Getting To Know...The Sound of Music

Department of Parks & Recs

Open Gym continues all summer
By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
As the Department of Parks &
Recreation facilitates summer
camps and clinics, it maintains
its Open Gym Program, which
welcomes youth into the Church
Street Recreation Center to play
basketball and commune. This
program is extremely important
to the welfare of children as well
as the township. Providing a safe
and monitored space for young
people promotes good choices and
good behavior.
Recreation Open Gym is a yearlong program that promotes
health and physical activity for
children in grades four to 12.
Every day, Monday through Fri-

day from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.,

children are welcomed in to the
center while adult mentors oversee the activities. During the
summer months, the third floor is
made available as an escape from
the heat.
Chillin at the Rec is a program run by the Moorestown
Youth Outreach Association.
This program runs on Mondays
through Thursdays from 3:30 p.m.
to 5:30 p.m. The Moorestown High
School teens who oversee this
program provide opportunities
for young people to play air hockey, ping-pong, pool or just relax in
the air-conditioned space on the
Third Floor. Young people looking for other friends to play with
need look no further than the

Recreation Center.
Additionally, with the return of
many college-age students, the
Recreation Center provides court
space for young adults. Every
Wednesday and Friday, from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m., Young Adult Open
Gym is open for young people
from high school to age 23. Pickup games and friendly competition are the name of the game at
the Young Adult Open Gym.
The Recreation Open Gym will
run throughout the summer at
the Church Street Recreation
Center at the corner of Church
and Third streets. For more information on Recreation Open
Gym and many others, please

12 THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 1319, 2016

Film shares story of human

trafficking survivor July 13
On Wednesday, July 13, South
Jersey NOW-Alice Paul Chapter,
will be showing "The Girl Next
Door: The Story of a Human Trafficking Survivor.
The program will be preceded
by a discussion of chapter activities. The meeting starts at 7:30
p.m. and is held at the First Baptist Church, 19 W. Main St. in
Moorestown.
Please enter via the side door
closest to municipal parking lot
and Carl's Shoe Store.
The Girl Next Door is an
award-wining film that tells the
true story of all-American
teenager Theresa Flores who survived two years of being a sex
slave in the Michigan suburbs at
the age of 15. Over a two-year period, she was stalked, intimidated, sold and broken in mind and
body. Out of shame, guilt and fear
of what could happen to her
young brothers, Flores stayed
silent.
Twenty years later, she is
speaking out on the reality of
human trafficking in the United
States and how she overcame her
past. On her worst night, being
auctioned off to nearly two dozen

men in a dingy, dirty, inner city

Detroit motel, Flores recalled the
only item that would have
reached out to her was a bar of
soap to clean up. With that in
mind, she created S.O.A.P., Save
Our Adolescents from Prostitution. She is also founder of the advocacy organization TraffickFREE and her efforts were a
major part of the success of AntiTrafficking Bill SB235 passed in
Ohio in 2010.
The Girl Next Door has been
to four film festivals, won two
awards and the director plans to
turn her short film into a full feature. This is the sort of film
everyone needs to see. Most people wont discuss or expose their
children to the reality of sex trafficking in their own backyards
because they feel this is a taboo
subject or their children are too
young to know about predators
that are scouting out schools,
shopping malls and grocery
stores in search of another victim. If children arent exposed to
it by their parents and friends,
many could end up experiencing
the very perversions that were
never revealed to them.

Politicians need to stop pointing fingers and come up with a solution

Dan McDonough Jr.

s of last Thursday night at

11:56 p.m., all non-essential
and non-emergency improvements and repairs to state-owned
roads and NJ Transit that are being
funded through the Transportation
Trust Fund halted.
Money in the TTF, which funds
transportation improvements
throughout the state, is running out,
with transportation officials projecting only enough money in the coffers
to pay for emergency and essential
safety repairs for another month.
Gov. Christie and the state Assembly
tried to keep the fund full and make
sure it is replenished when they proposed, and passed, legislation that
would have raised the states gas tax
by 23 cents per gallon while lowering
the sales tax from 7 percent to 6 percent over two years.
New Jerseys current gas tax is the

second-lowest in the nation, they said.

