at the each end. Take fy=250 MPa.
9. A double angle discontinuous strut consists of 2-ISA 80 x 80 x 6 mm placed on
the same side of gusset plate and tack bolted. The length of the member is 3 m,
between the intersections. Determine the compression capacity of the member.
Assume grade Fe 410 steel with fy=250 MPa. strut is hinged at both ends.
10. A single ISA 100 x 65 x 6 mm is used as a single angle strut with c/c length 1.8
m. It is loaded through one leg and ends are fixed. Find out compressive strength
of strut, considering one bolt at each end. Take fy=250 MPa.
11. Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored load of 65 KN.
Assume that the distance between its joints is 2.5 m. Use fy=250 MPa.
12. Determine the design axial compressive load on the column section ISLB 500 @
0.75KN/m having length 5.0 m and pinned at the ends. Take f y=250 MPa and
E= 2 x 105 N/mm2.

13. Design a column to carry an axial factored load of 1200 KN. The actual length of
column is 6 m with both ends effectively held in position and restrained against
rotation. Select two channels back to back. Assume that the column is laced and
fy=250 MPa.
14. Determine the design axial compressive load on the column section ISMB 400 @
61.6 Kg/m having length 4.5 m between the intersection and pinned at the ends.
Take fy=250 MPa.
15. Design a column to carry an axial load of 750 KN. The column has actual length
5.5 m with respect to Z-axis and 3.5 m with respect to y-axis. Use Fe 410 grade
steel.

7. Design a simply supported beam of span 7m carrying R.C.C. slab capable of
providing lateral restraint to the top compression flange. The beam is subjected
to total U.D.L. of 100 KN dead load excluding self weight plus 150 KN
imposed load. In addition , the beam carries a point load at mid span made up of
50 KN dead load and 50 KN imposed load.
8. In a factory building steel beams are provided at 3 m c/c. The effective span of
beam is 8m. The RCC floor slab is 120 mm thick. It has superimposed load of 4
KN/m2. Assume weight of RCC as 25 KN/m3 and weight of floor finish as 24
KN/m3. Design the steel beam. Make necessary checks.
9. Design a simply supported beam of span 5m carrying working load of dead
load 20 KN/m and imposed load 15 KN/m/. Assume that the compression
flange of the beam is laterally restrained throughout.
10. Design a simply supported beam of span 5m subjected to working DL = 25
KN/m and LL = 15 KN/m. The beam is laterally unrestrained. Use Fe 410 grade
steel.
11. Design a simply supported beam of span 6m, laterally unrestrained. The beam
carries a working DL= 15 KN/m and LL= 10 KN/m. Use Fe 410 grade of steel.
The beam is laterally restrained by a cross beam framing at mid span.

4. Design a single lacing system for a column composed of 2 ISMC 350 with back
to back spacing 220 mm. Axial load on column is 1800 KN. The effective
length of column is 6.0 m.
5. Design a double lacing system for a column compressed of 2 ISMC 250 with
back to back spacing 160 mm. Axial load on column is 1500 KN. The length of
column is 5 m and hinged at ends.
6. Design suitable slab base for column ISHB 300 @ 63 kg/m carrying axial load
of 2700 KN. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 KN/m 2 and grade of
concrete is M20. Draw two views of your design.
7. Design suitable slab base for built up column 2 ISMC 250 with back to back
spacing 160 mm. Axial load on column is 1500 KN. The S.B.C. of soil is 180
KN/m2 and concrete grade is M15.

3. A column in a building frame is subjected to the following loads:
Factored axial load = 500 KN
Factored moment about z-z axis: at top = 27 KN.m
at bottom = 45 KN.m (same nature as at top).
Length of column is 4 m , hinged at top and fixed at bottom. Design suitable
beam- column.

1. Design a short column square in section to axial load of 2000 KN. The materials
are using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415.
2. Find load carrying capacity of R.C.C column 300mm x300mm in section and
reinforced with 8 numbers of 16mm thick bars.Consider f ck=20 N/mm2 and
fy=415N/mm2.
3. Design a short circular column subjected to an axial load 1200KN. Column has
helical reinforcement and dia of the column is restricted to 500mm.
4. A rectangular column 300mm X 500mm is reinforced with 8 numbers of
longitudinal bars, (4-25 dia) and (4-20 dia) effective length of column is 3.6m.
design for lateral tie of above column. Also calculate load carrying capacity for
above column using M20 and Fe 415 grade. Check the above column for
minimum eccentricity.
5. Design a circular column for a following data. Check for minimum eccentricity
for short or long column. Load= 2000KN, L=3m, Le= 3m, M20, Fe415.

ASSIGNMENT-11 DEVELOPMENT LENGTH AND SHEAR


REINFORCEMENT
1. A Tee beam section having 230 mm width of web and 460 mm effective depth
is reinforced with 5 numbers of 16mm dia bars at tension reinforcement which
continue for a distance greater than effective depth. The section is subjected to a
factored shear of 52.5KN.
2.

Vu= 90KN, b=230mm, d=460mm, fck= 20N/mm2. Find nominal shear, shear
reinforcement and check for spacing.

3. Determine shear capacity for following cases:


(a) Size of Tee beam 230mm X 500mm effective depth reinforced with 116 mm
dia bars at tension reinforcement and 6mm dia and 130mm centre to centre two
legged stirrups. Use M20 for concrete and mild steel bar.
(b) Size of beam 230mm X 720mm effective depth reinforced with 5 nos. of
16mm dia (3-straight + 2-bentup at 45 degree) with 8mm dia 300mm c/c two
legged stirrups. Use M20 grade of concrete and mild steel bar.

ASSIGNMENT-12 SINGLY REINFORCED BEAM


1. A rectangular cantilever beam of size 230mm X 500mm effective depth is
subjected to bending moment of 80KN.m at working loads. Find steel area
required. The materials are M20 grade concrete and Fe415 for steel.
2. simply supported rectangular beam of 8m span carries a udl of 23KN.m
inclusive of its self weight. Determine reinforcement for flexure. The materials
are M25 and Fe415.
3. A singly reinforced rectangular beam 5m span is simply supported and carries a
characteristic load of 18KN/m and live load 12KN/m in addition to its self
weight. Design the beam for flexure at mid span. Also find out the section in the
span where half the reinforcement can be curtailed theoretically. The materials
are M20 and Fe415.
4. Given b=250mm, d=500mm, fck=20N/mm2, fy=415N/mm2.
(a) Compute depth of neutral axis for factored Mo of 150KN.m.
(b) Compute moment capacity when neutral axis is 0.36d.

1. Find factor moment resistance of a beam 230mm wide and 460mm effective
depth reinforced with 2 nos of 16mm diameter as compression reinforcement at

The materials are M20 grade of concrete and mild steel bars.
2. Find factor moment resistance of a beam 300mm wide and 450mm effective
depth reinforced with 2 nos of 20mm diameter as compression reinforcement at

and simply supported on 6m span. The characteristics of load support by
120mm thick slab are(6+4)KN/m2 being a combined dead load and live load
respectively in addition to the load on the slab and the intermediate beam
support of a war load 12KN/m and in self weight. Design beam for flexure. The
materials are M20 and Fe415.
