Statement of Purpose
For my Senior Capstone project I will be assessing and addressing the
knowledge gap for the storkbytes fetal monitoring protocols in the
emergency department where I currently work. Currently there is much
confusion with what patients require fetal monitoring, the correct
gestational age for fetal monitoring VS fetal heart tones, and the correct
process for setting up storkbytes on out patients. My hope for this project
is to gain experience working in with staff educators, and experience to
providing formal education. Nursing education has been an area of
interest to me since I was in nursing school. This project will help my
department by providing a set protocol for the ED staff to follow with all
pregnant patients arriving to be seen, and hopefully lower the amount of
missed/unneeded fetal monitoring opportunities.
Goals

1. Research and assess the current knowledge of the ED staff pertaining
to fetal monitoring protocol.
2. Provide and educate staff to new protocol and provide flow sheets to
current fetal monitoring devices which assist staff in both protocol and
storkbytes set up.

Gain experience providing nursing education and establish a positive

relationship with nursing educators to further grow my future
opportunities.

Description of Activities
With the help of my mentor Stacy we are studying the current
collaborative practice guidelines for our hospitals ED storkbytes
procedure. Then with the help of our department manager we are
sending out a survey to all the RNs working in our department asking
them basic questions as to what the know/think the current protocol is.
Once we have identified the areas that need to be addressed we will do
an in-service type teaching during each nursing huddle at shift change
as well as a simulation for the new-grad nurses hired into our
department. I will also be making a storkbytes algorithm which will be
attached to each mobile storkbytes cart to help nurses correctly identify
the correct patients for monitoring. This attachment will also have stepby-step instructions for setting up the storkbytes system.
Evaluation
We will do a post survey of the nurses to make sure we have correctly
addressed the needed knowledge for the storkbytes protocol. Also after
the next quarter we will have data from chart audits which will show if
there has been improvement in the number of patients who needed
monitoring who didnt get it and vise-versa.