Raising it wouldnt put too big a burden on our drivers an extra $3.45 per
fill-up if you have an empty 15-gallon
tank and the lowered sales tax could
help off-set that.
But the state Senate, led by
Christies Democratic counterparts,
disagreed, failing to pass the proposals, which Christie said forced his
hand in halting the roadwork.
Were not saying Christies gas tax
proposal was a good one. Frankly,
were not smart enough economists to
know both the short- and long-term effects it could have on the Transporta-

tion Trust Fund, the states overall

budget and also on residents pockets.
What we do know, with 100 percent
certainty, is that enough is enough
with party politics. The back and
forth, the hemming and hawing, the
fighting across aisles has to stop. What
we need are solutions, not finger pointing and accusations.
If the Senate Democrats dont believe Christies proposal is a good one,
then they should propose a viable alternative, not just say the governor is
trying to look good in his potential bid
to be Donald Trumps running mate.
And if Christies proposal really isnt
all that good, the governor and his Republican mates should devise a viable
solution that would be acceptable to
Democrats.
Enough is enough. Start working together, because the residents of New
Jersey are beginning to suffer.

Meeting concerning energy aggregation program July 20

Beginning on Monday, July 11 residents
from Burlington City, Cinnaminson, Florence, Lumberton, Moorestown, Palmyra,
Riverside, Southampton, Woodland and
Wrightstown had the opportunity to ask
any questions they may have regarding the
countys recently implemented Energy Aggregation Program.
Now that we have official approval to
move forward, our next focus is to ensure
that our residents understand what this
program is and how it will save them
money on future utility bills, Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien said. One of the ways
we hope to do that is by holding these outreach meetings.
Residents in participating towns will
receive the lower rate, or may opt out of
the program to either their current utility

rate or to a third-party provider. That way,

this plan not only lowers costs, but also expands consumer choice by providing residents with a third option not currently
available to them.
As the freeholder board remains vigilant against a proposal by New Jersey Natural Gas to increase customer rates by 24
percent, the Energy Aggregation Program
has been another win for a team of freeholders that has seen much success in its
fight to put money back in the pockets of
Burlington County residents.
OBrien encouraged residents to attend
the meetings and advised that they be on
the lookout for additional newsletters as
the programs start date gets closer.
As we begin to implement this cost-saving Energy Aggregation Program, we will

continue to reach out to the participating

municipalities so that the transition will
be as smooth as possible come September.
Our goal is to ensure that our residents
truly feel educated and informed on how
county programs may impact them,
OBrien said.
A meeting in Moorestown will be held
on Wednesday, July 20 at 11 a.m., 4 p.m. and
7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 111 W.
Second St.

Camp Invention comes

to Moorestown July 18
Camp Invention, the nations
premier summer enrichment day
camp program, supported by the
United States Patent and Trademark Office and a product of the
National Inventors Hall of Fame,
is coming to Moorestown Upper
Elementary School the week of
July 18. For students entering
grades one through six, Camp Invention is a weeklong adventure
that will turn the summer from
ordinary
to
extraordinary
through hands-on problem solving, using science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Camp Invention provides an
opportunity for inventive young
minds to exercise their creativity
and use their imagination in
ways they dont normally get to in
the classroom. Program participants do not realize they are
learning and developing new
skills as they build prototypes,
take things apart, explore different types of technology and so
much more.
"The hands-on curriculum
helps to further insert curiosity
into a childs everyday lifestyle.
As the need for skilled STEM pro-

fessionals increases, we believe

we are setting our students up for
success by offering programs like
Camp Invention," Alice Opperman, director of curriculum for
Emerson Public Schools in Emerson, said.
This years Camp Invention
curriculum is called Epic, inspired by some of our nations
most brilliant minds. Epic features hands-on modules such as
CrickoBot, where campers construct and personalize a DIY
solar-powered cricket and a
unique habitat; Epic Park, where
campers work in teams to design
an eco-adventure park; I Can Invent: Maker Studio, where
campers brainstorm product
ideas and build original prototypes using real tools and components found in everyday devices;
and The Lab: Where Pigs Fly,
where children can discover the
science of slime, demolition, electronic sound, giant squid and coding. Learn more about this years
curriculum by visiting campinvention.org/2016-program/.

