Peterbilt SmartNav
Software Update Procedure
Update Notes:
1. This procedure applies to ESA Version 3.5.0.312 or later.
2. Make sure ESA updates have been downloaded, and ESA has been
closed and restarted before updating a SmartNav unit.
3. Interrupting the flashing process may corrupt SmartNav Software.
4. The current version of ESA (4.3.0.69) is compatible with Windows XP
Professional (32 bit), Windows Vista Business (32 bit) and Windows 7
Professional (32 or 64 bit).
5. Many SmartNav units can be flashed using a properly prepared name
brand USB pen drive. Peterbilt recommends Lexar brand pen drives.
6. USB pen drives used for this update must be FAT32 file format.
(Confirm by checking Properties / General / File System on the pen drive.)

Caution: Use of inexpensive or generic pen drives to

perform a SmartNav software update may result in a
failure of the flash process. See page 13 for instructions
to recover from a failed software flash. Be sure that pen
drives used to flash SmartNav are:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Properly formatted (FAT32)

Name brand (Lexar or equal)
Free from viruses
Properly prepared using ESA

Step 7

Pen Drive Update Steps Continued:

8. With a successful update, the display will show, Update Successful! Remove the
USB Pen Drive at this step.
Important Note: When this screen appears you may be prompted that you
only have 10 seconds to remove the USB pen drive before the flashing
process starts again. Do NOT remove the pen drive during the flashing
process. Removing the USB drive prematurely may corrupt device software.

Step 8
9.

The unit may reboot to a screen with a black background as shown below, and will
indicate UPDATE IN PROGRESS. This means the unit is performing an internal
update. Once complete, the system will automatically reboot to the home screen
with a default radio station of 87.7 FM showing in the bottom bar. Please note that
some user pre-sets, including radio station settings, will be set to factory default.
This inconvenience will be corrected with a future software update.

Step 9
10. The software update is complete.

Note: See page 13 for instructions to manage a flash failure.

Recovering from a Failed SmartNav Software Flash:

If any of these 3 images are displayed during a
software update, the flash process has failed.
Images 1 and 2 occur with a bad pen drive, or when
a pen drive is removed before the flash procedure is
complete. Before pursuing technical assistance, do
the following to recover the system.
1. Re-flash with a different pen drive. Inserting a new
pen drive should force an automatic re-boot.
2. If inserting the new pen drive does not force an
automatic re-boot, leave the pen drive in the head
unit and turn the unit off and on to re-start.

Image 1

Note: If using a new pen drive to re-flash,

confirm the pen drive is:
1. Properly formatted (FAT32)
2. Name brand (Lexar or equal)
3. Free from viruses
4. Properly prepared using ESA

Image 2
Image 3 occurs when flashing directly from ESA,
and the USB cable is disconnected before the flash
procedure is complete. ESA 4.3 allows recovery of
head unit. (See next page for instructions)

If any of the recovery processes fail, refer to FSB 5-11

to complete the Diagnostic Check List and contact the
SmartNav Technical Call Center.

Note: See page 14 for head unit recovery.
