EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
TSCS submarine cable system links Tanjung Batu on Tarakan Island to Tanah Kuning
on Tanjung Selor Timur, as shown in following figure. The proposed TSCS cable is
88.019 km in length running parallel to the shore line of east Kalimantan.
N
The Proposed route
This report presents the results obtained during the inshore survey for the reroute
segment between Tanjung Batu BMH, at 3 14.401' N, 117 38.621' E (KP0.0), and
A/C 05, at 3 14.799' N, 117 42.190' E (KP6.8), as shown in following figure. This
report comprises a descriptive text and charts showing the seafloor geology and
bathymetry along the reroute segment, together with appendices of supporting
information.
Previous RPL
Survey Report
TSCS Reroute
The inshore survey using the KM Rejeki Baru was conducted from 14th November to
20th November 2012. As the water depth along the entire route is very shallow, all
survey activities were carried out during day light hours. The following table presents
the breakdown of the operations performed.
The following table summarises the operations performed for the inshore marine
survey.
Landfall/Vessel
Tanjung Batu
Landfall
Pre survey RPL, SBCS TSCS_RPL_081112 Tarakan IDR.xls was provided by PT BNP
before the start of the survey and it is used to design the survey operations. All KP
distances, offset values and points on line are referenced to this RPL.
The reroute section of TSCS cable system crosses no in-service/out of service cables
and no oil/gas pipelines.
The reroute section of TSCS cable system passes through 2 hydrocarbon concession
blocks. Consultation with the concession holders should be sought to reduce the
threat from future exploration or production.
Fishing activity was low to moderate during the survey, with boats and fishing buoys
observed. Scattered to numerous trawl scars on seabed were observed.
The shipping activities are low during the reroute survey. Passenger boats and tug
boat with coal barge were observed.
7 survey days were worked by the inshore survey team and 8 survey days were
worked by the land topographic team for Tanjung Batu Landfall without any
reportable incident.

The ability of acoustic waves to travel through the
subsurface.
A subsurface that causes the velocity of seismic waves to
change.
The area immediately surrounding the Beach Manhole location
extending down to the LWM Landing Point (Shoreline). This is
also referred to as the onshore area.
A stratified or layered feature associated with sedimentary
rocks and/or loose sediments.
Any oscillatory topographic deviations from a flat bed
produced by fluid movement including wave and current
activity, generally in a sandy domain.
The solid rock lying beneath superficial material such as
gravels or soils.
A separated rock mass larger than a cobble, having a
diameter greater than 200 mm. It is rounded in form or
shaped by abrasion.
Required target burial depth is 4.0m from the BMH (Pantai
Amal) to BMH (Tanah Kuning)
A mineral type containing the carbonate radical (CO3).
A level so low that the tide will not frequently fall below it.
British Hydrographic Office interprets it as the approximate
level of Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT).
A complex mineral assemblage with particle size <0.002 mm
Sediment composed mainly sand (may include gravel).
ix
Terminology
Definition
Detrital sediment with particle size between 60mm and
Cobble
200mm diameter.
Sediments, typically clay and/or silt that resist separation due
Cohesive sediment
to nature of bonds between fine grained particles.
Lumps or nodules found in loose sediment, rounded or
Concretion
irregular in shape, usually harder than surrounding medium.
A gently sloping, shallow-water platform extending from the
coast to a point where there begins a comparatively sharp
Continental Shelf
descent down the continental slope to the Abyssal floor.
Reef comprising hard material composed predominantly of
Coral reef
corals and calcareous algae.
Rounded boulder, occurring individually or in piles at the
ground surface, or in exposed sections. It results from an
initial phase of subsurface chemical weathering, of a jointCorestone
bounded block, followed or accompanied by surface erosion
that exposes the corestone.
Sonar contacts attributed to human activity. Generally
Debris
angular and distant from areas of rock outcrop and high
energy environments.
Deep water areas
Water depths greater than 1000 metres.
Process by which chemical and physical properties of soils
Diagenesis
change
A high continuous cliff or long, steep slope situated between a
Escarpment
lower, more gently inclined surface and a higher surface.
Fine sediment
Sediment composed mainly of silt and clay.
A fish-aggregating device comprising a sinker/weight with
FAD
lines and attached buoys, possibly palm fronds designed to
attract fish.
Gas seepage
Escape of fluids (gas) from the seabed.
An unconsolidated accumulation consisting of particles larger
Gravel
than sand (diameter 2 mm 60mm).
Loose sediment covering the seafloor partially affected by
Hardened seafloor
diagenetic processes that produce a hard surface (with
(Hardpan)
variable geotechnical properties).
Nominally those waters shallower than 15m or shallower than
Inshore Water Areas
the safe working limit of the primary survey vessel.
Induration
Process where soft sediment becomes hard rock
This is the lowest level to which sea level can be predicted to
fall under normal meteorological conditions and under any
combination of astronomical conditions. LAT is not an
LAT
extreme level, as meteorological conditions can cause a lower
level: the level under these conditions is known as a storm
surge or negative surge.
Loose sediment
Not cemented sediment, either cohesive or not.
Undulations produced by fluid movement (waves and
Megaripples
currents) over sediments, generally with of 0.5m to 25m.
Offshore Water Areas Water depths from 20 metres to maximum water depths
Term not used (too subjective superseded by gravel &