Since we are playing hockey
we always try to test our limits.
Wed never done long distance, so
we thought we would give it a
try, Briggs said.
Since then, they felt that because the journey was so strenuous they wanted to make it worth
doing each year so the men decided to raise money for charity.
We thought, if we were doing
something crazy like that, why
not do it for something good?
Woyshner said.
They were really pushed by
Briggs aunt Vick Hynes, who got
Briggs into volunteering for

Small businesses have opportunity

Small businesses in Burlington
County may qualify for one of
two loan programs tailored for
small business owners, as long as
those businesses create or retain
jobs in the county. The Burlington County Small Business Loan
Program offers low-interest loans
for small businesses and the
Burlington County Route 130 Revolving Loan Fund Program pro-

vides zero-interest loans to businesses locating or expanding in

the Route 130 Corridor that is targeted for economic growth.
When the freeholders created
these loan programs, the goal was
to help small business owners
gain access to low-cost capital,
which were proud to say has happened, said Freeholder Mary
Ann OBrien. And jobs have

least one job for every $35,000 borrowed. So thats helping the local
economy as well.
The Burlington County Small
Business Loan Program provides
low-interest loans for small businesses located anywhere in
Burlington County. Funds for
this program are received from
the United States Economic Development Agency and available
in one of three forms: fixed asset
loan, working capital or direct
loan. Fixed asset and working
capital loans fund up to $200,000
in the form of gap financing that
requires bank participation. Direct loans fund up to $50,000 and
do not require bank participation.
The Burlington County Route
130 Revolving Loan Fund Program provides zero-interest loans
in the form of gap financing for
businesses locating or expanding
in the Route 130 Corridor. Loans
can be for acquiring real estate
(land and/or buildings), for improvements or renovations to real
property (land and/or buildings),
or for working capital and fixed
assets.
To get the word out about the
countys small business programs, economic development
staff has been meeting with local
business associations in addition
to regular meetings with potential loan applicants and lending
institutions. This program was
presented at the Moorestown
Business Association's monthly
breakfast at the Moorestown

26 THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 1319, 2016

McCartney joins MTPS from Egg Harbor Township

MCCARTNEY
Continued from page 1

Cartney thrived through his time

as class president, captain of the
soccer team and president of the
key club. But the moment he
knew for sure he wanted to become involved in education was
during his practicum at Ursinus
College. He was given a seemingly simple task to teach three
young special needs students the
color green.
It seemed so simple but was
the most frustrating and challenging task. After many hurdles,
attempts and temporary successes and failures, they got it, and I
knew teaching was what I wanted
to do, McCartney said.
Upon receiving his bachelors
degree in English with a minor in
secondary education, the superintendent went on to attain his mas-

ters degree in education administration and leadership from

Rowan University and later his
doctorate in administration from
Seton Hall University.
In my past, I remember teachers who pushed me to do more
than I ever thought I could,
picked me up when I fell short,
and taught me about grit and determination to meet the challenge, McCartney said. As an
educator over the last 25 years, I
have been privileged to see that in
our teachers around the state and
look forward to those same experiences in Moorestown.
After finishing his education,
McCartney first began his career
serving as a substitute teacher in
the Egg Harbor Township School
District. Before long, he was offered long-term employment by
the district as a seventh-grade
language arts teacher, seventhand eighth-grade writing lab
teacher and alternative school
reading teacher.

