HOMEWORK 1

_______ June 2014

1. (10 pts) Find a manufacturing company for multi-stage centrifugal turbocompressors for
chemical or petrochemical industry applications in the US or Europe. State what specific ISO
certifications (quality and/or environment) that this company may have and provide details (do
not choose a company that does not have such certifications). Include copies of the certificates
as attachments if available. State if they also manufacture to a set of standards/codes and discuss
them. Select a specific product and provide details of its properties and performance and a
specification sheet that would be used for ordering that product.

2. (10 pts) Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is manufactured by the dehydrogenation of 2-butanol using
a shell-and-tube reactor. Flue gases are used for heating and pass through the tubes. The flue
gases will contain traces of sulfur dioxide. The reaction products include hydrogen. The reaction
takes place in the shell at a pressure of 3 bar and temperature of 500OC. Select suitable
materials for the tubes and shell. Provide a detailed justification for your recommendations.
3. (10 pts) Water at 600C is pumped from a reservoir to the top of a mountain through a 6 in
Schedule 120 pipe at an average velocity of 12 ft/s. The pipe discharges into the atmosphere at a
level 3000 ft above the level in the reservoir. The pipeline itself is 4,500 ft long. If the overall
efficiency of the pump and the motor driving it is 70% and the cost of electric energy to the
motor is 4 cents per kWh, what is the energy cost for pumping the water?
4. (10 pts) A 1-in Schedule 40 horizontal steel pipe is used to conduct chlorine gas. The gas enters
the pipe through a rounded entrance at a pressure of 6 atm (abs), a temperature of 1200C and a
velocity of 35 m/s.

What is the maximum possible length of the pipe?

What are the pressure and stagnation temperature of the gas at end of the pipe at
maximum length?

Assume adiabatic flow. For chlorine, =1.36 and MW=70.91.

5. (10 pts) Use the Met-Pro pHP series pumps catalog to select and size a pump for a water
delivery system. Water is to be delivered from a storage tank to the top of a process unit with a
net elevation of 10 ft. The process unit is maintained at 15 psig. The connecting line is 200 ft of
3 Schedule 40 pipe with four standard 900 elbows, one globe valve and two gate valves. The
design flow rate is 120 GPM. Report all relevant properties of your proposed pump such as
efficiency, impeller size, BHP, and others.
