Principles of logic and the latter consists of devotional. wor- ship based on faith. But that is not the case with Indian Philosophy. Hinduism has two. important aspects. One of them consists of formalritualistic performance and social discipline: and that aspect leads towards the achievement of worldy prospe- rity and heavenly enjoyments after death. The other aspect of Hindu religion leads towards the attainment of a state of infinite and eternal self- bliss, called Moksa. Indian philosophy also has two main aspects, the theoretical one and the practical one, The former one of theseaspects is the same reasoning based on logic but the latter one is very closely related to the finer aspect of religion leading to Moksa. Logic, in the view of Indian thinkers of the highest orders, is only an aid that helps an aspirant in attaining a clear conception of the exact reality.It, being based on human conceptions and buman conventions, cannot reach that eternally existing and real aspect of the exact reality which is beyond the reach of all speech and all thought. Only the con- ceptional aspect of the exact reality can according to Indian thinkers, be discussed and explained through philosophic treatieses. An aspirant having understood that aspect of the truth, is a ; vised to look for its eternal and transcendent aspect with the help of his own infuitive self- awareness. The practical aspect of Indian Philo- sophy comes to his help'and awakens his intuit- jon through which he hasa direct experience of the exact reality. Some great philosophers of India have supplemented their logical xpenasation) of the truth by its poetic expressions which go very of teninto the deeper levels of its nature, because poetry, arousing the intuition of a person, can take him into some interior secrets of ‘the truth through its power of suggestion. Kashmir valley bas been fortunate ia having many philosopher poets right from the ancient ages. The great Kashmirian thinkers like Utpala- deva and Abinavagupta were good poets as well. The philosophy,-. expressed by them through the medium of poetry is very often more effective and more useful than that discussed by them through the method of logic. That tradition of composing Philosophic poetry continued in the valley for centuries, Lallesvan, one of the greatest saints of Kashmir gave a popular turn to that tradition by composing such poetry in the language of the co- mMmon people, that is the modern Kashmiri lan- guage. Iguages and quotations from whose. works are available in some impotant, works of Abhinava Gupta, That style was later called the style of “Vaks'. The style was fully evolved and made popular by Lallesvari through her sayings. She followed: by a long line of saint poets like’ Niundreshi,. Mirza Kak, Svach Kral. Parmanand, ect. Master ' Koul has been a Kashmiri poet who took up the thread of those saintpvets in the pres¢at age. There are big collections of Vaks™ by ‘Mirza.'Kak which are available im manuscript from ‘in «the Kokarnag area: Very few of: his Vaks' have seen the press. Some. Vaks of Svach: Kral “have been published and some are.available in the ~meniory of singers of anciet type. - Tika Ram Ganjoo, populary: known 2 as Tika Kak, also has been a philosopher . poet whose Vaks are available in manuscript forma at Sri ina Pulwama anid Gulab Bagh (Gandexbal). He lived at Madan Yar, Habakadal ( the area.of the ‘present Scootar Stand). According ‘to his desc lived upto’ 1888 A: D. His chief dis Bhona Kak of Pinglin, Pulwama, Tehsil’ Anan- tnag, (1818.A..D. t0'1913°A: D:): He, having been impressed by the saintly gualities of Tika ‘Kak, gave up. his: service, became one of disciples, observed . ‘lifeslong celibacy and . passed; the major portion. (3) of his life in the company of preceptor.He com pi- led the Vaks of Tika Kak and composed his own Vaksas well. His disciple, Thakur Joo Saproo,(1878 A. D. to 1953 A. D.) was a house- holder living at Gulab Bag (Ganderbal). He also is said to have composed abouta 100 Vaks, All these Vaks are compiled in a big collection which was in the possession of Thakur Joo Saproo. " Brahmacahari Rughu Nath Ji is a disciple of Shri Thakur Joo from whom he got the collec- tion of those Vaks written in Persian characters, He had an intense desire to get the Vaks published. Therefore he got them transcribed into Devana- gari characters. He further felt that the meanings of the Vaks cannot be under stood by people, be- cause many secrets of the theory and the practice of the Saive philosophy of Kashmir have been mystically expressed through them. It is very di-. fficult to understand most of them without the help of the knowledge of Kashmir Saivism. Therefore Shri Raghunath Ji approached me in 1972 and urged me to translate the collection of the Vaks into Hindi. - One portion of the collection was transla- ted by me in 1972. A part. of collection was published by the Sharika Bhagwati Trust, Sri. nagar in 1974.Shri Raghunath Ji was not satisfied (4) MN ge with the publistiag business of the Trust. I also did not find the performance ‘to be satisfactory. The Brahmachari did not lose heart.He approackied people to get financial assistance to ‘his selfless efforts aimed at that sacred cause of service ‘to the culture of Kashmir and suiccesded- in colllec- ‘ ting money to start the printing OF the remaining part of the translated portion of the collec a of the Vaks of Tika Kak. The printing is ‘going on at some good press at Jammu: In the mean time [ started]to translate. ‘the remaining portion of the collection and comple- ted that work in September .1976. This portion also is going to be printed at Jammu ‘and is ex- pected to come out in the market as-eatly “as “possible. This second portion of the collection -is more philosophic in character and deals with " some very esoteric principal of the. practice of Saiva Yoga. In the whole collection of the Vaks there are some sayings at. several places which are still difficult to understand. | have, however, - tried to translate them as far correctly as I could. But their meanings are still full of doubt to me - and require further thinking and pondering by scholars. Incorrect copying and transcribing can be the cause of doubt at some places. Therfore the text also requires’ further correction after sufficient pondering. Their Poetry does not reveal any scholarship, They had reali- zed the principles of sastras by means of direct experience of the truth attained through ‘the prac- tice of Sambhava-Yoga. They must have had dis- Cources with Scholars and saints of different or- ders, -and must have picked up philosphic termi- nology from those discourses Influence of Tantric Kaulism and Sufism also is evident at a few pla- ces. This shows that they must have had contacts with many types of saints and scholars. All these facts prove that Tika Kak was a Philosopher of high merit and Bhona Kak was his . Worthy disciple, This Collection of their Vaks can be taken as a. poetic work on monistic Shaivism written in Kashmiri language and is, therfore a valuable contribution to the culture of Kashmir, The Vakas have already been Scruitnized by the Shiv Acharya Swami Lachman Joo, .
