Despite the weather it has been a busy time in our district.

As you will see below, the District Centre is going ahead apace.
The Snapper Point beach access has been re-opened with a newly
redesigned and built ramp.
The deadly Fun Run people had a very pleasing turn up despite the
inclement weather, for their second event and organisers are very
pleased with the results. (We managed to squeeze some pics in on p
20.) Our June General meeting was fairly well attended to hear
Kingston electoral candidates.

Speaking at the 2016 Papal Palm Sunday Mass

How does a local Port Willunga lad go from an upringing
in non-Catholic school, family and church life, to being a
speaker in the Vatican with the Pope?
Put like that, even his family don't quite know. But Sam
Evans has always been a bit of a surprise packet. From
his earliest days at the Southern Vales Christian
Community School Sam was noted as a budding artist - at
the frustration of his teachers - because he felt he could
concentrate better if he doodled.
He became a professional artist on leaving school and
doors kept opening for him throughout Adelaide and
beyond - even to Europe. He also showed some real talent
at a number of sports, and for a time specialised in
aerosol art. He co-starred in a movie called "Graffiti!"
promoted by the local MP, and was the face of a youth art
promotion on the video of the free Adelaide city bus.
At this year's Palm Sunday Papal Mass - a beautiful
sunny day in Rome: Pope Francis spoke, the cardinals
and crowd settled quietly into their seats, and Sam's voice
boomed over the near-capacity crowd of 80,000 in St.
Peter's Square; as the television cameras zero'd in on him
to complete the reading of Isaiah 50:4-7.
Everyone has experiences, and your unique story of

events in your faith journey could be a real
encouragement and help to others. You don't have to be a
Shakespeare.
His parents and friends were dumbfounded! So how did

he do it? The story line is that he took an interest in a
Catholic lass: then independently, in her religion; felt led
to study philosophy and theology at Notre Dame
university in Sydney; and then to attend a 9-month global
ESM training formation for under 30-year-olds in Rome.
This took him to Northern Ireland, France, USA, Belgium
and next, Poland. Somewhere in all that he was asked to
do the reading. Simple! That's how its done.
Let's get writing! Closing time is near; and prize winners

But Sam says why should we be surprised - if he was

following Jesus

acapella with many joyful songs. More than $460 was
raised as a result of the fundraiser.
Members of Aldinga Bay Bowling Club hosted a Devonshire Morning Tea in early May to fundraise and support
Zonta Club Noarlunga Southern Vales Breast Cancer
Cushion Project.
Over 40 guests including Councillor Hazel Wainwight
from City of Onkaparinga and Sandra Buttery and Jo
Wilson from Zonta (pictured below) enjoyed the
Generous sponsorship provided by Apia Insurance has
provided prize money for an Annual Winter Drawn Pairs
Competition which is being played by members over

We have had a very successful Willunga History Weekend with approx 50 people turning up to each of our three
advertised events.
June will be less busy apart from our usual opening times
and some group bookings.
In the Winter Season, we look forward to a new-look
exhibit and our Annual General Meeting We will also
follow on from the "Irish Girls"exhibit at the end of June
with a small exhibit of "Mourning Dress" in the Victorian
era following the interest the Strout Road Cemetery tour
with the Victorian mourners in attendance.
The Tragic Shore
The Star of Greece exhibit, which displays the story and
artifacts of the shipwreck, is a popular part of the
Courthouse Museum. Currently we are working towards
refreshing and expanding the current display to cover
other elements of our local maritime history, including
other shipwrecks. This new exhibition is expected to be
open to the public during this winter.
The Star of Greece was wrecked on Friday 13th July,
1888.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Annual General Meeting of the Willunga National
Trust will be held on August 21st, 2016.
This is an opportunity to find out about the work of your
local Branch of the National Trust of SA, we welcome
new interested people.
A guest speaker will address the meeting.

WOOD SMOKE BAD FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH
Who doesn't enjoy crowding around a fireplace when it is
cold outside? The heat and flames have a primitive
comfort that shield us from the miserable weather outside.
Unfortunately if your comforting wood heater or fireplace
emits wood smoke, it can cause irritation, distress and
illness for your neighbours, leading to bad feeling in the
community.
Research has found that wood smoke contains particles
with cancer causing and toxic agents. Wood smoke is
irritating for many people and a real hazard for those with
respiratory problems. But you do not need to throw out
your wood heater or block up your fireplace. You just
need to ensure that you manage your fireplace or wood
heater properly.
According to the Department of Environment, managing
your burning involves understanding the difference
between complete combustion and incomplete
combustion. Complete combustion involves:
dry seasoned firewood
a fire that is hot enough
sufficient air flow to provide enough oxygen for
combustion
sufficient mixing of air and the hot gas given off by
the fire
enough time for burning to be complete.
All of these factors mean little smoke. If any of these
factors is missing, then incomplete combustion occurs
and harmful wood smoke follows.
But you can reduce smoke emissions by following advice
from the Department of Environment. Some of their tips
include:
BURN only dry wood. When you buy green wet
wood, up to 40% of your bill is spent on water.
Buy your wood well in advance of winter and
store in a dry ventilated area.
BURN fires brightly. Smouldering fires cause smoke.
They are caused by wet or green wood, not
enough air or poor log loading. Use small logs, or
cut up your large logs, and leave enough space on
top of and throughout the fuel to enable flames to
properly develop. If you have your fire burning
overnight, make sure there is a flame.

wood heater, read the Hot Tips brochure. Search for
hot tips wood smoke to find the relevant website.

The Get Together Club

A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was
a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community
Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also
supported by Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and
Disability SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of
each month, at the Aldinga Life Care Hall, Pridham
Blvd, Aldinga Beach from 6.30 8.30pm.

Hold your horses! First steps first. Get your finance in

order. Know your budget and be in front of your
competitor with a pre-approval from a bank.
Before you can proceed anywhere, you need to have
money for two things:
Deposit
It is recommended that you should have at least 20% of
the purchase price as your deposit. If you borrow above
this, you are likely to be liable for Lenders Mortgage
Insurance which is an insurance paid by the borrower to
protect the lender for the risk they have taken to lend you
more than 80% of your purchase price. The premium of
this insurance is calculated as a percentage of the loan
amount and varies from lender to lender depending on
many elements. Cash Deposit can come from savings,
payouts, non-refundable gifts, or government subsidy
such as First Home Owners Grant.
Or a non-cash
deposit option in the form of Family Guarantee or equity
release.
Purchase costs
In addition to the deposit, you would also need about 5%
- 5.5% of your purchase price to cover purchase costs.
The majority of purchase costs are related to the states
stamp duty, plus other costs such as loan application fee,
conveyancer and pest & building inspection.
In summary, if Family Guarantee is not an option for you,
it is recommended that you have around 25.3% to 25.5%
of purchase price saved. It is not the end of the world if
you dont. There are lenders out there who are willing to
lend up to 97% without a huge cost of Lenders Mortgage
Insurance. A mortgage broker can help you find the right
lender for the deposit you have and discuss other noncash deposit options such as Family Guarantee or equity
release from an existing home.
Spring is normally the time when house markets are
blooming. Winter is as good time as any to find and buy
your dream house. You will have less competitors, and
the vendor knows you are serious buyer.

repertoire of the a capella singing of the
group for the enjoyment of a large audience
from markets, the McLaren Vale Festival, the
Eco Village celebrations to the Gala
performance at STARS .
The female choir sings about food, wine, love,
people and places and the seasons.
The choir meets at Waverley Homestead, St
Peters Terrace, Willunga. A happy and warm
historic venue for our practices on Monday
night at 7.30 pm. Ample parking is available