Next, he began his administrative career as an elementary assistant principal and then principal at the George L. Hess Complex in Hamilton Township in Atlantic County. From there, he became the superintendent in Dennis Township and Downe Township before returning to Egg Harbor Township as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and
instruction and ultimately as the
superintendent.
At the age of 32, I became the
Dennis Township superintendent
and the youngest superintendent
in the state of New Jersey at that
time. I interviewed for the position simply to get some experience and to get a sense of what
additional experiences I needed
to better prepare myself to pursue the superintendence, McCartney said. To my surprise, I
was called back for a second interview and ultimately offered
the position.
Over the years, McCartney has

seen resources become much

more challenging to secure and
the community expectations of
schools,
administrators
and
teachers become more expansive.
This has led to the greatest challenge of his position being balancing all of the needs of the students, faculty, staff and the board
of education, all while navigating
the politics that can arise.
Included in these politics, McCartneys accepting of this role in
Moorestown did not come without some challenges. First, McCartney had to take a pay cut
since, under the current statemandated salary caps, his maximum salary in Moorestown is
$167,500, whereas he made
$177,500 in the larger Egg Harbor
Township district.
I entered the field of education with a desire to make a difference for students and to serve,
not necessarily for the paycheck,
McCartney said.
Second, he had to deal with
some backlash from residents
who began an online petition
aimed at helping Carole Butler,
the interim superintendent, retain the position. However, he understands the feeling some have

regarding a known candidate versus an unknown.

I simply applied for a position,
did my best through the interview process and was offered a
position, McCartney said. I am
appreciative of the work Mrs.
Butler has done to serve this community and will work with all of
our stakeholders to build on that
success.
Above all, after 11 years at Egg
Harbor Township, the new superintendent is looking forward to
all the new opportunities and
challenges to come through his
duration at Moorestown public
schools. He admits it was
Moorestowns reputation of excellence in the classroom and the
communitys strong commitment
to education that initially drew
his attention to the district.
I have learned that with hard
work, a support network and with
a desire to serve, great things can
happen for students, McCartney
said.
He and his wife of 22 years,
Jennifer, have two children
Matthew, a student at George
Mason University, and Lauren, an
incoming freshman at Cedarville
University.

felt like, if I cant be there (as I

have a full-time job now), then I
might as well raise money for
them, Briggs said.
This year the group has grown,
with about 10 skaters and 11 bicyclists participating. They will set
off from Woyshners house for
the approximate four-hour journey on Friday, July 22, with the bicyclists leaving about an hour
after, as they are faster. They take
back roads for the most part, before getting on Route 72 to LBI
and crossing the bridge.
(Im looking forward to) the
end when everyone is kind of
pooped, but excited to hang out,
be done and see all of the money
raised. Everyone coming together
is really cool to see, Woyshner
said.
Woyshner and Briggs said the

ride is difficult, especially with

the hills, but they have the support of their family and friends
and motivation of raising money
for cancer services to keep them
moving. It also helps that the
skaters make stops for drinks and
fruits provided by the Pederson
family and a mid-way stop at Hot
Diggity Dog! in Sewell.
You think about why youre
doing (the skate). Thinking of
those who are suffering, you do
this for them. We fight through
the pain like they fight through
the pain, Woyshner said. That
and with the support of family
and friends, everyone around
you, and the adrenaline, it pushes
you to where you need to be.
It is a huge motivation to have
people donating to something so
near to us. It pushes us to make a
difference and the world a better
place, Briggs said.
Last year, Shore For A Cure
raised a little more than $3,000.
This year, the group is hoping to
raise $4,000. They have a donation

page at gofundme.com/shore
foracure3 where they hope people
will donate. Any amount is appreciated and funds will be donated
50/50 for Camp No Worries and
the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
Any monetary donation is extremely generous of you and we
all thank you so much for giving
to people that are less fortunate
or just need some help, Briggs
said.
Also to help raise money is the
fundraiser on July 18. For $20 a
ticket, those who attend will get
unlimited wings and a Chinese
auction at Dooneys Pub. Shirts
will also be sold during the
fundraiser, with short sleeves at
$12 and long sleeves $15. Dooneys
Pub is located at 1361 Fairview
Blvd. in Delran. Tickets can be
purchased at the door.
To learn more about Shore For
A Cure, visit www.facebook.com/
