Smyrna Primary Kindergarten

Learning Goals 2nd Nine Weeks


These are the standards that will be taught in class .Some standards will be taught throughout the course of the school year. This follows the
Rutherford County curriculum guide for kindergarten .

Reading: Literature and Informational Text


With prompting and support
Retell familiar stories with key details
Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text
Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story
Identify characters, settings and major events in a story
Describe the connection between two individuals, events or
ideas in a text
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Actively engage in groups reading activities
Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text
Name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role
of each
Recognize different types of texts (storybooks, poems)
Identify the front cover, back cover and title page of a book
support, identify basic similarities in and differences between
two texts on the same topic (illustrations, descriptions etc)

Reading: Foundational Skills:


Recognize that spoken words are represented by a specific
sequence of letters
Count, produce, blend and segment syllables in spoken words
Follow words from left to right and top to bottom
Understand that words are separated by spaces in print
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in
decoding words
Recognize and produce rhyming words
Associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings
(graphemes) for the five major vowels.
Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single syllable words
Read common high-frequency words by sight
Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding

Language:

Math:

Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the


pronoun I
Print many upper- and lower-case letters
Write a letter to letters for most consonant and
short vowel sounds
Spell simple words phonetically
Produce and expand complete sentences in
shared language activities
Use frequently occurring nouns and verbs
Use the most frequently occurring prepositions

Understand and use question words

Understand the relationship between numbers and


quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
Understand that each successive number name
refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Correctly name shapes regardless of their
orientations or overall size.
Understand addition as putting together and
adding to, and understand subtraction is taking
apart and taking from.
Solve addition and subtraction problems within 5.
Represent addition and subtraction with objects,
fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g.,
claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations,
expressions, or equations
Write numbers 0-20.
Count to answer "how many?" questions about as
many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular
array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a
scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20,
count out that many objects.
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such
as length or weight. Describe several measurable
attributes of a single object.

Writing:
Use a combination of drawing, dictating and
writing to tell about a single event in a story and
tell about the events in order
With support from adults, use information from
experiences to answer questions
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and
writing to compose an opinion piece of writing

Social Studies:
Science:
Know the different objects are visible in the day

is a round model of the earth