A detrital particle, finer than very fine sand and coarser than
clay, in the range of 0.004 mm to 0.062 mm.
Water depths from 15 metres to 1000 metres.
The slipping or sliding down of a mass of sediment relatively
soon after its deposition in a sub-aqueous slope.
Where a rock/basement lies within the project and area

1.2
Purpose
PT BNP and PT EGS were contracted by PT BNP to supply topographic, hydrographic,
geophysical and geotechnical survey services to provide enough information for PT
Telkom Indonesia to use in the engineering, construction and subsequent
maintenance of the TSCS system. EGS understood that the primary objective of the
cable route survey activities was to identify hazards and thereby allow PT Telkom
Indonesia to ascertain a secure, technically and economically viable route for the
system and to enable exact cable lengths, cable design and installation parameters
to be defined for the projected life of the system.
1.3
Regional Setting
TSCS cable links Tanjung Batu on Tarakan Island to Tanah Kuning on East Kalimantan
Island in Indonesia.
Tarakan is an island off the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is one of the
major cities in eastern Borneo. It is located at 3 180N, 117 380. The island
occupies an area of 117 square miles (300 km2).
Survey Report
TSCS Reroute
1-2
Tarakan had a population of 178,111 in 2008. It is famous for oil production. Tarakan
oil field produced a light, sour crude oil with an unusually low pour point. The city
was once a leading oil producer in Dutch East Indies; however, now oil comprises only
6% of the Tarakan economy. The economy is now dominated by fisheries and forest
products.

A baseline was established by GcGPS and was used as the reference points for all
horizontal control. Description sheets for these three control points are included in
Appendix D1.
2.2.2
Vertical Datum
The vertical datum for this project is Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT).

==============================
CD/LAT
At the Tanjung Batu Landfall, a water-level recorder was installed at Tanjung Batu
jetty. The Mean Sea Level (MSL) was calculated from values logged at the water level
recorder over the entire survey period, from 14th November 2012 to 20th November
2012. The LAT reference level was then established by referring to the relationship
given in the following diagram. The established LAT was finally transferred to the
landing site and used during the land topographic survey. A vertical datum
relationship diagram is show in Figure 5.

SURVEY RESULTS
4.1
Introduction
The following narrative summarises the topography, bathymetry and geology of the
TSCS reroute section. Examples of the survey records are provided to show
distinctive features.
The British Standards BS 5930 (1.3) were used to describe sediment samples and
seabed classification. A summary of the descriptive terms and definitions used is
provided as Appendix B1 of this report.
4.2
Samples
23 Beach Probes and 30 Diver Probes and 6 Grab Samples were conducted during the
reroute survey. The summary tables and samples logs are presented in Appendix B2
of this report.
4.3
Sonar Contacts
One sonar contact TSCS-TJB-SC001 was identified at 3 14.823N, 117 41.893E
(KP6.2), 44m N of the route. It was interpreted as debris. The summary tables logs
are presented in Appendix C of this report.
4.4
Magnetometer Contacts
Although the cable has been rerouted outside of the mine area, for safety reasons, a
marine magnetometer survey was conducted along with marine geophysical survey.
No magnetic contact was mapped within the survey limit. Conversely, variations of
field magnetic intensity between 8nT and 110nT were observed along KP 2.2 to KP
2.7. These variations are caused by rapid changes of seabed bathymetry and
morphology of the seabed (CORAL/HARDGROUND).

Marine Survey
The marine geophysical survey started from diver survey Hand Over Point (HOP) at 3
14.607N, 117 39.401E (KP1.5) to 3 14.799n, 117 42.190E (KP6.8).
From HOP to 3 14.803n, 117 40.196E (KP3.1), the route proceeds north east
easterly over a seabed of CORAL/HARDGROUND with intermittent veneer covers of
very loose gravelly silty SAND and very soft slightly gravelly sandy SILT. This was
confirmed by 1 diver probe and 2 grab samples conducted in this area, namely TSCSTJB-DP030, TSCS-TJB-GS001 and TSCS-TJB-GS002. A gentle to moderate bathymetry
break with average slope of 5 and seafloor deepens from 6m to 16m in 100m, is
observed near the end of the CORAL/HARDGROUND area, in the vicinity of 3
14.804n, 117 39.983E (KP2.7), as shown in the following Figure 13. Target burial
depth of 4m may not be achievable is CORAL/HARDGROUND area.

From 3 14.803n, 117 40.196E (KP3.1) to 3 14.799n, 117 42.190E (KP6.8), the
route continues in eastward direction, over a very gentle to gentle gradient seabed
with more than 4m of very soft silty CLAY, as shown in Figure 16 and Figure 17. This
was confirmed by 4 grab samples conducted in this area, namely TSCS-TJB-GS003,
TSCS-TJB-GS004, TSCS-TJB-GS005 and TSCS-TJB-GS006. Scattered to numerous trawl
scars were observed from the side scan sonar record indicating low to moderate
fishing activity in the reroute section, as shown in Figure 15. One sonar contact TSCSTJB-SC001 was identified at 3 14.823N, 117 41.893E (KP6.2), 44m N of the route.
It was interpreted as debris. The proposed route Exit Tarakan Offshore Providence
and Enter Nunukan Medoc Energi at 3 14.801' N, 117 41.231' E (KP5.0). Target
burial is achievable in this section.
