Intermediate Listening, Speaking and Grammar

Listening Logs

You will have to complete four listening logs in Module A


Total weight is 5% of your final listening mark.
Due dates are posted on SLATE Calendar.
Each listening log will be based on a video suggested by the instructor. Please find the
links below.
Elements:
- Your full name, preferred name (if applicable) and class number
- Date
- Assignment title (e.g. Listening Log 1)
- Handwritten notes as you watch the video, take notes. Do not try to write full sentences.
Depending on the length of the video, the notes should be 1-5 pages (3 minutes = 1 page,
10 minutes = 3 pages, 20+ minutes = 5 pages). Do not pause the video; instead, feel free
to watch several times.
- Vocabulary list Select five words from the video that you did know not prior to the
watching. Use the template provided below. To help you remember the new vocabulary
items, try to use them in your summary and response.
- Summary write a paragraph summarizing the video. Do not use the exact sentences
from the video; instead, use your own words. Please follow writing guidelines for a
paragraph. Times New Roman font, 12pt font size, double spaced, standard margins.
- Response - Write a paragraph stating your own reactions to what you listened to. Do not
re-summarize the listening. What surprised you/inspired you/made you angry/did you
find interesting/new? Mention an item from the story and please write what you thought
about it, and relate it to your own life. Please follow writing guidelines for a paragraph.
Times New Roman font, 12pt font size, double spaced, standard margins.
Submission procedure:
- Soft copy of the summary and personal response (in a single document)
submitted to SLATE Turnitin for originality check.
- Once the Turnitin report is complete and you are satisfied with it, submit the
summary, response and vocabulary (in a single document) to SLATE Dropbox.
The soft copy is due at the start of the class.
- Hard copies are due at the start of the class. These should include handwritten
notes, printed summary, response and vocabulary list. Please staple everything
together.
Late or incomplete submissions will be marked with a reduced mark (10% per day). No
submissions accepted after the fifth day.

You will be marked on the following:

Quality of handwritten notes. Do not try to use full sentences. Use margins,
abbreviations, numbering, indenting to organize your notes.
Summary. A well written paragraph containing main ideas only, no details. Clear
introductory sentence, five to six supporting sentences and a concluding sentence.
Response. A well written paragraph containing your reflections. No summarizing.
Vocabulary list. Five items included with the required elements for each. Accuracy of
information.
Deadline. Late submission of the assignment or any part will receive a reduced grade.
Complete submission. All assignment elements to be submitted as outlined above.
