Dream becoming real

SOUTH-west cancer specialists are getting excited.

After years of lobbying
government and fundraising
by the Peters Project community group, the opening
of the $30 million South West
Regional Cancer Centre is
drawing closer.
Cancer specialists Terri
Hayes and Ian Holland from
South West Oncology and
Tracie Gleisner, who will be
the centres chief radiation
oncologist, got an inside look
on Tuesday at where they
will be working.
Dr Hayes praised the massive community effort led
by volunteer Vicki Jellie that
had turned the dream of a regional integrated cancer care
into a reality.
She said South West Oncology, which also includes
oncologist Oliver Klein who
works part-time in Warrnambool, would next year
shift from St John of Gods
Warrnambool hospital to the
new centre in Ryot Street.
It will provide chemotherapy and new therapies such
as targeted therapies and immunotherapy as well as work
closely with radiotherapy
where joint treatments were
involved.
Up until now chemotherapy has been given in Geelong, Dr Hayes said.
Now we can do it all here,
Dr Hayes said.

will also relocate its Day Oncology ward and chemotherapy pharmacy to the centres
first floor where patients will
have picturesque sea views.
Epworth Hospital, which
will deliver the public radiotherapy service at the new
centre, recently announced
that Dr Gleisner will be the
centres chief radiation oncologist. She is presently the
site director at Peter Macs
radiation service in Bendigo.
Dr Gleisner will start in
the role in March next year
with the centre expected to
receive its first intake of patients a few months later.
Radiotherapy services will
be located on the ground
floor of the three-storey
building.
They will be provided from
a bunker room made from
thick concrete and steel plate
that will house a linear accelerator.
A second bunker has also
been built to cater for expansion.
The ground floor of the
building will include the
Peters Project Community
Support Centre where patients and their families can
relax in a lounge and kitchen.
The ground floor will also
be graced with a sculpture by
local artist David Higgins.
Epworths director of commissioning Paul Fenton said
the centre was on track to
open on August 1.

ILLOWA motocross rider

Corey Hawkes remains in
a critical condition in Royal
Adelaide Hospital.
A hospital spokesman said
onTuesday Mr Hawkes was
in the hospitals intensive
care unit.
Mr Hawkes, 19, received a
serious head injury when
he fell from his motorcycle
when competing in a
motocross event on Friday
afternoon at the Millicent
show in South Australias
south-east.
He is a seasoned motocross
competitor and is wellknown in the local motocross community.
